The problem with your defense of the bible in terms of slavery is a lack of historical context. The first pope/bishop, Eusebius compiled the bible in the 360's, by his own admission he chose to compile certain texts that would encourage passive slaves. Knowledge is the only true freedom.

I actually have no problem with education vouchers, I disagree often with other liberals, This does not mean that i back the devil just to spite them. I think all people should be able to choose between high quality secular education or use vouchers to choose 'magic-man' education. Tax cuts do encourage overseas investment- in that case they work, if the tax surplus of a country is being reasonably put to use to fund social services and there is still a surplus left, then a tax cut should be given, but not as a priority to the highest bracket before the others, in fact, it should be the opposite. I think teachers should earn a professional wage, but i think the crisis in public education comes from a deterioration in school conditions, the classes are too big, there is no recourse for teachers in discipline, and there are wider social issues that are brought in that serve to make a teachers job very hard.

Tax cuts do encourage overseas investment- in that case they work, if the tax surplus of a country is being reasonably put to use to fund social services and there is still a surplus left, then a tax cut should be given, but not as a priority to the highest bracket before the others, in fact, it should be the opposite. But that's not the case.

blamey, you will have to go off and work on making better sense. Whilst it's sad to see someone denied beneficial elective surgery, what system other than universal healthcare would give a damn about the child?

Wayward - you can't even spell my user name and I am supposed to buy into your superiority? Please enlighten me. Which government programs are effectively/ efficiently run? Universal Healthcare is for the healthy ONLY. Only 20 cents of every Medicare dollar in taxes goes to healthcare for the patient and Medicare covers virtually nothing. And you think the government - the ones that are bankrupting social security - are gonna get it right THIS time around? Grow up.

Blamy, i can spell your name right? Are you happy now? You know that a cochlear implant would be seen as elective surgery in any country in the world. Universal Healthcare in all countries deny covering certain elective procedures. It's sad but better than the alternative. Use a fact to refute me for a change.

The fact is that you propose to bankrupt a country because it "feels good" to provide everyone with blanket healthcare coverage; yet a cochlear implant is optional? I hardly think so. Canadians routinely come to the U.S. for healthcare that they would have to wait months for - including CT scans (7 month wait!), emergency appendectomies, and even multiple births because there aren't enough PICU's. I have used facts. When will you?

Funny how you decided that making a deaf child hear is "optional surgery" when defending universal healthcare. How pathetic is that. Where I live, my community would get together to raise funds to pay for that "optional" surgery . . . if they could afford it after all those freaking taxes.

Not everybody has a community behind them. And yes, as i spent many years as a volunteer in both deaf and blind schools i know that procedures that could restore vision or hearing are often deemed as elective by bureaucracies. No system is perfect, but some are much better than others.
