  • Put yourself on view. This brings your talents to light.

  • @metaljacket1983123

No, he wasn't talking about inventors. While 'inventors' as we think of them, are makers, makers don't need to be 'inventors'.

He was talking about creating things. Like... writing a song, painting a picture- they are obvious ones which come to my mind. We may not all do particularly creative stuff like that, but we do all have the ability to. I think this video was really about accepting and embracing that part of human nature.

    :)

  • i bet neither one of the people who said something negative about this speech can talk in public. you d better start appreciating men who have something else to say rather than sit their his ass and criticize

  • Do some of you not understand what he's talking about? Reading some of these comments is a little depressing - I applaud you on your quest for knowledge/inspiration but TED is not about something tangible, it's about ideas. This video is not about "Americans making things!", but about humans as individual creatures full of unique abilities. Whether we're raising a child, filing our taxes, or creating the worlds next wireless platform...we're all making something. Physical or not. It's our nature

  • If this guy is saying we are all inventors, I would have to disagree. Yeah we COULD all be inventors or "makers" but that doesn't mean we ARE or we SHOULD. Honestly a dissapointing speech that I struggled to find a relivant message.

  • wasted 10 minutes of maker time watching this talk

Dale needs to go make something

  • wasted 10 minutes of maker time watching this talk

  • I'm a Maker ..I'm a Shaker, I'm a mighnight Baker. I get my music on the ruuuuuuunn...

  • what the hell, is he trying to get everybody to be creative and self-motivated to make stuff with such a boring presentation and output of ideas? No connection to our Dionysian side?

  • Lol, As I watch this I have a half completed bookshelf (from scratch, not ikea!), a bronze armor chest piece made from thousands of little scales, and jar off hand wound electromagnets next to me in the living room here.... I'm pretty sure I fall into the 'builder' category. lol

  • Anyone who needs a video on Youtube to inspire them to be a "Maker", will never understand what the rest of us were born with.

  • I Make.

  • I made me a sandwich today,and i also made a lot of feces.IMMA MAKER!

  • bs

  • what will america make? a fcking mess of everthing!

  • "lil bro into a lil sister's room!" that didnt come out right i think ?

  • germans are the best makers fact ! they are the standard for so many products

  • Americans and makers??? ROFL... yeah.. may be war and financial crisis makers

  • @sakokosa hahhaha ! right on !

  • bull shit makers

  • i like the part where he says "makers".

  • Interesting

  • I kept waiting for this video to get interesting

  • I stoped the video, built a rack, and started watching again.

  • Destroyers of the things we make as well.

  • I love how passionate this guy gets, he is genuinely excited to be talking about a subject that causes him to feel joy.

  • They cant even spell fair on their sign.

  • Where can i find the link for the Makers video

  • This was horrible, like listening to a project manager giving a presentation.

  • I thought most inventions were made in Europe, especially in Germany....

  • makers of reality: m.youtube.com/#/watch?xl=xl_blazer&v=0drT_L4G8w8

  • One of the worst TED talks ever.

  • @GHortaV TedxWomen? Hello?

  • Wake up america.

Don`t get too dependant on the chinese. They got your debt, what next :)

  • oh wow we're makers....so?

  • so?

  • I don't get where some of you get this "his saying only americans are makers" crap.

  • You don't have this in school? I always had 1 day every week in school where we would build stuff. Paintings, wooden models, paper models etc.

  • Makers of destrution

  • I am a maker. I am making a 3D model to revolutionize zippers as I watch this. Good times. ;-)

  • those arent muffins, theyre cupcakes!!

  • am not a maker i could care less ...

  • this talk should have been longer

  • @DarwinsCreator Many of us doubt we elected him the first time. All that dimpled chad bullshit in the media during the 2000 election? Not what those of us living in Volusia county were talking about. We were talking about how our ballot boxes went missing for two hours on election night, the story broke right before the news networks went from reporting Gore as winning to reporting Bush. I never saw mention of it again. Always seemed pretty suspect to me.

  • Why are people focusing on this "usa are makers" advert. It was in the 60's before major corporate globalisation when america really was in that postion.

  • A lot of these inventions are frivolous and borderline useless. I feel bad that more of our effort as a species doesn't go toward more sensible yet inspiring, subtle yet world-changing things.

  • 1:30 mr. garrisons revolutionary travel device. If he gets the controller in his mouth too, it will work much better.

  • U.S.A., more like U.S.GAY. ahhhhh am i right? am i right?

  • We create shit that is soon out-dated and useless to society.

That's why corporate 'america' is nearly bankrupt.

  • what has been happening to TED....much of the hard edge science and design is gone and now it's all touchy feely , leftish crap.

  • People do stuff...

Great talk, i didn't knew that.

  • ...also two heads are not better than one if they are both stupid :)

  • Making is one of the best and most positive characteristics of American culture. There was nothing negative in his speech, he was merely encouraging his countrymen to rekindle the maker spirit. Maker communities are open and welcoming to people from all over the world to join in.

  • It's interesting that after hundreds of thousands of years ....we are still just smashing rocks together with the Hydron? colider. creating fire and smashing an atom is the same thing :)

  • Americans, you had electric cars in the 90s but you crushed them into cubes out of fear and greed to maintain the status quo. All you are really interested in 'making' is money. You had your window, now your just another bloated, depressed country.

  • all i heard was america ... america... america ... america .... and then america

  • Thank the maker!

  • I hate it when people try to tell other people who they are.

  • @Aresftfun

I hate it when people hate other people when they don't get the purpose of other people's presentations

  • @ShApEsHiFt3r I hate it when people misunderstand people to think that "it" means that they hate the person doing "it".

  • may the maker watch over us.

  • woa??? 8000$ to get your satellite into space??? what???

  • The paranoia outsight of America astounds me. Nothing here says that other countries are unable to create or make or that they are not innovative. He's just saying that America was built by makers. And that's true. There's always been lots of innovation and initiative in America.

  • Though America has been very inventive and productive, they are also losing their footing. If they want to keep being thought of as invention champions, they better get their shit together. I don't really care which country is innovating the most, or even if it swells their ego. I just want the progress to happen. So I agree with the speaker, make more makers. Let the economy have the attribute of rewarding innovation, invention and "breakthroughs". In the long run it's better for all.

  • its that thumb in opposition thing ...really ...yes, we make tools and have done since the beginning of our time on this fourth rock from our sun ...we'd be wise to figure out how to make tools and toys with out MAKING garbage when we've had enough of that which we've already made.

  • most people these days can only push buttons and do what they're told to do... fuckin drones. no makers on that side of society

  • Haha Big Mouth Billy Bass! the BEST singer EVER.

  • =D

  • Good talk captain obvious.

  • Agree

  • Do Americans really believe they're the only one capable of making and innovating? "Americans made the world" ... right. When will Americans stop preaching how great they are? Just like any rich industrialized western country, Americans have a large amount of things needed to "make" : money and spare time.

  • @tifran9494 America was simply the first country in history to be founded on the notion that people should have the freedom and liberty to work towards their own ends, instead of serving a lord or a holy man. We have many times, failed to live up to this vision, right from the start. But that vision has defined what this country has been. For a great long stretch we were the safe harbor for the great minds of the world. Everyone came here because we represented a chance.

  • @tifran9494 At the same time, people were inspired to do the same thing in their own countries, but in the meantime, many inventions and developments were made by people from all over the world, in the United States; because, the environment here allowed it.

We do not believe that we are the only ones capable of making and innovating, but we do believe that we no excuse, given our history, to be lagging so far behind everyone else.

  • @t3tsuyaguy1

Dude, you almost had a VP who had a fucking exorcism and thinks she can see Russia from Alaska.

Again: the woman who almost became the #2 representative for the country has the mental capacity of an eight year old child.

    You also elected Bush.

TWICE.Gee, you wonder why are you guys are lagging behind?

  • @d3st88 You've done nice job exhibiting your intellectual superiority here. What with your lucid point by point analysis. Try re-reading my comment. Maybe you'll figure out why you just made yourself look like a jackass.

  • @t3tsuyaguy1 By environment, you mean money, right? You're in a country of Managers. They cherry-pick Indian and Chinese programmers and mathematicians, German scientists and classical musicians, British and French designers, directors, and actors (who conveniently drop the accent for y'all unless they play baddies), pay them better than they did at home, and then get all the credit.

It's a very clever way of working, but not something to be proud about.

  • @distortingjack You arrogant hypocrite. Shall I hold you responsible for the actions of the worst people in you're country? Shall I judge you without knowing anything about you? Shall I make a number of self righteous assumptions about your position instead of asking questions? Shall I pretend to know one fucking thing about your country, because of what I see in the media? If you want have a conversation, we can do that. If you want to flex you impotent rage, then fuck off!

  • @t3tsuyaguy1 shit doesnt make any sense towards the end.

  • @BriskAxe I'm not sure what you are referring to. I'd be happy to clear anything up.

  • @t3tsuyaguy1 Lagging so far behind? Click your heels three times and maybe it'll come true.

  • @SamSpade2010 I think I'll keep writing my congressman and senators, and campaigning for candidates willing to invest in research and development instead.

  • @tifran9494 correction the world around us was made by us. where now everything in america is made in china.

  • @tifran9494 Amazingly, much of what made America possible, came from Europeans, and other international sources. I used to hate the "Americans are big headed," stereotype. After spending 3 years with an American woman in my life, I know from how she, and her family act, the stereotype is indeed true.

  • @tifran9494 They will probably stop in 20 years time when China and USA has switched roles.

  • @tifran9494 I watched through that twice. He never says "Americans made the world." You should only use quotation marks if you're quoting.

  • @tifran9494 when we get over our inferiority complex

  • @tifran9494 That's a negative way of looking at it. He's not speaking to Americans specifically, he's speaking to humanity. If he were to be in your region he's say the same to you. Yes America is excessive in more ways than there is room to explain in this text box. Manifest your hearts desire regardless of ideas of financial compensation and you're vibing with Mr Dougherty here.

  • @tifran9494 that was an incredibly irrational reaction to this video. Let go of your hatred.

  • @tifran9494 If you lived in a more free-market economy, I'm sure the hacker types in your country would be every bit as innovative as those in the US. The burdens of excessive government destroys innovation. I only wish the US govt would shrink. A lot.

  • @tifran9494 Of course we don't think we made the world! Maybe let's say, "We made our world, the world I inhabit, my sphere of influence." I've seen amazing things all over the world.

  • @tifran9494 no ad hominems please.

  • @tifran9494, Americans are simply the most prolific makers of the 20th century. Mostly due to the abundance wealth, and spare time Americans had been afforded in the last century.

  • @tifran9494 i think you missed the whole point of the talk... every american or there family had to emigrate there from somewhere and we are all one race... your a maker too, if you choose it

  • @Tuzzie902

i believe he got the point of the talk, he was 'just saying' ;)

personally I find the talk a bit pointless.. as if nobody knew we are makers so he had to come on ted and tell us

  • @tifran9494 It's the popular culture. The advertising and even the news is non-stop flag-waving. Not that it is new for an empire to think it is 'chosen by god'.

Innovation follows money. A lot of it will be moving to China.

  • @ORCA4312 Innovation can stem from limitation.

  • @tifran9494 You misinterpreted what he said. The talk wasn't about just Americans, that short clip he showed was. But even so, that clip didn't say "Only us Americans are makers.". Them being makers doesn't prevent a person of another nationality from being a maker too. And by "we made the world around us" he didn't mean the whole world. The point was that the individual could look around at all the man-made objects and be proud he took part in building them.

  • @tifran9494 Yes, Americans are too proud and cocky sometimes, but it wasn't the case now. I am not American BTW, so I don't think I have a biased opinion.

  • @tifran9494 Where in the hell did you get "America is the only maker" from this video? Seriously?

  • @MRSketch09 Apparently tifran9494 if French and that explains it... French speakers have always been jealous of English speakers.

  • @tifran9494 Im pretty eager to hop on any anti american bandwagon there is, living in missouri i see alot of the cliches and stereotypes we're usually made fun of for, but I think your comment is more about jealousy than observation, and it wreaks of hatred. Way to be a douche.

  • @tifran9494 When will Americans stop preaching how great we are? NEVER. As our President said: "We do big things".

  • @tifran9494 I believe that what he is referring to when he says "we make the world around us" is not all the artifacts in the world, but the world as in the objects/things that he/Americans are surrounded with. Also, he is probably aware of the fact that many products come from other countries besides the United States of America, even though a little national pride never hurts. Best regards from Norway ;D

  • @tifran9494 like yeah without japanese ppl, there are no cellphones

  • @tifran9494

While you all swoop in and take a basic human attribute, making things( which is all this video is encouraging) and get your feelings hurt because you think this video is only about Americans. Well maybe you should look around. You're on an American website, watching videos by an American organization. It's only fair some people may want to talk about Americans and what they are doing.

  • @tifran9494 You must have never lived in USA. Money and time are not at all in excess here. It is just that people here have a genuine desire to benefit others and also have a genuine ability to rejoice in somebody else's success.

  • Human makes stuff, cool.

  • i missed the DETROIT talks? man i need to get on the mailing list.

  • good talk, shoulda been longer

  • it's not "scrape"er bike

    its "scrap"er bike

  • An unusually good talk from TED, considering its recent spate of bilge. Also, as a matter of obligation for Youtube, first.

  • @TRRProductions09 the only first I whole heartedly agree with

  • @TRRProductions09 could agree more
