no need to argue about the vintage, it was damned good music, and yes it must have been the right blend of opium and coke that produced the best music ever!
always had a sound of there own, loved em sence i was a pre teen, remember my sis boyfriend playing the candy o lp,the first time i heard em, followed em every sence, new lp is good too
I am 28. Always listened to the Cars, in part because of my parents. But my parents never knew how much they rocked. One of my fave songs on Candy-O. That album is filled with greats
If I remember correctly, this was used as a promotional video for their debut album, The Cars. Chock full of hits, btw!!! Great band. Too bad about Benjamin Orr...
Candy O is one of my favorite albums and this is my fave from that album. I still love this tune and think the Cars were just a wee bit ahead of their time.
Elliot Easton is not underrated...just not discussed a great deal because his band was not totally focused on the guitar.Elliot is well known to be a VERY good player.
Gawd, Ocasek was a strangely sexy guy-really magnetic. Would like to have been his or Ben's 'dangerous type'. And Ben is mind blowingly beautiful through out but never as gorgeous as in those last few seconds. OMG, my heart skips beats.............I miss you Ben.
Just to make things clear people, The Cars released this as a dedication to bang a gong (T. Rex). I personally like this better. It's got a awesome solo!
They still sound new! New music now sounds old and crappy. What happened to New Wave? I can't listen to most newer popular bands now. People like Nickelback, what the hell?
@lilstrummerboy77 Totally agree. His leads are all over their music, and they're all blazing. There were two frontmen in front of him. Still, can't feel too sorry for him, he was in the Cars for christs sake.
At their concert at Midway Stadium in 1981. It was totally rockin' and I was in my late teens. Memories memories, who we were with, what we were doing. I remember they opened for the Marshall Tucker band and they totally killed them!
I remember when the Cars broke big...I was in the 6th grade and I begged my dad to buy the record. My mom complained the lyrics were nothing but sexual innuendo MOM: see ROCK AND ROLL). I got the lyrics a few years later but their riffs really got my attention as a 6th grade kid in a Catholic grade school.
This song should have Benjamin Orr on lead vocals. It'd be a BIG, sexy improvement and probably a much bigger hit. Repeating "C'mon and hold me tight" would have all the ladies jumping on stage with Orr singing it!
Amazing song, wonderfully written. Few songs have a build up which leads to a climatic moment like this one. It must have been wonderful to be in your 20s and to have such rich material to play live.
The outro to this song is every bit as fascinating as that of I Want You (She's so Heavy) by the Beatles in 1970. I don't notice the gradual increase in intensity, so much as I'm shocked back to reality when it's over.
Thats what always captivated me about this song from when I first heard it, and I first saw this video at a stereo show in the ealry 80's. Blasted it continuously on my cassette boombox.
I love this song, and great video.. BUT WHAT THE HELL IS FILMIING EVERYBODY ELSE BUT ELLIOT DURING HIS SOLO???? And David Robinson is hardly present as well.
This song, the last on Candy-O, is comparable to All Mixed Up, the last song on their 1st album in that it has that catchy haunting vibe to it that leaves you thinking and wanting to play the whole album over again. All their albums were great but they did not put one foot wrong on the first 2 albums. I'm glad they've reunited, I think Ben would be happy, but there's no way you can replace the late great Ben Orr and they've wisely decided not to. Hard to believe it's been 10 years he's been gone
@cudaj2 I could not have said this any better! The long outro to this song is incredible. They way the outro gets layered and louder and mystical all at the same time before slowly fading away is incredible.
@johnisallin Agreed. It's a magnificent progression, shown in pieces and kept out of the way during the sparse and slowly developing main body of the song. Then as if a system is sliding out of control, the change accelerates, and the pieces come together. By the fade out, they are introducing new variations in each bar, and with the mounting layers as you point out, they simultaneously fill the sonic and thematic space. The momentum at the end has carried to 2011 so far...
18 ppl wouldn't know a clue if it introduced itself, bit them on the ass, took their girlfriend, pillaged their fridge, and took a dump on dining room table.
The first two Cars albums were full of magic. I remember well buying them on vinyl and being blow away from the very first listening session. Sadly, the vibe didn't last. I guess it was the lure of the all mighty dollar. Funny the way the tracks from those same two albums generate a lot of viewing and discussion today. Very good to see the magic wasn't lost with time and to witness the way the new generation is embracing the material released more than 30 years ago.
My girlfriend "Kim" turned me onto The Cars in 1980. She went to see them live at Carrier Dome in Syracuse that year and said it was awesome! She was my first love and a little hottie. Now every time I hear any song from their first 2 albums I think of her. They are timeless...unlike me!
@TheFreeman1963 The hair on the back of my neck stands out when I hear the keyboards at the end...haunting, I close my eyes and it's 1982, I'm driving down main street at 1am with my friends passing the lights and people on the street, looking for gals. The Cars were amazing.
@dudefromtherock I echo what you say....dude. I feel the same way... Love the say. Glad we can watch these vids from years past and still remember where we were, who we were with and what wer were doing. Music is special in that way...
@dudefromtherock the music we loved then makes todays crap sewer water for sure. I would gladly rewind the clock 30 years for all of us......only if I could......
I agree the Cars were amazing.....I used this audio for one of my cat videos and You Tube took it off - Dangerous Cats- no longer viewable. Then Talking Heads and my video is silent.
Anyway, the Cars are one of the best bands EVER!.
@dudefromtherock I remember getting hold of a bottle of Jim Beam when I was 16, then getting stuck in the mud in my friend's VW Squareback. It didn't seem so bad when you had The Cars in the 8-Track!
The cars was one of those bands that could capture a basic melody that was mesmerizing and build around it which it seems to me is what tends to sell, it’s really excellent rock music.
didnt know ben died. i have been a cars fan my whole life but can barely listen any more cuz i have a rare condition called hyperacusis, and extreme trigeminal nueralgia, one of the most painful conditions known to man, well documen ted as that. im hoping to hold on till april and have a surgery thats all or nothing for my pain and so i can listen to the cars again. i love them and am very familiar with their whole 5 albums:) dangerous type is a perfect mix of their talents!
it's so painful when they cut away from Easton while he is doing his solo. His solos are always so good, and he was such a star. In fact, although I love Rick, Easton... influenced me so much as far as style and cool goes. Easton is so underrated.
There was nothing that could ever beat just hanging out watching MTV in the 80s. That changed us all. The younger in ways they don't understand, in the older, ways that make them sad.
This song sums up the cars for me.I was in my camaro with a girl that i thought i could never be with.High school love B.S. I guess.......Our daughters aged 16 and 14 like rap go figure.lololo.
Almost sounds like Benjamin Orr on the album version...I really just don't get how this band didn't make it to the HOF.. They played a huge roll in New Wave, Rock and even Pop to shape into modern music and classic favorited tunes. Too bad theres not a single band like them anymore...but what makes up for that is of course..the cars reunion!! I hope there new album won't be too popish and modern music of today like. If it is then i'll understand why there not the same without the "full lineup".
nice ty!

There was nothing that could ever beat just hanging out watching MTV in the 80s. That changed us all. The younger in ways they don't understand, in the older, ways that make them sad.
