  • Did you see how sad bobby got when they solo'd Jerry's lyrics? :( I hope youre sleeping sweetly jer bear

  • @SoulSHINEgroovy That wasn't Jerry's voice man it was Bobby. I don't think he was sad i think he just didn't want to hear his own voice. =)

  • What a *BEAUTIFUL* human being...look man...he's got some just plain clothes...on...no BS chaos...those clowns wear today....just so BEAUTIFUL...like their music....

  • Dont like the noise cancelling mics...it cuts to much great tone...go bobby go!!! (~):}

  • Was there a real girl who was the inspiration for this song?

  • where can i watch this whole thing?

  • Check out youtube videos that feature any other band and you will find vitriolic comments and stupid arguments. As I write this nobody disliked the video. Deadheads don't make mean comments and others don't usually view GD youtube videos, What really wonderful state of affairs. Story of Sugar Mag was very interesting and like all dead stuff way to short. GD songs that last 45 minutes are way to short as were 6 + hour concerts. seemed like hours passed in seconds when at a Dead show.

  • @verbenco - Beautifully said and completely true. Thank you for saying so. I saw them live and in concert 25 times from 1975-1979. Now, at age 56, these are the happiest memories of my life. For the remainder of my days, I'm with them, with you and with all people who love peace, beauty and joy. They were the best garage band ever ... best live band ever ... best experience ever. They became professional musicians by accident. It was all about joy, love and life. A touch of Heaven!

  • Great message at the end there I love it. Please tell that message to the world. The american dream is about drive and motivation not about money!

  • TOO GOOD

  • @acidinurmind thank you for posting this

  • what they did live was so good that it should have been illegal.

  • So my oldest brother put this on for me then he put on a live dead show to show me the diff and been hooked ever since ! Tx bro !

  • my favorite too! the day i finally learned to play it... oh man i was on cloud nine.

  • this is my favorite dead song.... i love it man! :D it makes me oh soooo happy(:

  • Music that changed lives..................changed mine for the better! Thank you boys!

  • bob seems kinda shy about his singing

  • @nbass88 I dont blame him lol

  • 3:45, gotta love dead girls...

  • "the grateful dead are not just a band, theyre an environment"

  • What a fun band to listen to......that's the essence of it......

  • Cool! Thanks for posting.....funny to watch Bobby playing in the studio! Never knew he was dyslexic......

  • really cool watching them play with the tracks. i love when the guy puts on the vocal track only. bob just kind of laughs. too bad they didn't show a later version, that was some thunder

  • Re "questionable intonation", Bobby is basically saying that he's out of tune.

  • @bhollin He is referring to the guitar not being entirely in tune. Handling intonation can be quite tricky!

  • Question to rhythm guitarists out there: at 1:09 Bob laughs and says "questionable intonation." Why? It doesn't sound like he made a mistake, does it?

  • @Lisica2008 In the words of Bill Graham, "They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do"

  • Priceless. Classic Weir in his humility in this all-time legendary song.

  • You can see at several times bobby almost breaks down when the memories come back during the playback.

  • Bobby, shave your face, you look so much better!!

  • I want to say one more thing on this, being a pedal steel player myself, I love the way Jerry plays pedal steel. He's got so much soul, but as I listen to Bob, and the engineer "playing different mixes" of this, I realize that it's "the whole band" that really makes this song go. It's a great song, but without all the players in it, it wouldn't be the same. Sounds like a team effort to me!!! Marc Trainor.

  • very good comment,ur right its the whole band at hand to do it,there the beatles on the road, and the stone's with out rock!Al i goT to say is dam this sure is the way,TO DESRICBE THE U.S.A.DREAM with OUT ALL THE B.S.ALL.OF BRAND NAME'S!!!!

  • What a wonderful "tour" into the recording and propagation "if you will" of this great song by the Dead. So nice to see and hear Bob Weir and the engineer talk about the making and recording of this terriffic song. Marc Trainor.

  • Weir is one handsome guy... oh yeah, and a stellar guitar player...

  • this must've been very emotional for bob

you can see this when just the vocals were played back

  • who is the other person that bobby is talkin to here, and what is his credentials?

  • John Cutler, the Soundman after Dan Healey, also involved in the remaster of the American Beauty Album

  • I love the version from europe 72

  • As the music moves through us, it never stops. A lingering sweet sadness at the view of that sunset. Winterland.

  • does any one know what show this video is from

  • classic albums, it a sweet show

  • The show that's featured is The Grateful Dead Movie/filmed at Winterland in 74. I forget the exact dates of that run.. but it was multiple nights just before the hiatus.

  • It was five nights in October 74. I think the clip of Sugar Mag is from October 17th. There was a point where I first got all five nights on bootlegs and sat down and figured out where pretty much everything in the movie was from. For what it's worth, the Sunshine Daydream that's in the movie is from the 19th, I think. I do recall that it's from a different night from the main body of the song. For whatever reason, I guess Jerry and Susan decided to switch to a different night at that point.

  • gd movie

  • i didnt know bob was dislexic

  • Sunshine Daydream! That's what it's all about! Ernesto

  • Sunshine Daydream! And that's what it's all about! Ernesto
