  • This software looks fantastic? does it support key frames? If so how do you use them?

  • @SamyAdel9

Key frames are used to control where things like pans, zooms, rotations start and stop. Take a lok at the Simple Pan movie to see how to use them. You can also draw key frames and view them in the light box so you can draw the inbetweens. Look at Jason's drawing tutorials to see how they are used.

  • The tracing pen (the one that looks like a fountain pen) will change the color of any lines it passes over to whatever the currently selected color is. So if you want black you can trace them with the tracing pen while the color is set to black.

  • how do i trace my cells with black ink

  • Is it possible to import separate images (in my case scanned drawn animation)?

Becase i need a program where i can join the images - speed up the frame rate - and export it in good quality so that the drawings will remain as they were. is that possible in this program?

  • @Midchrome

That's what FlipBook is most famous for. For many years now the feature animators at all the big studios have used FlipBook to scan, test and time their drawings in order to get their animation to be what we see when we go to the movies. EVERY MAJOR FEATURE FILM going back to the Wild Thornberry's Movie was done just like that in FlipBook.

  • How is the rendering power? Can it render 1080p?

  • @cookie123456789012

    Absolutely!

  • What some people have to learn is that TALENT, ART SKILL and imagination is what you need to get professional results. The tools provided seems more than a luxury for a solo animator to kick out great master pieces. Having said that, I'm gonna play around with this software some more.

  • Now that seems iffy to me, Both you and Toon Boom claim to use your own products for the Princess and the Frog, my own guess here is that they use a combonation of your guys's programs, but I don't know.

On a side note, I'm considering buying Flipbook Studio 6, and in the example scene provided, I wanted to know if that's the quality I would get out of my animations.

  • @XxSuRrEaLiStSxX

Actually we're both right and so are you. The ink & paint department used Toon Boom. When the animators were given Toon Boom they refused to use it. They said animation is hard enough without having to use this software. Then they requested FlipBook and that's what they used. So you just have to decide whether you want to be an ink and painter or an animator. Then you know what to use.

Use the option in the import dialog to import your drawings as drawings instead of as overlays. Then you'll be able to edit them.

  • Beauuuutiful walk cycle!

  • It can work, but the results from a camera are not as good as a scanner. The lighting is inconsistent so the painting won't look as good and the resolution is much lower. After all the time you spend drawing all the images, it's worth spending a little bit more time to scan and get really good results.

  • just bought Flipbook lite since it was pretty cheap and seems like it would speed up colouring and assembling the drawings and paintings.

Will a camera+copy stand+a little photoshop work ok for capturing the cleaned up paper drawings? Scanning them takes forever and I don't have one of those awesome auto-loading scanners

  • this is a real nice presentation - it sure looks like a great program to use - I might try it some day - thank you for this introduction sir

  • this program really helped me with my school project

  • Yo! Has it got onion skinning

  • FlipBook has more onion skinning power and versatility than any other program I know of.

  • do u have to pay money to get it?

  • You can use the trial version for free but it has a large watermark on every frame.

After you pay for it you get a code to unlock it and then you can make new scenes without the watermark.

  • Then FlipBook is a great way to practice.

You can either trace images from another layer or you can look at them and then turn them off and try to draw them.

  • what if we pretty much suck at drawing

  • Then this is a great way to learn because you can load an image into the background and trace over it in the foreground. You can also hide and show the background image if you want to draw first and then compare your drawing to the image in the background.

  • where can you get this?

  • You can get it on our web site.

  • I have a question fabout this program, how do you use the lightbox? I tried adjusting it's settingd but all I ever get is just the frame that I am working on. How can I view the prevoious frame(s) while working on another?

  • We plan to do a tutorial on this but here's a quick answer to your question.

In the light box dialog you must select either you want to Animate Straight Ahead or you are Inbetweening. If you select Straight Ahead you can see up to 5 previous images when the light box is on. If you select Inbetweening you should check Previous and Next and if you want you can see the next 2 and the previous 2 images. You can also see images from other levels by checking the Additional Reference Level boxes.

  • @kentbraun thanks!

now all I have to do is unlock it, but only in september..

  • In the light box dialog you can choose the settings that you want. Then to use it you just turn the light bulb on. To go back to seeing just the frame you're working on you turn the light bulb off.

  • wow this looks so cool this looks like you can do so much great job on making this softwear

  • kent, cool video. any idea on when more tutorials are gonna be made? very interested in buying flipbook pro very soon....

  • but how do u make it sooo neat ???!!!!

  • Ok, thank you. And one more thing, is it tablet compatible? I use a wacom tablet.

  • Sure, it's compatible with Wacom tablets.

  • Is there a way to copy parts of images and paste them into other images? Like, say you don't want to redraw a pair of eyes or something.

  • Sure, there is. Click on the select tool, drag in the image to select the part you want then cut or copy it and paste it into any cel you want. When you paste it in it will "float" so you can drag it around to position it. You can also resize it, rotate it and even squash or stretch it. Once you've got it where you want it, just click outside the box to drop it into place.

  • How do you make it so the "Frame is Modified, Keep Changes" box doesn't come up every time you draw a frame and then arrow key to go to the next frame. That is driving me crazy!

  • Turn on the AutoSave option. (It's under the Options menu.) Then it will automatically save your edits to any cel whenever you leave that cel and go to another.

  • @kentbraun Thanks Kent, that fixed it up. Perfecto!

  • any body have the key to unlock the software

  • NOBODY has a key to unlock the software on your computer.

EVERY computer requires a different key.

You can buy it for only $39. Do you really want to give up your integrity for so little money?

  • Oh, I forgot to mention, the animators on The Princess and The Frog used FlipBook. And they're using it again on the new Winnie the Pooh movie. And they're using it at Pixar on The Bear and The Bow.

FlipBook's credits and customers speak for themselves.

  • seriously this is hard to use i gave up after 5 minutes

  • Everyone else says it's really easy.

Listen to the testimonial from Eric Goldberg on our home page. He says "The learning curve has been very, very fast. It's very intuitive, very natural for drawing. The draw tool is fabulous. The light box is fabulous." "I highly recommend it!"

Eric is THE most famous living animator & 1 of the top 5 in the world. He is a lead animator on Disney's new Winnie the Pooh movie. He was a supervising animator & character designer on The Princess and The Frog.

  • I thought The Simpsons Movie was created with Toon Boom..

  • That's what Toon Boom wants you to think. But only the ink & paint department used Toon Boom. The animators used FlipBook.

That's the same as in The Princess and The Frog. The animators were given Toon Boom at first but after trying to use it for some time they gave up on it. So they went back to what most of them had used on the last 6 or 7 films they'd worked on, which is animating with paper and pencil and using FlipBook to test their drawings, work out the timing and preview the results.

  • The people that did the ink & paint used Toon Boom but the animators chose to use FlipBook instead.

  • @kentbraun

But which version i can download from the site for a trial, i noticed there are different version of your program 4,5 and 6..im confused

  • You can download any of them. But version 6 is the current version. That's the one you should evaluate.

The earlier versions are there for people who bought FlipBook a while ago and need to download it again for some reason.

  • I don't understand what is the difference between flipbook lite, pro or studio. And what flipbook is this?

  • i have to get this program for school, along with autodesk maya ,3D Max , and the whole adobe production suite.

  • all the youtube vids I've seen for flipbook show loops. Can it do things that aren't loops too? Can you make a ten min animated vid from it? What software is best for that?

  • FlipBook is the software that the professional animators used to make The Princess and the Frog, Enchanted, The Simpsons Movie, Curious George, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Rugrats Go Wild and other full length movies. So it can definitely do things that aren't loops.

A 10 minute movie would contain lots of scenes. Each scene is made in its own FlipBook file. Then the scenes are exported as movie files and combined in a video editor like Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Premier or Final Cut Pro.

  • Thanks for the vid! It's really awesome!

  • how do you loop the background?

  • There isn't enough space in this comment section to give you a detailed explanation but basically you just start the pan and go as far as the length of your background lets you. When you run out of background reposition it back to the beginning and start it panning again.

  • Awesome..

  • thank you very much, I've searched a lot and finally i know what program to use !!! thanks again

  • which flipbook is this. pro? lite?

  • This video was done in FlipBook Pro.

(You can tell by the 3 sound columns in the xsheet).

But all of the features that are demonstrated are in FlipBook Lite and FlipBook Studio as well.

Beyond what you see here, FlipBook Studio and FlipBook Pro also have advanced lip sync features as well as painting with grads and textures.

The other big difference between Lite, Studio and Pro are the number of frames and layers that you get.

  • I've been watching a bunch of vids wondering which software I should buy.

Looks like this is the one for me. Now if I only had the money!!(laughs)

Oh yeah, which computers can use it? I have a Windows 98.

  • It will run on anything from Windows 95 to Windows 7 as well as on OS X from Tiger on.

  • We have the entry level version that is on sale right now for $39 and from there the price goes up in steps to the Pro version, that the major studios all use, which is on sale right now for $299.

  • this is so kool! how much does it cost?

  • i just got it today it very nicley done

  • I am loving flipbook!

  • thanks wonderful...need more

  • this is good first eva tut i have seen so far am going to get all my frends to watch n learn
