My dream car is a Lotus Elise or Exige with an American v8, maybe supercharged. V8 in Lotus means even slower car at cornering, terrible handling, too much oversteering, and too much wheel spin every time you push gas pedal. One thing you need to understand, that racing games on PC are not reality.
Lotus is perfectly matched with small and powerful 4 cyls rev engine. R260 Cup editions actually outhandle almost every amarican V8. If you wanna power and handling in same time, you should buy Ultima Kit car with LS7 V8, or astonishing Corvette ZR1.
Well something what cost over 600,000 $ and has 1200 bhp, it's expect to run at Ring faster than 125,000 $ ZR1, or 120,000 ACR, but it cant. That's disappointing.
Didn't but that car is made for purpose like Veyron, handling can be great, but with about 900-1000 on wheels, you cant do just more than lots of wheel spin and burnout.
Also i think Ultima GTR offers cheaper version with LS3 tuned and include dry sump. Something about 480 hp and 950 kg, sounds pretty good, for just 55,000 $ in UK.
GTR 640 or 720 versions cost 90,000 $. But i would rather (of course if you have money) buy a ZR1. That's perfectly build US car ever.

@noshabibis don't let your bias for corvette cloud your judgement. Lotus cars are VERY lightweight and have inhuman handling and fuel economy. A corvette Z06 does NOT get 36 mpg on a highway and 30 every where else, but the Lotus Elise DOES.

Spotted a black Elise a few days ago and followed it for a few blocks. (no Idea which engine it had)
On the road it has the same kind of presence as a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Only difference is that u can't hear it from several blocks away like u can a Ferrari or Lambo. (Sounds great for a 4-cylinder though)
And even the top spec Elise is cheaper than the cheapest Porsche Boxster. Why do people buy the Boxster?
I agree! I have an 85 MR2 and it feels so raw. I love the fact that it has no power accessories and basically and engine and the bare essentials. I want to attain the level of performance from my MR2 that this Lotus Elise SC reaches.
Why do people compare the Elise to a Corvette.. When you want to compare an european sportscar to anything america... the Corvette is all you have. Americans have only one internationally competetive sportscar while I could mention probably 40 great european recent sportscars.. Thats why this ZR1 gets compared to everything from Bugatti Veyron to the Elise even tho they are totally different cars belonging to totally different segments of the market.
you can compare it to a ford gt wich would smoke it or a dodge viper wich wold smoke it and im pretty sure saleen is an american car that would eat it for breakfast high performance mustangs like the roush, saleen, gt 500 and super snake. any of these cars could compete with or destroy this car. im not sayin its not a sweetcar just americans have many cars that can compete. and your comparing us to a whole contenant with many countrys when we are just one
The Mustang isnt great. Just for an american car. Originally its just like any boring midrange BMW. All that super snake, Roush and all that are just tuneshops that fit blowers and turbos to them. The Elise is a 1.8 liter sportscar damnit, instead of learning that you can build modern and good things out of light weight materials, you go on and on about the old fashioned 2 ton steel with huge V8s. Two different worlds. BTW the Ford GT was great... guess why. Because Lotus helped them build it.

@Dimitri0809 The latest Mustangs (2011+) and Corvettes are fast in a straight line and around corners. They're also livable on a daily basis. Aside from a select few enthusiasts, most are not going to drive an Elise daily. It's used as a weekend car. At $50k+, it's a toy for those with higher income only.
I'm not dissing the Elise...I'm in the market for one now. I just think you need to evaluate the reasoning behind the design of the Corvette and Mustang.
@Dimitri0809 your comment is filled with misinformation. the new mustang is completely redesigned, it does 12s stock and has the suspension to back it up. theres a video online of the new m3 being compared to it and when they took them both on the twisty road course the BMW did it only .09 seconds faster while costing way more money.

Unlike an Atom or Caterham u can use an Elise as an everyday car because it has a windscreen, roof, boot, heater, aircon, electric windows, cupholder, airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, etc.

Why are people comparing the elise to the vette. They are completely different cars.
The elise is basically a road going go kart. One of the most fun cars you are ever likely to drive.
The vette is more of a muscle car, and quite a decent one at that. That will easily out perform the elise as it has almost twice the power.

Why do people compare the Elise to a Corvette.. When you want to compare an european sportscar to anything america... the Corvette is all you have. Americans have only one internationally competetive sportscar while I could mention probably 40 great european recent sportscars.. Thats why this ZR1 gets compared to everything from Bugatti Veyron to the Elise even tho they are totally different cars belonging to totally different segments of the market.

you can compare it to a ford gt wich would smoke it or a dodge viper wich wold smoke it and im pretty sure saleen is an american car that would eat it for breakfast high performance mustangs like the roush, saleen, gt 500 and super snake. any of these cars could compete with or destroy this car. im not sayin its not a sweetcar just americans have many cars that can compete. and your comparing us to a whole contenant with many countrys when we are just one

The Mustang isnt great. Just for an american car. Originally its just like any boring midrange BMW. All that super snake, Roush and all that are just tuneshops that fit blowers and turbos to them. The Elise is a 1.8 liter sportscar damnit, instead of learning that you can build modern and good things out of light weight materials, you go on and on about the old fashioned 2 ton steel with huge V8s. Two different worlds. BTW the Ford GT was great... guess why. Because Lotus helped them build it.

I don't want to join this stupid "my country is better than yours" discussion, but all the great car making countries in Europe combined (UK, Italy, Germany, France) still have less population than the USA.
I don't quite understand why a huge and car-crazy country like the USA has so few sports car manufacturers.

Yeah I know.. Its like Harley Davidson.. Everybody can see that Harleys are are super old fashioned both in technology and engineering compared to the Japanese sportsbikes. Honda, Suzuki and the rest. And the Harley seats are made for huge american arses. But if thats what you want then everything else is shit. And if we dont agree then we hate america. Americans should learn from stuff instead of fight it all the way. Their car business isnt exactly fantastic these days.

Yes but unfortunantly most car companies are dominated by biased opinions rather than using their R&D to create a car that will suit a large group of people.
The Mustangs and Corvettes are still being designed in very much the same way because the older generations don't want a differn't design.
But when it comes to these kind of debates
The Lotus is specifically designed for those who appreaciate cornering over big V8 power.
There will always be a car that suits the common eye.

@Dimitri0809 The latest Mustangs (2011+) and Corvettes are fast in a straight line and around corners. They're also livable on a daily basis. Aside from a select few enthusiasts, most are not going to drive an Elise daily. It's used as a weekend car. At $50k+, it's a toy for those with higher income only.
I'm not dissing the Elise...I'm in the market for one now. I just think you need to evaluate the reasoning behind the design of the Corvette and Mustang.

@Dimitri0809 your comment is filled with misinformation. the new mustang is completely redesigned, it does 12s stock and has the suspension to back it up. theres a video online of the new m3 being compared to it and when they took them both on the twisty road course the BMW did it only .09 seconds faster while costing way more money.
the comment about the corvette is just plain ignorant. its an all out sports car and the new ZR1 did a record breaking lap around the nurburg ring.

First of all, that's a Toyota I-4 powerplant. Secondly, the AC Ace was massaged with "shit american parts" and ended up as the Shelby Cobra, one of the most venerated and desired vehicles in motor history.

and did you race it in a straight line? or on a circuit? because i know the exige (with 160 horsepower) is faster than the mustang (300 horsepower) around the top gear test track. in fact, it's faster than the c6 corvette, ferrari 575, dodge viper, aston martin db9, etc. etc.

no need to prove you wrong, it's pretty believable. the corvette obviously has a better power to weight ratio with 426 horsepower and 3000 lbs compared to the elise's 220 horsepower and 1900 lbs.
but there's no need to act like a lunatic redneck when saying it. just because it's faster doesn't make it better. the ford gt is faster around a track than the ferrari 575, but does that make it better? not on your life.

Ford GT is faster than the Ferrari. Corvette is faster than the Elise. I care about speed and performance. I raced them both so i can find out which is faster. an Elise with a decent setup vs a corvette with a good setup would win on a real circuit like Laguna Seca or Infineon. Your 'Vette would only win on a circle track where it has plenty of time to reach peak gears. you won't see any car take a chicane in 5th gear. ever.

I Finally saw a Lotus Elise on the road today!
After a long time wishing. (I have a Corvette)
We were at opposite stoplights. He was first in line, so he kind of punched it.
I saw it drive past me, and heard that engine red line.
I kind of had high expectations of the sound - it sounded like an Asian tuner, which is bad, if you ask me.
As for seeing the body in person, it looks pretty cool - but not in line with exotic Italians.

Unlike an Atom or Caterham u can use an Elise as an everyday car because it has a windscreen, roof, boot, heater, aircon, electric windows, cupholder, airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, etc.
It's not just a race car with number plates. It's a proper road car.
