Great, the writers are having a good time while hundreds (thousands) of people (everybody else who worked on the shows) are out of work. Look, if think the writers have a point about unequal pay, but come on! You make good money! What are you really complaining about? If you don't like the current studio situation, start your own studio!!!! Anyway, just me venting....
Start your own studio? Continue being paid 0 dollars and 0 cents for work you create that is put online? Hmm, seems simple enough. Jeez, how come you aren't a labor negotiator?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Writers in the "Guild" aren't getting paid $0.00 (well maybe now, since they aren't working). The average salary is for WGA members is nearly $70,000 annually. I know they don't make as much as producers and executives, but, guess what, tough titties. You "rate what you skate."
I make 70K as a software engineer in Oklahoma. For an unskilled laborer that would be great money. But 70K for someone who has to live in LA and can't count on working more than a few months out of the year and is making their bosses hundreds of millions off of their work is not that sweet of a deal.
So. Many employees, including writers, artists and programmers are salaried and make money for their employers, with no commission or residuals. And compared to the political climate at home and the war in Iraq, their plight is insignificant.
Go ahead, tell the soldiers in Iraq making $20-30K a year that living in southern California and making $70K a year writing for a TV show isn't a sweat deal and you're likely to get punched in the throat.
This is a completely specious argument. I could equally say: 'Go tell a penniless survivor of the Second Congo War or a woman raped in Darfur that the soldiers in Iraq making $20-30K a year isn't a sweet deal'.
I don't think I've seen the WGA claim that their cause was the most important issue in today's world. They just want fair pay for those who do not make anything near that 70K.
The average salary for a working member. The majority of the guild is not working at any point in time, not just during a strike. Get the numbers right if your going to throw them around. An the "rate what you skate" line was just uncalled for.
One has to wonder if the WGA happened to notice that they were being somewhat unsubtly mocked by the D there. I mean, first portraying the Internet residuals like a big juicy cream pie, then playing City Hall with the writers in the role of the rioters (and if you know the original song, the mockery is less subtle yet), then playing "The Government Sucks" which parodies the whole genre of protest songs ...
All of which I approve, incidently. The WGA needs some boot-to-butt mockery.
It's all a big freaking party for you writers meanwhile the working crews are screwed by your strike. We don't have $100K in our saving account or stocks to trade in. You are creating real financial hardship and partying like it's all a big joke. They roll back IATSE rates and you want more?? You and the producers are like watching two fat kids fight over a steak dinner in the Sudan.
I'm a writer on strike. I have $5,048.81 in checking and no savings or stocks. Luckily (and ironically), I've received residuals lately which have helped pay the bills. I was writing for a major network show when the strike started, a job that paid me way less than I made as a writers' assistant 13 years ago. So be careful before you generalize. The "fat kids" you should be angry at are those refusing to negotiate, while thousands of us go without income.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You must be a pretty crappy writer. The WGA should not be a social welfare program. All the writers on my show are also "producers" and make more than twice your checking account balance every week. As far as the residuals go ask some electric or grip (who is out of work and has 2 kids) how he is going to pay the bills and Christmas.
At least we agree that your generality only applies to top level writer/producers on primetime network shows. Maybe you don't know what the pay is like for mid and low-level writers on other shows. Also, last year 55% of the money that went into your union's pension and health fund came directly from the residuals you refer to as "social welfare". If we lose residuals, your P&H takes a massive hit. This strike is about the long-term, and no one's saying it isn't painful in the short-term.
I work on prime time network shows and I'll admit that is my experience. My impression of them working is a party atmosphere. They bring in very fancy catered lunch daily. When we wrap at 5 am on Saturday after a 75 hour week they have been home for 12 hours. If I was to take a low budget union job I would find myself working for 1/2 the pay. That's why I don't. Honestly what does a low lever WGA writer make an hour?
So there's no official indication that this is a plan by Time Warner, but I guess it's theoretically possible that a company more vulnerable to the effects of the WGA strike would be easily taken-over by one of the bigger companies.
Makes you wonder what some of the AMPTP members true motivation is for not wanting to make a decent offer to the Writers.
