  • Wilt was the best defender against the sky hook

    -Don Rubix

  • technically, wilt did block it, but back then it wasnt recorded as an official stat, but like i said, he did block it. hakeem did block kareem, but it was on a lay-up attempt. as for the skyhook, i love the shot. i led my team to a win after being down 10, and i did it by making 5 skyhooks in a row. its impossible to stop.

  • Im 5'11 and use the hook shot what makes it hard to block is the fact your body is practiclly side ways when you shoot it creating to much space between you and the defender...its funny how no one even bothered to do it...imagine the hook shot being the real shot and the jumper being secondary

  • I wear high tops, I shoot skyhooks, it will have it's Reniassance Kareem, I got you.

  • Best.Center.Ever

  • tim duncan hook shots is good

  • MIlwaukee Kareem and Lakers Kareem loooks like two completely different people

  • Wilt Chamberlain has blocked his sky hook two times in a row

  • I love skyhook whenever I go to the court I get frustrated when my shots aren't falling then I skyhook when it swishes I forget the frustration

  • Yeah seriously, how come these idiot big guys nowadays think the sky hook is gay?

Who cares if it looks gay. It works. It is smooth, finesse, and nearly impossible to block.

If I was 7 feet tall, that's all I'd be doing on the court.

  • @bim2x4 I'm 5'3.5" PG, but I use this a fair bit along with a running cross-floater.

  • @bim2x4 Nothing looks gay when it goes in.

  • @TommyKimball7788 ONE of the? How about THE best.

  • Javale McGee is developing a pretty nasty sky hook himself.

  • Bill Russell can block him ):

  • /watch?v=IYq4CWeWaKg Proof of Wilt Chamberlains ability to block this shot, from Kareems left hand, then right hand, 1 on 1 TWICE in 10 seconds without ANY weakside help or sneaking up on it. Kareem is 25, Wilt is 35. Any questions? In the playoffs of '72 Wilt blocked it 7 or 8 times in ONE game, and had over twenty skyhook blocks by the end of the playoff run. I have incredible RESPECT for Kareems unblockable hook, but Chamberlain is a freak, he made the SKYHOOK look as blockable as a layup!

  • @GarchompNation just a joke refering to people who don't like basketball (i saw somewhere that cricket fans don't like basketball :))

  • i noe dirks is a top 3 unstoppable shot in nba history but kareem scored most of his 30,000 points(i noe he has 38,000 but not every FG was a hook shot) were by his skyhook, tats a lot of points with one move, its still the most unstoppable ever

  • 3 point skyhook?

  • @TheLuxuriousHD It's not unblockable . Wilt Chamberlain blocked it ocasionally when he was at the end of his career and couldnt jump as high as he could when he was younger . This is the link how high Wilt could really jump when he was younger /watch?v=tCtmgxwsiJY . If they met both in their prime Wilt would block almoust every single Jabbars sky hook .

  • anyone else noticed that Kareem has played with 2 of the greatest point guards ever?!

  • almost all great players have number 3 on their jursey.wade-3,jordan-23,kareem jabbar-33......(:

  • @ssdinc41

    Bird, Reggie, Magic.

  • Kareem's skyhook wasnt unblockable .

  • @garioldwin No doubt it was blockable but hard as hell to time it perfectly. The body control and finesse was beautiful to watch and lethal. Kareem was hell of efficient shooting a career 56 pct from the field and unlike Shaq who had no range the Kareem's Skyhook was useful up to 18 ft.

  • only kareem can say : wilt...yeah he was good xD

  • Best type of shot, its easy and near impossible to block when performed correctly

  • This shot is lethal if you can shoot it well. Im trying to incorporate it into my game i find it easier to shot than my jumper!!!

  • wonder why players these days don't use this move anymore..

I guess it doesn't look 'badass' enough for the highlight generation anymore.

  • @masonkim7 the one who comes closest to using it today is Tim Duncan with his jump hook...does it by driving from the low block into the lane much like Kareem did, but not nearly as automatic as Kareem's skyhook

  • Wilt Chamberlain did block the sky hook, twice in a row: watch?v=FDpyRptzacw

  • @jp3813 didnt hakeem block his shot too?

  • @AngelBattalion Can't remember, but Wilt did it twice in a row.

  • @jp3813 but kareem scored at least other 1000 skyhook over him

  • @MsLUCATONI9 And???

  • @jp3813

impressive, but that has to be the only recorder instance of it ever being blocked. think about it, 38,000 points...blocked twice

  • @Veyronp87 Several people here are claiming that Hakeem also blocked it. Such available footage is rare especially during Kareem's time. So who knows who else did it.

  • is hookshot really that hard for others? i mean for me its really much more easier than lay ups

  • @ivandayao400 Kareem's skyhook is different. a seven footer who can raise his towering half of his wingspan with only his wrist flipping the ball to the basket-No acceleration needed- His left creating the perfect space. Think about this.. his opponent knows what he is going to do... but let's just say to be modest. he has like 1/100 chance of blocking it. The hookshot you meant obviously uses your upperbody and arms mostly to power your shot. Both need the legs, but in the SH.. KAJ just tiptoe

  • The only person I have EVER seen block Kareem's sky hook was Wayne Cooper.

  • @shawn415 and wilt chamberlain

  • Although the sky hook is a dangerous weapon, Kareem has a bit of selective memory. He recalls nobody blocking his shot? Really?

Hasn't an "out of his prime" Wilt Chamberlain and a "hasn't reached his prime" Hakeem Olajuwon blocked the sky hook?

  • @TheCynicLives Ive never seen hakeem do it, do you have video? But i have seen wilt do it...very selective memory

  • @TheCynicLives i agree mate. I saw even dennis rodman blocked him from behind helping bill laimbeer.

  • @TheCynicLives If you didn't know, Kareem is REALLY cocky. Just like how a couple months ago, he said he deserves a statue in front of the Lakers stadium more than Wilt does. Yeah, he has his head up his ass. Does he deserve a statue? In all honesty, yes. But you don't tell the whole world like it's owed to you.

  • @swaguymusicpage Yeah, I respect the legend of Kareem and what he's done for both the Lakers and for himself in terms of making history. But the man himself? Not really a fan.

  • @TheCynicLives your 100% right they blocked it. but were they guarding him? when hakeem did it, he came out of no where

  • His training with Bruce Lee gave him his extra agility.

  • i am here bc of the dark knight. :/

  • Search on youtube search box '' Manute Bol Mix '' you should see there manute blocking kareem at 0:45 you should see it ..

  • @MrHorseback

Thanks for posting that and yes, the shot was blocked but in that video, it was goal tending.

If you notice, after the shot was blocked and the loose ball was recovered, the guy with the ball just sorta stopped because the ref had blowed the whistle.

  • @darthba11er OK now i get it ... that video is kinda blur :D yeah, i'm thinking too that it was a goal tending !

  • Btw Only manute bol can block the skyhook .manute already did that!

  • Brittney Griner, if you are watching this. Take note. If you get some semblance of Kareem's hook, nobody can stop you in College and the WNBA.

  • in one of the meetings between kareem and wilt wilt who was old and past his prime blocked kareem 8 times in the same game...

  • Kevin durant will pass him

  • @CurtisBrodigan17

    Not before Kobe Bryant

  • how come jermaine o neal does not use the hook shot?

  • @BakaDemi cuz hes not 7 feet tall or long

  • @TheOriginalGotMalc he's close, listed as 6'11 center. i just find it funny that he's talking how nobody uses it, and how great it is, yet he doesn't use it.

  • nobody can stop the sky hook

  • blocked twice out of how many times he did the skyhook

  • @tarik292 lol twice in a row for one thing...not to much footage from the era so who know how many more times it happened...im sure wilt blocked it more then those 2 times...and you have to consider, he was what? 35?

  • Wtf are they talking about? Hakeem the Dream blocked Kareem

  • 0:20 kareem was throwing that sky hook from everywhere on people, FUCK THE FREE THROW LINE! LOOOL

  • @3:28 He says not recalling being blocked by someone who is guarding him? There is that famous video where Chamberlain does it twice in a row -_-

  • Comment removed

  • look at the small ref @3:47 :) haha

  • In Manute Bol's first game of his career, he blocked Jabbar's sky hook twice.

  • @dvio360 so?

  • ok take kareem off centre and hes bombing everyone with three points like hes throwing himself into a hula hoop ......put kareem out of centre and the n.b.a will retire him..coz those skyhooks will put you in a sanitarium>>

if he was that much flashy hed be out of centre throwing skyhooks from the 3 point line>

how can he skyhook running either side

with either hand fades away the skyhook ?????.and from the foul line at the samee time waaaat?

    .im seriouse daammm that guy

  • dirk nowitzki is the next man to be known as his one legged fade away shot

  • @schecterguitarsfan guess what kobe is working on that one legged fade

  • The only eay to stop that shot is with a help defense. I can totally see howard or james throwing the ball to the back row. But its still very strong skill to have for a centre n this deinitely mastered it.

  • if Yao developed this shot, he would have been lethal and maybe just maybe have a ring by now

  • The only way to possibly stop that shot is to strip him when he brings it down right before he elevates and pulls it up. Otherwise, it's unstoppable. The defender would have to be 10 feet tall and lean in on him for every-step. Even then, he pulls it all the way back and flips it with his wrist at the peak of his jump. There's too much distance for anyone to even contest it...

  • im just imagining a 6 foot 5th grader with a sky hook. damn

  • unmatched elegance.

  • Wilt did block it on numerous occasions... However that didn't stop it in the grander scheme of things, as Kareem was still putting up 30 on him.

  • @vhfanjack wilt got it one time, after that kareem made adjustment and wilt never touched again

  • @whoswatchingyou He got it twice actually

  • @vhfanjack True but Wilt was blocking more shots and grabbing more rebounds, and Wilt at that stage in his career was shooting 7-10 shots per game. The 72 Lakers won the title and beat the Bucks with Wilt averaging 14-15 points per game. I bet Kareems shooting pct was way down against Wilt. If you take 30- 40 shots, you will score 30. Kareem lies in this clip, by stating no one blocked it? They were the 2 best centers of all-time.

  • 2:20 saumel L jackson haha!

  • @CrazYMadarfakaR

Don't get it, what does the Sky Hook have to do with Cricket?

  • This guy is way better than JORDAN. THATS THE TRUTH.

  • it is truely a lost art, and I can't understand why no one tries to master it... it's such an impossible shot to block by the guy who is guarding...

  • Is that the only move he know??

  • @YJohnstar With that MOVE he made 39.000 points DUDE...

  • @YJohnstar that move gave him 6 MVP awards, 19 all-star appearances, 6 Championship Rings, 2 Finals MVPs. it was also his ticket to the Hall of Fame.

  • @YJohnstar No, but it was his bread-and-butter move.

  • The skyhook in a incredible shot. You don`t see it anymore which is a shame but, I don`t think it`s because guys don`t know how or don`t want to learn how I think there`s two reasons why nobody does it. Number one is because most ball players today want to be marked for individuals for there skills which is cool, but they`re shooting straight and that`s what everybody does. Next since the sky hook was patented by Kareem and the respect for him and the shot is so high they don`t dare break it.

  • There needs to be a Kareem "Skyhook" statue. It was absolutely unstoppable.

  • @michaeljamesmccabe NBA Hoopz just cheesed the heck out of that move. I used it a lot.

  • A statue of him doing his trademarked Sky Hook will be so cool

  • give the bitch a statue....fucking sisssyit was sickening listen to a grown man complain about not getting a statue......pussy

  • @alphamaleman7 He deserved it. How does a man win 6 NBA titles, 6 MVPs, 3 NCAA Championships, 3 State Championships, And score more points than ANYONE (Wilt, MJ, etc.) and NOT get a statue?? I'm ashamed he even has to "complain" about getting one. If anyone deserves it, its him and Bill Russell. Even before MJ. So shut up and show this man some respect. He damn sure has earned it.

  • thx a lot 4 posting this video, love kareem.

  • I wonder if anyone agrees with me when I say if any random 7 footer mastered the sky hook they'd be a perennial all star even if they sucked on defense!

  • @gmf20002 I'm thinking that Dwight Howard needs to spend some time with Kareem this summer. Last year he spent some time with Hakeem, and it improved his post play (Kobe also learned from Hakeem). If Howard learns the sky hook he would be able to spread the floor and setup his teammates for easy baskets. BTW I agree with you!

  • i mean you simply CANNOT stop it. PERIOD.

  • when did jermaine o'neal play for the heat?

  • and too al people who say that dwight could defend his shot. kareem is bigger then dwight. do you realize how much that means with hook shot ? especially with his hand. dwight couldnt jump as high, and listen to kareem, it is hard to know when to jump at all, second 2:32, i think this is chamberlain against him. now put howard there and tell me how he would do it. its imposssible !

  • and because wilt once in his career bloicked this shot, it was defendable ? its second nature to him, i cant belive people saying howard would eat him. it was unstopable, and is unstopable. i dont know why other 7 footers dont develop it.. because they dont know how ?

  • Pau Gasol Needs to learn this!!!!!!

  • @YGoMastaTrades When? hes 31

  • Ah, the shot I do when I'm playing basketball for fun only lol.

Is it weird to do this in an official match even though I'm only 5'8 tall?

  • All thanks to Bruce Lee's philosophy........

  • Comment removed

  • What Bill Cartwright said........

  • If Kareem played in this era, he would be a power forward

  • @z3idd He may be tall, but he was not as heavy.

  • @BrentWoodSean38

He's 7'1,he would play at center.

  • @adimitrije2 Dirk, Gasol & Duncan are 7 footers, and they play the 4 exclusively, so the height doesn't change my point. Kareem in his prime was a bit smaller compared to some of the centers over the past 10-15 years, 225 from what I have read, which is the average size of a small forward these days, so I think the 4 would of have been best suited for him, he couldn't handle the bigger centers from a physical standpoint

  • @BrentWoodSean38 Those guys play the 4, but the truth is within the context of the offenses they play, they're really centers, well Duncan and Gasol are. Your typical 4 guys are swing men. Those guys are power forwards in name only.

  • @adimitrije2

Yes you are correct. But the other bigger centers couldn't handle him either.

  • dis guy is a legend and i would pay lebron, dwayne wayde and whoever else 1 dollar to not only master the skyhook but know how to block it btw 1 dollar is all i have

  • He still looks young!

  • That's y magic has aids

  • Even tho I believe MJ is the greatest ever, I respect Kareem! But saying nobody ever blocked the skyhook is a damn lie! I saw a clip of Wilt Chamberlain blocking it back when KAJ played on the Bucks, so don't try to bullshit people!

  • @Bionickle he said he coundt recall he didnt say never give the old man a chance

  • Kentucky is getting Kyle Wiltjer next year, he's got an amazing sky hook. Although nowhere near as effective as Kareem's, it will go down. The sky hook lives, baby!

  • lol magic slapped kareems ass at the end

  • unblockable, but its a hard as shot to perfect.

  • Goose Tatum

  • Say what you want , to me he is the greatest basketball player of all time . the grace , the beauty , the moves and of course the sky hook . He was in a league of his own .

  • long ass arms

  • I love the hook shot and try to incorporate it in my game. I am only 5'9 and can shoot it over people who are 6'4. It really does wonders for me. I love the sky hook!

  • @AbdullahAl18 I agree.I love this shot too... I'm only 5'8 but I'm able to use it against taller guys, you just need to master it.

  • no one is using this right now. because of howard damn..

  • Sky Hook is an elegant yet amazingly dangerous shot. It looks so...harmless but if you try to block it 99% of the time you get called for goal-tending.

  • I hate comments about thumbs. Kareem is awesome.

  • i admire this shot so much since i was 8 now i could make that shot from the 3 point line lol :)

  • @

"I used it to become the leading scorer of the NBA, there must be something about it that works."

I don't see how that simple fact doesn't resonate with today's players.

  • everyone knows Justin Beiber but no one knows kareem abdul javarr WTF!

  • OMG! It's impressive. A brilliant career. A true Legend!

  • So basically the way the hook shot is setup that it can't be blocked or stopped LOLOL

  • @ElectricRocklee For the most part. There's a video of Wilt blocking two in a row

  • Kareem found a Crack in the system, The Unstoppable Shy Hook :)

  • Robertas Javtokas is doing THE SKY HOOK

  • People who dislike this had their heads sky hooked.

  • Sky Hook is the reason why KAJ is the leading scorer of all time. Sky Hook is unstoppable and almost impossible to block.

  • @winxki I believe you're losing yourself here. KAJ is the leading NBA scorer of all time. Not in the history of basketball. Oscar Schimidt is the top scorer of all time in the history of sport with over 46.000 points. His nickname was "Holy Hand" and was the best 3-point shooter of all time. I believe he achieved 90% success rate in 3-point shooting.

Anyway... KAJ is NBA leading scorer. Just to keep it clear.

  • @Taikamya

He did score nearly 50 thousand points, but 90% from 3? Who do you think you're kidding? I mean his career is pretty remarkable, scoring-wise, even in Brazilian and Italian leagues, but that 90% demands sources. The best shooters in the world (not just the NBA) can barely make 90% in practice.

  • Cap is THE best basketball player to ever live. high school, NCAA, NBA...no one was/is better.

  • @punkrockguilt1 cap?

  • @punkrockguilt1 AGrred

  • what is the difference between a jump hook and a sky hook?

  • @Ezza232499 Jump hook is when you shoot a hook shot while jumping.

Sky hook is the nickname given by announcers to the hook shot while standing flat on the ground.

  • @TheFearedDefecation man your definition was off. Jump hook is when both your feet are on the ground and you go for the jump. Sky hook is just using one foot to take off, like a drive. Jump hook is more stable and easier to execute/master. Sky hook makes for a longer/higher release making more difficult to block; or, as in the case of Kareem, simply impossible. Sky hook is more difficult because it is a pivot movement.

  • no wonder he's the all time leading scorer!

  • it's sad to say but the skyhook move is dead now, no one in the league does it any more :(

  • @GoatAirJordanFTW Thanks for summing up what we all just saw, dipshit..

  • @GoatAirJordanFTW I think they wana do it, it's juz it's too hard....

  • @the99drill:

He used his left handed hook in close. The problem is that the highlights that you see here on YouTube don't have it, but he used the left handed hook against the Pistons in the 87-88 season when the Lakers repeated as champions. He scored all over Bil Laimbeer with it.

  • Ive SEEN videos of wilt chamberlain past his prime blocking this shot so idk what Kareem was talking about...and it was pretty obvious wilt was the guarding him, he didn't come from no where. As much as I love Kareem, wilt in his prime would run circles around him. Wilt past his prime, and PURPOSELY not scoring as much to be an all around team player, always matched up with him and basically always beat him in rebounds and blocked shots. (not dissing kareem)

  • Hey could someone explain to me the difference between a jump hook and the sky hook?

  • @randomaznpopper Nothing buddy its just how Kareem did it. Eddie Doucette, coined the fraze. It is still a hook shot. But Kareem at 7'2 the way he shot at its arch it was10 feet 2 inchs from where he released it. Like it was coming from the Sky. To block it you needed perfect timing to soon you miss to late its already gone. Big guys should learn. Kareems Sky Hook, Hakeems Dream Shake, Parish Rainbow Jump Shot and O'Neals power shuffle. A well rounded player at the Centers position.

  • @the99drill Hakeem Olajuwon blocked it too. I think there's a video on Youtube of that...

  • 5:16 "Billy Cunningham" i wouldn't trust him..

  • I use the sky hook when I play basketball and I didn't know scoring on someone who's 4 inches taller in the paint was that simple

  • best shot ever, the fade away is never eliable, players just wants to make the shot look difficult in case they miss.

  • Kareem was my hero when I was a kid. Truth is not many copied his skyhook back then either. Sure, Bill Walton had a nice jump hook and Kevin McHale would occasionally shoot a hook but still it just wasn't the same. Around 1980 I started taping those late night 'TAPE DELAYED' Lakers playoff games and would spend hours and hours shooting a skyhook until it became second nature. *Anybody can do it. Kareem was the real thing. Simply study his move.

    *not a guarantee you'll be a Hall-Of Famer

  • @libertatus Did you learn how to hit it from the free throw line? I want to learn how to do it away from the basket.

  • Wilt had 31,419, after Kareem made that shot how is it 31,422 if he's "1 point shy" wouldn't he be at 31,420 because 31,418 + 2? or did they add that in after the game was done.

  • now i'm not bragging but i can score the sky hook pretty often.n i think its one of my best achievements of my lifetime all thanks to Kareem!! n i'm just 18!! yipee!! ^_^!! although i'm short(5'8").....but i can shoot it off for 3 points..

  • now i'm not bragging but i can score the sky hook pretty often.n i think its one of my best achievements of my lifetime all thanks to Kareem!! n i'm just 18!! yipee!! ^_^!!

  • Kareem was an alltime great and a great role model. He doesn't get nearly enough credit anymore, but I don't imagine he gets too worked up over other people's opinions.
