This depiction was at least somewhat more realistic in 1974 - the year the movie "Earthquake" was released. I'm not sure how accurately this would match an acutal event here in Los Angeles in 2010, but there is indeed some truth to it. Of course, LA has never been subjected to a 9.2 - the magnitude depicted in the movie - quake. One thing for sure, such an event would be catastropic, even if less so than in 1974.

Hi there - Which was the approximate length of the Alaska earthquake in 1964. It had a 9.2 magnitude and lasted five to seven minutes! Incidently, the earthquake portrayed in the movie had the same magnitude.

Kudos! Great survival tips tempered with good humor - "Don't eat chicken and drink beer" had me laughing hard. I live yards away from the San Andreas in Palm Springs. While I don't like quakes, they happen, and knowing how to become one with the earth and stay calm can mean the difference between choosing to live and choosing to die.

@udonthavetotellme Hi - Actually, the elevator most likely would not have gone all the way down.  It would have gone to nearest floor, opened up and shut down. It may have even shut down before even making it to floor. Had it dropped anyway, the emergency brakes would have been activated, and there would not have been a crash.
