you just need to press f-8 during startup.

when you come to a menu where you will find the safe mode,

press enter and wait. When you get there you usually log in, you will find a user called Administrator. Log in and you will be able to replace all other users' passwords in the controlpanel or cmd.

start into safe mode and log into the admin account and remove the pw of another account that you want to get onto

and it's not necessary to enter safe mode. on some windows, when at the log on screen, press ctrl alt del once or twice and you get the logon window where you can type your name and password. again - this might not work on all windows xps out there.

@bunalz well, normally the admin account Doesn't pop up unless ur using safe mode, and unless the admin account has a password this works, further more on most system's i've come across the admin account can not be disabled (excluding user made admin accounts)

The correct way without any programs would be to start up the computer in safe mode and when you get to the log in screen choose the administrator account (there should be 2 accounts) go to the control panel, user accounts, change account, pick your account and from there you should be able to remove the password and choose a new one.

I think what happend was that he locked himself out for typing in the password wrong too many times.

You don't need all of this crap to just CHANGE the password, as a matter of fact, its very simple in XP.

1)Open the 'RUN' application and type CMD.

2)type "net user" (without quotes)

3) You will see the admin name along with some others. Remember the account name of the person's password you want to change.

4) Type "Net User (the name here without the perenthsis) *" without quotes

Here is an example:

net user David *

Just to clarify, I mentioned OEM because if you bought the PC with OS pre-installed, manufacturer usually put features in place so that your 'default' Administrator account are retained during setup. If you installed XP from a retail CD or Restore disk, chances are you may've deleted or taken over that default account as your own(the account you forgot the password for). Then safe mode won't work for ya. Sry.

Forget all this tedious technicalities, just press F5 when you power on, boot into safe mode. Provided you have an OEM operating system, you should see an Administrator account that you don't see in Normal Mode. Just click on it and you'll be logged in. Change the password for the appropriate account like how you normally would the restart normally. Your password is changed! No software, no CDs, no headache!
