PS @multimann2@1410commodor1949 Just to confuse the issue (and then clearing it up) There's a class of consonant sounds (see my last post) which are called approximants. They are [w] wet [r] right [j] yellow (Using International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols) They are halfway between a consonant sound and a vowel sound. The first sound of yellow and the 'y' in fly often trip new readers up. If you are interested this is called PHONETICS, it's a branch of linguistics. Again great questions.
@multimann2@1410commodor1949 Answering your question about "y". The confusion comes about because actually this cute song isn't fully correct. Linguists define a consonant as a SOUND that is produced with an obstruction or blockage of the air in the mouth. Vowels SOUNDS on the other hand are produced by air not being blocked. So while we usually use AEIOU to represent these open sounds, as you've pointed out, it isn't always true. This song is good for 'word attack' skills, hope that helps.
@12Foofoo12 because it starts with a vowel that SOUNDS like a consonant in this case, even though it technically starts with a vowel. "Umbrella" starts with a vowel sound (short u) but "unicorn" starts with a consonant sound (yoo), so you'd say "an umbrella" and "a unicorn."
cant wait to teach this tomorrow to my first grade class. i made some changes because we are only ready for the short sounds but will then use the long sounds later.....love it!
thats very cute i love it :) its catchy

Hey, what about vowel "Y"? Or is it a consonant? You are misleading the audience. What is Y in the following words?
lYnx, zYnc, xYlophone, gYm, sphYnx, chrYsalis, bY, NYack, SYdneY, tYpe, whY, crY,

@1410commodor1949
Y letter, as far as I believe to know, is considered a semi-vowel
Why it's considered so? Well, you better ask a professor
:)

This has been bugging the hell out of me lately and i dont know why.. But does anyone know a persons name without any vowels in it..?

for a word that starts with a vowel (A E I O U) how come you aren't supposed to say AN Ukulele ?
