That's Vinnie on drums. . Lately Herbie has been playing a medley by combining Cantolope Island and Watermelon. Go back to the source (I see some B&W vids here) and you will understand.
@dantheguitarman88 My point exactly. As a drummer, I 'm aware of Coliuata's reputation - and was disappointed when I heard these guys playing a tune I've played since elementary school in the 70s. When you play Soulful music, and the person listening doesn't feel it, then something is missing. And in this case, the Soul is missing. Check out the Watermelon clip w/Terri Carrington on drums w/Roy Hargrove, you can feel their Soul(s).
@dantheguitarman88 just so you know ive done an enormous amount of research on Vinnie he doesnt think he's the coolest shit on earth believe me. He is up for any gig and is always happy because he is always playing.
@monkeygames18 In my opinion i think that vinnie is being a little to complicated for the song. I think he should just lay a groovy and simple beat almost the whole song. But thats just me
really?? i like vinnie better than harvy mason, who if im correct is the man who originally played drums on this track.. i mean yes, ol Herbs has played with some incredible drummers (my fav being Jack Dejonette) but that doesn't mean vinnie cant hang.. but you are intitiled to your opinion soooooo...
Yeah I get that. I don't know I've worked for about 9 years to get away from letting rock-style drumming bleed in to other styles like funk and jazz, and I feel as if Vinnie doesn't discern like that.
This is why people love herbie! Definitely brought that funky sync into the the jazz picture. I saw this group together, and was not impressed at all with the guitarist
that guitarist is one of the best man! you should really listen what the guy does with his space, how he reacts on herbie's ideas, how he is one the background without taking the space of others.
I saw them in Rotterdam btw, I was next to the camera guy, what a night. Saw Abdullah Ibrahim after this one, perfect end of the day.
I was there & saw the concert and even put the "solo Herbie Hancock vs Chris Potter" on YouTube too, but I never noticed that Herbie and Chris where checking there watches & timing the lenghth of there solo, probibly they had been argumenting about it.

This song requires that the musicians have Soul. Something is obviously missing.
fnkdrmmr 1 year ago
@fnkdrmmr ummmmm... please correct me if Im wrong... but are you implying that herbie hancock doesnt have soul...? cuz that would be RIDICULOUS.
dantheguitarman88 1 year ago
@dantheguitarman88 NO! Just those hired musicians are lacking SOUL. LIsten to them wrecking "Watermelon Man". They sound like a horrible garage band.

I think it's the recording quality that makes the drums seem bad.

yeah a lot of cameras pick up drums badly , so they can sound way to over powering.
