@N75911 No it was about the same speed. You can clearly see the cone appearing at 0:02. If the plane had moved slower than sound then the sonic boom would have reached them before the plane did.
Also, not EVERY sonic boom breaks glass and ear drums. Watch the episode of Mythbusters where they tested that. Only after like 5 consecutive super sonic passes did they break a single piece of glass and it was only because of the warping of it. Now wheather or not it will do any damage toyour ears, I couldn't say for sure.
To all who say they were at the show and say you didn't hear the clap, he isn't going the same speed all the way across the beach. This guy was probably just in the sweet spot to get it. If you didn't hear it, you had to have been passed by this point already. This IS a sonic boom, hence the clap. Its all the sound hitting at once.
I know that you can see the cloud but still if you compare the sound of this fly by to other f-18 videos they sound alot different. This sounded exactly like he broke the sound barrier. Now I know its not permitted but there have been incidents where the pilot did not intentionally break the sound barrier at an airshow but it happened anyway and they probably got into trouble for it. Anyways I was just making a point. Great video
@gangstor123 It was actually a Mini-boom which is happens because certain parts of the aircraft can experience supersonic airflow. The effect is known to be more pronounced when they turn going that speed.
lol. Funny how that woman covers her ears. Whenever I go to an air show, I always cover them too before the f 18 rips across the sky in front of me lol
Like it or not this pilot found the minimum mach speed for the day/alt. the condensation aft of the passing ac is making the mach shock wave visible to the eye and the aircraft is in front of the mach shockwave.
i agree that the cloud is not an indicator of breaking the sound barrier ,and that at high transonic speeds close to mach 1 a soft thud can be heard but come on man listen to that CLAP ......that was breaking the sound barrier.
I was there, that wasnt a sonic boom. just because there is a vapor cone around the jet doesnt mean there was a sonic boom it can happen at high speeds (close to breaking the sound barrier) but there much be a good amount of water vapor in the air. (like it awlays is on long island in the summer) it was a good show no doubt one of the best at joans beach.
Yeah I too agree he got right on mach 1. The cone he has looks way more like a mach 1 cone, and not just average vapor. Plus there's a POP as he passes, while usually it's just a loud thunder.
I have to say that I think he DID break it. I am usually the king of skeptics when it comes to reports of booms at airshows, but to those skeptics I would say you have to pause this video right around 3.75-4 seconds. At that point you can clearly see a SHOCKWAVE surpassing any form of Prandtl-Glauert singularity I have ever seen. The proximity of the aircraft to the beach would result in a crack rather than the more familiar boom or double boom of a plane going supersonic in the distance.
@CLK15 no he did not break the sound barrier. i was at that airshow and the announcer said that if he did break the sound barrier he would have shattered all the windows on the cars in the parking lot
@fblova1017 talk of ear drums bleeding and shattered glass everywhere makes for colorful announcing.......again I urge the skeptics to pause this video between 3.75-4 seconds, a shockwave clearly exists that is well beyond the normal display of Prandtl-Glauert singularity especially on a blue sky day........not to mention the audible crack.........sorry for the lack of punctuation and proper grammar, I'm tired its late........3.75-4 seconds, i rest my case.
@CLK15 although there is a clear visual of the shockwave does not mean he did break the sound barrier. he came close to it and by the way it is against air force and navy regulations to break the sound barrier at airshows.
The girl grabbing her ears is priceless...there was no Boom. I was there...but that was freakin cool from where you were standing. Can't wait for Memorial Day Weekend! 4 more months!
i have a vid of this too! it was awesome! i was telling my friend about sonic booms and it happened! it was great! i have the video from behind tho :-) u can watch if you want
well the sound that he made that sounded like an explosion was said to be breaking the sound barrier in the news the next day, were you there at the show and heard it, it knocked people on thier asses as you see me in the video, maybe it wasnt but sure sounded like it and I looked it up on the internet and all of the pictures of planes breaking the sound barriers looked like the cone shape that this onemade with the condensation
He did not break the sound barrier, he pushed that bird to the limit. It is against all laws and military regulations to break the sound barrier at public air shows. Yet this pilot gave us a awesome fly by. Great footage.
@chunkthis Lol no its not retard, they do it all the fucking time at air shows, just not at low altitude.
Regardless of what anyone's "cousin who is in the airforce/marines/navy" tells you, its not dangerous to people at all, unless it was about 10 feet from you, and even then it would just rupture an ear drum, if that.
Sick

in order to make a vapor cone you have to be moving at a certain speed with certain humidity, this speed is below the speed of sound

I'm gonna offer a simple reason as to why he didn't break the sound barrier.
You can hear him coming.
There. All of you can stop bitching at each other now!!
PrivateCustard 1 month ago
Think that was a sonic boom, the speed of sound is not a constant and changes with temperature! Sometimes even the best make mistakes!

So an airplane can break the sound barrier. Big deal. A chuck Norris roundhouse has broken the time/space barrier

Not impressive. I seen Chuck Norris break the sound barrier with his fist.
