They find 5 distinct catchy tones and beat those tones to death and drive them into the ground.
In my opinion Meshuggah sucks, like really bad, and this thing that branched off of them called djent is really good. I know it doesn't make sense, but I just really thing that Meshuggah was a horrible band, especially the song "BLEED".

Meshuggah is Meshuggah, not djent, sound wise Meshuggah are Prgressive Groove Metal in my little invalid opinion, Daddy Djent! Djent has a generally over compressed and heavily gated Guitar sound, Djent is Cloudkicker, RXYZYXR, Animals as Leaders, and then the guys with all the vocals, Periphery, TesseracT and Vildhjarta. These guys obviously listened to a lot of meshuggah; But generic Djent copies these bands, not Meshuggah.
If these bands are Meshuggah clones, they're poor ones at that. There's nothing polyrhythmic about most the material that these bands put out. Nothing grooving against the 4/4. It's like they took "deathcore" songs and took all the pauses between the breakdowns out of them. Especially that Volumes band. Awful.
I honestly don't know what to make of this. It's not really the kind of sound that I particularly like, yet it peaks my interest. Not sure about it but I think it's worth getting. Just for tryouts.
