they took out the ady gil, and later in the campaign japanese also purposely rammed the bob barker ship. STILL sea shepherds had the most success campaign, completely shutting the whalers down. The Japanese have a formal objection to the whale sanctuary with respect to Minke. That is what the fight is over. All the "extinction" arguments are nothing more than bullshit propaganda.
The report is out and yes the Shonan Maru 2 did primarily cause the collision, however the report also put blame on the Ady Gil for not evading sooner. Violence like this will only escalate until the Japanese finally show respect of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

Maritime New Zealand has performed an investigation of the collision which occurred in the Southern Ocean between the Ady Gil trimaran and the Shonan Maru 2 security vessel of the Institute of Cetacean Research.
The report will show the fault of the collision to be due to the last minute course change performed by the Shonan Maru 2 shortly before the collision occurred. As the Ady Gil had been sitting idle in the water for several minutes prior to the collision...
@venturafor2012 I have confirmed this to be true--the conclusion of the MNZ report states that the Shonan Maru #2 is to blame for the collision. The preliminary report has been sent to the involved parties (SSCS and ICR) for them to make comments and send back to MNZ. Once their comments are received, they will be added to the final report and it will be made public.
I hope the NZ govt will follow up on this by demanding restitution from the Japanese. The SM capt almost killed 6 people.....

That it sayed afloat at least two days suggests it could have been salvaged by securing it to the Bob Barker using it's crane that raises and lowers their speed boats. If they couldn't get up on ship they sure as hell could have rigged lines to get the nose out of the water and seal of the hole.

The report has been released to the public yet, but it soon will be. As with most boat collisions, some blame was assigned to the Ady Gil, but the vast majority went to the Shonan Maru. Once the report is made public, criminal charges against the SM capt and a civil suit against Kyodo Senpaku will follow....

I would have hard time accepting a japanese govt report that found fault with the Ady Gil for the simple fact that the japanese govt is heavily involved with the japanese whaling industry and their report would almost certainly be biased. The NZ govt on the other hand has no connection to the SSCS or the Ady Gil and so they're objective/unbiased.

SS haters love to talk about the tragic accident with Earthrace and the Guatemalan fishing boat. But the facts are that the Guatemalan fishing boat was anchored, at night, with no lights on at all and their engines off. ANY vessel in the area would have hit the boat if on a similar course.
The case was investigated by the Guatemalan courts and Pete Bethune was cleared of any wrongdoing.

They waited till they were close enough and at the last second they turned hard to port directly at the A/G. The video from the Bob Barker proves it. @Puff29646 Supposedly the SM capt has admitted that the japanese whale poachers knew that the AG was low on fuel and they saw this is "their best chance" to take out the AG which was seriously hindering whale poachers activities. The plan was to have all 3 of the harpoon boats closely pass the AG which was dead in the water. Then, when the 3rd boat passed, at the last second they would turn and ram the AG damaging it to the point that it was not seaworthy. They could have easily killed 6 people.

And the Ady Gil was not sunk. It was scuttled because they didn't want to drag it back to a port for repairs because they wanted to keep filming their TV show--FOR MONEY.
The film was edited to make it look like the ship was steering into the Ady Gil. However the AG had no business being in it's path in the first place. Larger ships ALWAYS have the right of way.

The report is out and yes the Shonan Maru 2 did primarily cause the collision, however the report also put blame on the Ady Gil for not evading sooner. Violence like this will only escalate until the Japanese finally show respect of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Extremists on both sides will never agree, but pretty much everyone agrees you do not kill threatened and endangered species in a Whale Sanctuary. That's just wrong and everyone knows it.

Maritime New Zealand has performed an investigation of the collision which occurred in the Southern Ocean between the Ady Gil trimaran and the Shonan Maru 2 security vessel of the Institute of Cetacean Research.
The report will show the fault of the collision to be due to the last minute course change performed by the Shonan Maru 2 shortly before the collision occurred. As the Ady Gil had been sitting idle in the water for several minutes prior to the collision...

@venturafor2012 I have confirmed this to be true--the conclusion of the MNZ report states that the Shonan Maru #2 is to blame for the collision. The preliminary report has been sent to the involved parties (SSCS and ICR) for them to make comments and send back to MNZ. Once their comments are received, they will be added to the final report and it will be made public.
I hope the NZ govt will follow up on this by demanding restitution from the Japanese. The SM capt almost killed 6 people.....

Claming as you do at the end of this video that the Ady Gil "was a total loss" is a gain, pure bullshit. It sustained damage yes, limited to the front 8 feet. Hello... the Ady Gil is 78 feet long. That it sayed afloat at least two days suggests it could have been salvaged by securing it to the Bob Barker using it's crane that raises and lowers their speed boats. If they couldn't get up on ship they sure as hell could have rigged lines to get the nose out of the water and seal of the hole.

JRBeaman You really ought to do a little research before you post........A) Bethune can't be fired he was a volunteer, B) he was asked to leave the SS as part of their legal strategy to get the japanese to release him thinking that he wouldn't be back next year to harass the japs--and it worked. C) Bethune wasn't at the helm at the time of the collision D) The collision was caused by the SM that ignored intl maritime law and failed to yield to the stand on vessel....

@USDAChuckSteak No Chucky, not just my opinion, lol. The MNZ investigation has been finished and the fault is with the Shonan Maru. The report has been released to the public yet, but it soon will be. As with most boat collisions, some blame was assigned to the Ady Gil, but the vast majority went to the Shonan Maru. Once the report is made public, criminal charges against the SM capt and a civil suit against Kyodo Senpaku will follow....

As a side note, if Japan released their own report that placed the largest portion of the blame on the AG would you accept that? I already know the answer, but I have to ask.
As for the lawsuit...I'll be inclined to believe that once I see this report you seem to know all about, yet don't have any proof of.

I would have hard time accepting a japanese govt report that found fault with the Ady Gil for the simple fact that the japanese govt is heavily involved with the japanese whaling industry and their report would almost certainly be biased. The NZ govt on the other hand has no connection to the SSCS or the Ady Gil and so they're objective/unbiased.

@USDAChuckSteak Don't put words in my mouth chuckie! I think if the japanese wanted to whale commercially in their own coastal waters, most people wouldn't have too big a problem with that.
I am personally opposed to all forms of whaling as it is a very cruel and barbaric practice. It is next to impossible to kill a whale quickly, and most of the killed whales take anywhere for 20 mins to 2 hours to die--a slow, agonizing death, drowning in their own blood and being shot multiple times.....

SS haters love to talk about the tragic accident with Earthrace and the Guatemalan fishing boat. But the facts are that the Guatemalan fishing boat was anchored, at night, with no lights on at all and their engines off. ANY vessel in the area would have hit the boat if on a similar course.
The case was investigated by the Guatemalan courts and Pete Bethune was cleared of any wrongdoing.

I do have friends who are Japanese, and they are very, very nice people. They don't see "jap" as derogatory at all, though they do not like "Nip" which I never use. Given that we're limited in how many characters we have with each post, many times I use "jap" to save space. Not racist at all, but that's a common red herring.....

When this idiot was trying to set a world speed record just off the coast of Guatemala they ran their speedboat over the top of a fibreglass skiff full of Guatemalen fishermen. IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT THE ADY GIL'S FAULT. THE SHONAN MARU PURPOSEFULLY(OBVIOUSLY) TURNED STRAIGHT INTO THE AG. THE AG HAD PRACTICALLY NO FUEL LEFT, AND COULDN'T HAVE TURNED OUT OF THE WAY. SERIOUSLY? WOULD AN 18TON TINY, FRAGILE SHIP INTENTIONALLY TRY TO RAM A SHIP 10X BIGGER THAN THEM? THE AG HAD NO CONTROL OVER THEIR SHIP, THEREFORE IT IS THE SM2'S RESPONSIBILITY TO STAY CLEAR OF THE AG. until that ramming it self, they thought that the Shonan Maru #2 was going to go pass the Ady Gil extremely close... there was nothing that Capt. Bethune could do...

The AG caused the collision that would have never happened had they maintained course & speed (sitting still) as required by maritime law.

They waited till they were close enough and at the last second they turned hard to port directly at the A/G. The video from the Bob Barker proves it. The SM#2 port side is NOT visible from the B/B until it turns hard to starboard directly at the A/G. This fact is SELF EVIDENT!!!

@Puff29646 Supposedly the SM capt has admitted that the japanese whale poachers knew that the AG was low on fuel and they saw this is "their best chance" to take out the AG which was seriously hindering whale poachers activities. The plan was to have all 3 of the harpoon boats closely pass the AG which was dead in the water. Then, when the 3rd boat passed, at the last second they would turn and ram the AG damaging it to the point that it was not seaworthy. They could have easily killed 6 people.
