I built one of those things about 20 years ago, nice work but as I remember the battery got hot and discharged fairly quickly because the circuit never breaks during operation, is your the same way?

You explained how to build it, but you didn't explain how it works. The electric current in the coil of wire creates a magnetic field, which repels/attracts the magnetic field in the refrigerator magnet.
