  • The Rigante series (4 books) is another great work by David Gemmel - may he rest in peace.

  • I'm a fan of the Empire series and A song of fire and ice

  • Lion Of Macedon is the best book I've ever read, closely followed by David Gemmels Troy trilogy. A remarkable author with a remarkable talent. R.I.P

  • Definitely better than LotR!! My favorite SERIES ever! If you read Magician, you have to finish off the whole saga. Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon! Sethanon, IMO, is the best book of the series. There are other books based in this world using some of these characters, but the Riftwar Saga consists of Magician, Silverthorn and Sethanon. I've tried many times to get through LotR and it's just REALLY overwritten.

  • someone has probably brought this up but magician is part of a trilogy, which is the part of a whole series, 19 books now and still going on. (excluding the off plot ones like Daughter of the Empire) - so why is he so adamant that it is a stand alone book?

  • god i really dislike a song of ice and fire, read up to halfway of the latest book and just cant keep reading it, so gloomy...

  • War of the Flowers

  • I totally agree about Magician, its the best... Base model fantasy book. I think LOTR is better in some ways, only if you like extreme detail, and a damn lot of fantasy is based on LOTR type scope and ideas, even magician. But a Song of Ice and Fire i think is the best fantasy book ive read! its written so well and intricately and just has no bull. none of that "here's the little hero to be" and right from the start you know by the end of the book they win the girl, win the war, and the crown

  • Magician is good, but not great. It's actually a little dated now, but you can't blame Fiest for that, he was one of the earlier fantasy authors. There are parts of the story that get a little boring, and it certainly shouldn't be rated anywhere near LoTR. Lion of Macedon on the other hand is one of the truly great fantasy novels. I agree with you that Parmenion is perhaps the greatest fantasy character of all time. David Gemmell was a master.

  • What do you guys think of David Gemmell? He's my favourite author,

  • :D feist is a freaking master of fantasy.

His world is way more detaild then the world of Tolkien. (love LotR too dont get me wrong)

  • I advice everyone to get the A Song of Ice and Fire series and the Malazan book of the fallen series....they are regarded the best fantasy series out there....realli mature unlike most fantasy books n got some of the nastiest characters

  • My Mum Told me to get The Magician...I thought it would be some crap story about a boy discovering he's really good at tricks and is taken on by a circus.....IT WASN'T...Best Book I've ever read AND the series gets SOOOOOOO much better I would DEFINTLEY advise getting it NOW!!!!!

  • raymond e feist is by far the best fantasy authour in my opinion but david gemmel and dave eddings follow quite closely.

  • okay you've convinced me i've decided to order witch fire now i hope its as good as you've said

  • a really awsome series is the Sword Of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

  • You sir, are awesome.

Thanks for the recommendations. I am going to read every book you mentioned. Starting with Lion of Macedon, coz I've read a few of David Gemmell's books and loved them all. Then I will read Magician.

    It's all falling into plan.

  • Great recommendations !

  • I've read two of the 3 books-Lion of macedon(fave book) and daughter of the empire. Those are really good books. I'm reading the second book servant of the empire now. I havn't read Magician, my dad has but i'm not really a fan of raymond E feist-Yet....

  • magician is the book that gets you hooked! Best book ever

  • stan nicholas 'orcs' is the best ever.

gemells good but doesn't really go out of his genre and take risks, also alot of analogies made by certain characters are exactly the same in other books, 'if wishes were fishes poor men wouldn't starve' is used in quite a few of them. good author though r.i.p

  • just thought i should say that if you were to read lion of macedon then you should read ghost king and last sword of power first then read the john shannow books after, they're all cleverly connected.

  • Safeness incarnate. Lion of Macedon f***in rules! As does its sequel, Dark Prince. They are my two fave Gemmell books (though ya gotta love the Druss and Shannow books too)

  • Hello sir... I enjoyed your video very much. I will certainly look into the books you mentioned. Have you checked out The Lies of Locke Lamora. Lots of hype around that book right now and it was a very fun read.

  • Thanks for the vid. I was looking what to read while waiting for WoT book 12 and ASOIAF. I am going to read Magician and wanted to let people who are also interested that Magician is Magician:Apprentice and Magician:Master in 1 book. Of course buy the Authors Preferred Edition. I figured I can finish this by the next Paolini book which I will read simply because it exists. So next I have Magician:Master and Daughter of the Empire and now need a new bookshelf :)

  • sry one question, whats the name of the book by David Gemmell? Line of Master?

  • Lion of Macedon

  • I agree that R E Feist (the Riftwar saga especially) is better than lord of the rings. The characters are very likeable and well rounded, and there is a lot of them which i love.

Just finished the serpent war saga which was very good too, especially the first two parts. Otherwise i strongly recommend...i think it was... Krondor: Tear of the gods. Good blog, thanks man

  • Have you read 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss? It is certainly something to check out while waiting on 'A Dance with Dragons.'

  • For fantasy/adventure/historical fiction I recommend just a few:

    (1) Anything by Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Anansi Boys, Sandman series).

    (2) The Winter King series by B. Cornwell

    (3) Hidden Empire series by Kiven Anderson

    (4) The Silmarillion by Tolkien

    (5) Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield (See also "300")

    (6) Birds of Prey by Wilbur Smith, part of the Courtney series by Wilbur Smith.

    (7) I Claudius & Claudius the God by Robert Graves

    (8) The Gunslinger series by Stephen King.

  • Yeah, I agree with reading Magician...but better than LOTR? I don't know. Have you read Joe Abercrombie's The First Law? I think those books should be read for anybody waiting on ADWD. I enjoy the blogs.
