Javelins go vertical shot when the enemy is laser designated by SOFLAMs, CITVs or the laser painters from attack/scout helos. They do a top down attack and do extra damage. Its how they are locking onto helicopter and jets also, you can normally only lock onto ground vehicles with javelins but if it is laser designated you can lock onto air vehicles as well.
