@TimLincecum211 Thanks 65 and still rolling....you any relation to a dentist in Austin Texas with the same last name? Or that great pitcher for that matter...
@slgeebrr no i wish. i'm 14 and i hate when kids my age skate to get sponsored. I've been told I could get sponsored but i tell them i just skate for fun. dont get my wrong i would love to get sponsored or go pro for that matter. but i just wanna have fun. the kids that do it just to get sponsored are ruining skateboarding in my opinion
Listen carefully at 0:14 and afterwards. Are the background voices saying "bust your buns??" If they are, that would be quite appropriate for a song about skateboarding! :)
Hey, what street was that? I moved to Hawaii Kai in 1965. This video is awesome. Trying to take my memory back to figure out where in Portlock this is. thanks for sharing this.
In 1963 in the beginning we not only did not have grip tape. We also did not have nice oak boards. It was a skate nailed to a 2x4 and steep hills with a decent sidewalk. We got our share of "Sidewalk scrapes" But none of us suffered any serious injuries. We thought we were invincible. LOL! amazing we survived !!
I think, maybe i´m the only sidewalk surfer in brazil!
without do anything i catch up my skateboard, and let start ans sidewalk surfing session, tricks: hang tens, one foot slides, gohst jumps, low drivings, and sometimes i put the beach boys for my session! its fantastic!!
The new generation of skateboard dont know what is sidewalk surfing!!! Death for them!
@kriegdouch this is 8mm home movie film that I converted to DV using a primitive mirror/rear projection screen box. The beeping is the smoke detector going off as 30 years of accumulated dust started to smolder on the 8mm projector.......
Why bare feet? Another reason was before there was grip tape OR real skate shoes, bare feet gave you the best traction on the board. The boards were SOLID pieces of oak or ash that had smooth varnish and NO flexibility! The wheels were not really clay, but were hard rubber. They looked like clay and had no traction. If you hit a small pebble or a sidewalk crack, you wiped out! BTW, I grew up in the 60's and 70's in Southern California (Santa Barbara to be exact)
You guys were the true pioneers. Thanks for putting this up - it's made my day! I was lucky enough to catch it second time round over 30 years ago and still skating. The sun's out in London and off to carve some hills right now! Peace. :)
This is pure honest groovin before the era of competetive strive;there were no rules, you paid your money and rolled..these guys were having fun first with nothing to prove to nobody..in 1964 they had no concept of "youtube" 40yrs later!,where people would unfairly compare them to the generations after who had radical terrain made for them, and far better equipment.these are the origial dudes ,and the archetypal "unknown skateboarders",long before youtube became the be-all-end-all boasting ground!
I meant the very kids you see here are the same type of kids the Z BOYS WERE.. a bunch of kids who just wanted to have fun. You take things too literally, pull the dick out of your ass and put it back in your mouth where it belongs
Those were 1965 "Makaha" boards with clay wheels...long before Hobie got into the picture...and who is Lief Garit?....Most of this filmed In kaneohe and Sunset Beach Hawaii....
its leif garrett skakeboard movie cir 1978 its on youtube i think this movie started the late 70s skakeboard rebirth . my brother has a 1977? hobie skatke board ,still has the orig box for it in moms garage somewhere
i like that old skool style that was about more curving and not bout ollies, kickflips, grinds, etc.I esp like da 70s dogtown style. they didnt do any tricks in air, they did da sidewalk. old skool rocks!
it was about surfing u did it when the surf was down n shit u did it to improve ur surfing and u did what you would do in surfing, big carves n shit brah
man i wish skateboarding was like it used to be back in the 70s, it was all for fun and it didnt matter if you sucked or not. Now its all about judgement and money
everything "cool" eventually sells out. Now it's more then a hobby.. it's a sponsered sport, lifestyle/fashion, and ofcourse a business.. which is were i think the coflicts stem from
see brother, thats why i skate old skool. bc i hate the fact of being sponsored n crap like that. but i live old skool too though. haha. nobody wants to do the old trix anymore. theyre neglected. its all abt 900, n ssbsts. i hate it
brah every thing changes, old school is sick but you can't hate the new stuff it's just evolved, do ya hate new surfing thats all evolved, i don't skate i surf and when theres no surf i will take ma longboard (skateboard) out and practice so im like you old school is the way to go but new school is still sick
You said it well. It was also more of a challenge to sidewalk surf-I love that term and still use it-with the cruder form of skateboards and the people who could do it well were the real pros. However, I'll admit I like to watch people skate on the new improved boards. Unfortunately I am not a skater myself.
for one thing, back in the 60's there were only 10 guys making money skateboarding,, and skateboarding only lasted 3 years in the 60's before it disappeared.. There wasn't enough time for it to evolve like it has in the past 25 years since it came back from the dead in the early 80's.. Not counting the 5 or more years it boomed in the 70's.. Kids today have had skating in their lives there whole life..and it hasn't change much in 10 years..
whoa im in awe.

The first segment in near Kapea St. in Kaneohe.
The majority of footage was shot in a partially completed subdivision above Sunset Beach where they put the streets in before the houses.
