What a great island Jamaica is! All of the prejudice of 300+ years of white man oppression and yet the people are still able to smile and dance as well as revolutionise 20th century music! Hail Norman Manley and the PNP!
Well, you were quick to criticize me for asking a question. You never answered my actual question. What are pomps? You don`t even know because it is jargon, not language.
I'd imagine, in the context its being used in, that they're using pomp as the stem of "pompous". Also because i think the adjectives are similar and the fact pomp would go better with pride than "pompous and pride". Hope I gave you an idea what pomp means, but I could be wrong
hi my dad told me about this song reminds me of him so much when we were kids ...the song won a competition for the song for the carnival at the time ...like eurovision comp and pomp and pride was like dreessingh up and feeling fine in you best clothes feeling good etc etc

Hi.I'm Japanese.
Please someone tell me the real lyric of this song.
Indeed "opulin"and"Iceland" are include in the lyric?
If so,please tell the meaning.
Which of "vanity" and ”confidence” close to "Pomps" ?(I want to know plus image or not)

@FuckKandC pomps comes from pomposity, which is a synonym of arrogance, but the toots interpretate it as feeling happy and proud

oh so this is a ska cover of Elgars Pomp and Pride?
I never would've guessed I was so blown away by toots voice. I knew it sounded familiar though
SoldierofFortune07 2 years ago
Not ska at all; the song is reggae/rocksteady.
rosco0101 2 years ago
oh my mistake. I just made that assumption because Toots and the maytals were from the first wave of ska
SoldierofFortune07 2 years ago
they were reggae mostly not much ska. this song is considered early roots reggae
