Brilliant - thank you for this fantastic track from the 1950 Voice of the Xtabay LP - this is such wonderful music, vocally, instrumentally, it is almost sacred. So ahead of her time - we will never forget Yma Sumac. DAVEDJ
Her song "Chunco" is probably the only one she recorded that displays her full range at the time. I find it hard to believe that she could reach C#7 without going into her head/whistle register. She just made it sound much more natural than the screeching/wailing we hear today from Carey etc. I think her ability to sing in a double voice is more remarkable than the fact that she had a 4 octave range(it seems as time passes admirers have added an octave to it) Always divine to listen to...RIP
Once a teacher of mine talked about her, then one day I came across one of her records and bought it. I was simply amazed by her vocal abilities, she's one of a kind.
@europazy Your country deserves Yma Sumac all the honours she get through his art? Peruvians stupid that ignores Yma Sumac and prefer shit music such Tommy Portugal and many other dumbasses ..ITs not a pride to be a peruvian..
@seekingnewhorizons its very silly idea, she loves it! Judging from not good if you have not lived in that time in Peru especially in Ichocan Cajarmarca .. and please stop Judging from her said it was a privilege to Peruvian please Respect it
Yma Sumac WOW!! 1 helluva woman, how many octaves did she have? I believe in the range of 5+ Octaves. No-one past, present or future will have the voice of a Yma Sumac.. her voice was a true freak of nature 1 of a kind , but what a voice.AMAZING
Yes you are correct she could reach 5 octaves, but one of the main differences in Yma's octaves and other singers who claim to reach 5 octaves is that Yma did this in her natural voice, without having to resort to "falsetto" to reach the high notes like other singers do, for example mariah carey. This is why Yma's high notes don't sound like a whistle or air escaping from a ballon that has been pinched tight as mariah carey does or that horrible russian singer I forget her name.
Yma Sumac, indeed had the greatest natural voice ever and there will never be another like her. She passed away this November 1st 2008 at 86yrs of age from cancer. The Russian singer you speak of with the unusually high voice is not Russian but German and her name is Erma Seck.
thanks for the response. I wasnt actually refering to Erma Sack, I love Erma she is fantastic. I said Russian I meant to say Brazilian, I was refering to Georgia Brown. Brown is a good example of what someone sounds like in "whistle" register because she cannot use her natural range to reach it. She's also a good example of how just being able to reach whistle register does not mean a person can sing.
In Bavaria (South Germany), Tyrol and in German-Austrian Alps in general, there are many singers especially among the country folk who are singing the so-called yodeling and they have similar vacal abilities.
@Aetion "Similar vocal abilities"? Hope you're joking! Yma Sumac was a unique natural phenomenon, handling easily at her peak five octaves, when every good opera singer is happy to reach three. And , besides, she used her modal voice and NOT a falsetto like in yodeling.
In Bavaria (South Germany), Tyrol and in German-Austrian Alps in general, there are many singers especially among the country folk who are singing the so-called yodeling and they have similar vacal abilities.

Well is true the people from mountain areas have special vocal abilities
But Yma Sumac is the only ONE in this word with this voice
and that what experts say.
So no german or whatever people can have this voice.
I'm very proud to be peruvian as Yma, also was born in the mountains :)

As far as I know, Eva Braun was Hitler's girlfriend. I don't think Erna Sack, the singer, ever knew Hitler.
