I had this and tons of other MM playsets, I saved all of them, but somehow they were "lost" after I moved out of my parents' house. I still find a little piece from one of them, like a lamp post or bridge every once in a while when I visit them :(

It was always a pain in the ass to close the toolbox with all of the parts inside.

It wasn't the choking kids that stopped production, it was the buyout of Galoob by Hasbro. According to Hasbro, Micro Machines wasn't profitable enough to keep going, but some of the doll lines were.

The loose cars that are not in the box are worth $0.99+ depending on their year and how rare they are. I just got a Blue Angels set that is worth $60 now. So Id say the original cost of these were over $500 now worth about over $1500.

Rarity doesn't determine the value all that much, demand trumps rarity every time. An original 1987 set can be worth anywhere from $10 to over $100 depending on which cars and who wants it.
