This cut comes from an album called "SuperBlues" with Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. It's a classic live studio album from the late '60's. "I'm a Man" has been covered by many bluesmen. I also love the Yardbirds studio cut and many of their live versions.
But this version in so special because Bo and Muddy were friendly rivals and you can get a sense that they are trying to outdo each other.
"you ain't no rollin' stone, I'm a natural born lover!"
@1blastman Where do you get they were friendly rivals??? They were trying to sell RECORDS and PERSONAL APPEARANCES. The Yardbirds and Chicago songs are completely different songs. THEMOJOMAN*COM I was ridin' them years on the radio with them.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 The Chicago song is definitely different, but the Yardbirds is a cover of the Diddley\Waters and any bluesman who covered it. Listen to both. Both recorded for Chess records and while they had their large egos and differences, they were awesome at blues shows together. My dad took me to a Muddy Waters\Bo Diddley show back in the late 1950's and I've been hooked on blues ever since.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 The original song was "Hoochie Coochie Man," written for Muddy by Willie Dixon. Later on, Bo Diddley reworked it, calling it "I'm a Man," then Muddy re-recorded it again, calling it "Mannish Boy."
@JBerg4723 Hoochie Coochie Man and I'm a Man are two different songs. You better read the credit under the title of Mannsh Boy and I'm a Man,,,,sez ELIAS McDANIELS. Willie Dixon had nothing to do with I'm a Man. he may have been there when it was recorded as he was working at CHESS at the time. I'm a Man predates Mannish Boy.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Bo Diddley's real name was Elias Bates, but he used the pen name of "Elias McDaniel" when it came to song writing credits. "Hoochie Coochie Man" was released by Chess Records in early 1954, and "I'm a Man" was released by Checker Records (a Chess subsidiary) in early 1955.
I believe that music videos, MTV, ruined the music industry. They looked for hot women and guys with attitude regardless of any musical talent what so ever. "Have you seen this video? Have you seen that video?" Was the music any good. Probably at first. Then it became all about promotion and not the music. The music industry whines about declining sales. Well put out some quality produt and the sales will increase.
@Zzeak You got that right. Looks didn't mean shi* years ago,,the music did. I remember when Ronnie Milsap came out on a mostly Black label (SCEPTER) They kept it quiet,,he sounded Black. Records were at one time like radio,,THEATRE OF THE MIND. You created your own images in your mind. MTV (C)RAP both ruined ROCK&ROLL
@1531thejohnnyboy now that is some funny and true ish. Any body seen the movie cadillac records. love that movie. all about chess records and the artist that made it including muddy, little walter, chuck berry bo diddley etta james
back in '72-'73 or so, Bo did a fantastic version for the concert moviie 'Let The Good Times Roll'. never forgot it and i've been watching for a video clip ever since.
@mattukenobaka Wanta hear BO at his best,,CLICK ON I'm Bad by Bo Diddley one of his greatest. OR WILLIE & LILLIE by BO. Willie & Lillie used to live on a hill,,wasn't for R&R,,they'd be there still.
I love The Yardbirds version of this one... but hell you can still listen to the blues or blues rock bands versions of these songs and still be in love with both. Just like Back Door Man by Howlin' and Doors or You Shook Me Sang by Muddy or Robert Plant.
muddy, john lee,bo,albert,b.b.chuck,lil richard, hyowling wolf, johnny otisthey all gave to make rock eternal in all its forms from elvis to immortal...metal forever!

Now I know I'm gonna get a lot of flack for this, but Chicago did a hell of a good job covering this song, too.

Blues at it's best!
1blastman 1 year ago 2
@1blastman Where do you get they were friendly rivals??? They were trying to sell RECORDS and PERSONAL APPEARANCES. The Yardbirds and Chicago songs are completely different songs. THEMOJOMAN*COM I was ridin' them years on the radio with them.
THEMOJOMANsince1959 10 months ago
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 The Chicago song is definitely different, but the Yardbirds is a cover of the Diddley\Waters and any bluesman who covered it. Listen to both. Both recorded for Chess records and while they had their large egos and differences, they were awesome at blues shows together. My dad took me to a Muddy Waters\Bo Diddley show back in the late 1950's and I've been hooked on blues ever since.
RIP - Bo, Muddy and Walter

This made my dick jump out im a fan its the song that influenced that famous Mannish Boy song
fredsassy5 1 year ago
@fredsassy5 Mannish Boy I'm a Man same song Muddy worded it a little different.
THEMOJOMANsince1959 10 months ago
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 The original song was "Hoochie Coochie Man," written for Muddy by Willie Dixon. Later on, Bo Diddley reworked it, calling it "I'm a Man," then Muddy re-recorded it again, calling it "Mannish Boy."
JBerg4723 10 months ago
@JBerg4723 Hoochie Coochie Man and I'm a Man are two different songs. You better read the credit under the title of Mannsh Boy and I'm a Man,,,,sez ELIAS McDANIELS. Willie Dixon had nothing to do with I'm a Man. he may have been there when it was recorded as he was working at CHESS at the time. I'm a Man predates Mannish Boy.
THEMOJOMANsince1959 10 months ago

Zzeak 1 year ago 9
@Zzeak You got that right. Looks didn't mean shi* years ago,,the music did. I remember when Ronnie Milsap came out on a mostly Black label (SCEPTER) They kept it quiet,,he sounded Black. Records were at one time like radio,,THEATRE OF THE MIND. You created your own images in your mind. MTV (C)RAP both ruined ROCK&ROLL

I love The Yardbirds version of this one... but hell you can still listen to the blues or blues rock bands versions of these songs and still be in love with both. Just like Back Door Man by Howlin' and Doors or You Shook Me Sang by Muddy or Robert Plant.
