@WiimonkeyN, the PS3 actually is capable of emulating the PS2 with software alone. Consider that a PC rig with equivalent hardware power is capable of emulating PS2 games, albeit with some lag and graphical glitches. Most would assume this means the PS3 would be no better. But you also have to consider that PS2 emulators on PC are mostly hackjobs, and are imperfect. Also consider that the PS3 is far different from that of a PC in terms of architecture, so it's likely more compatible.

Now with these things in mind, you have to venture a guess that Sony, obviously with more intimate knowledge of both the PS2 and PS3 architectures, would be able to pull of a software-based PS2 emulator no problem.

You also have to consider Sony has a patent (I think it was a patent) filed for Cell-based PS2 emulation.

There's been a rumour of Sony adding the PS2 BC as a software emulation by an upcoming firmware update allowing PS2 -games to run without some of the hardware parts that were in the prev. models that made it possible on them, the update would be released AFTER the PS2 stops selling.

Now, this is just a rumor, but I sure hope it happens. After all, the rumour of the 6 MONTH 50 million dollars paid exclusivity deal MS made with R-Star for GTA4DLCS was true as March 30th is for PS3 & PC

This cannot happen because the PS3 does not have the processing power to *software emulate* ps2 games. It can do it for ps1 games, and it can emulate ps2 games with the help of some chips, but it cannot rely on just software emulation for ps2 games.
