I rI havent seen the film yet but Obree was the best him and boardman were the best brit and world cyclist at time.. cycling was huge back then I mean massive and obree to do what he did on hour record was amazing..I dont know if it says it in film but he kept waking himself up through night when going for hour rec again over night.. by drinking letres of water and waking up ev 2hours to massage legs so not stiff in m orn.. I rember all mags back then.. incredible stories how he trained
You all miss the point, read the UCI rules, the record is split into two sections, normal bikes like mosers, and streamlined bikes. And that is only fair, but all partisipants are pushing the boundaries, no one can doubt Obrees talent, guts, and sheer determination, be happy that the record, even now, is in the united kingdom.
Watched the movie last night on BBC. Don't really know how true the film is, seems somewhat exaggerated at times but you can't deny the real Obree determination and ingenuity.
I was was kind of sad to learn he didn't like Mike Burrows' bike though, as Burrows would later design my bike, a Giant MCR.
As far as I know the film was pretty much true to life, aside from Hein Verbruggen's name being changed, and the bit about the '94 Worlds where Graeme crashes in the film. In reality Verbruggen stepped out onto the track and physically stopped him from riding!
I just watched The Flying Scotsman ,movie about Obree tonite.Boy,I was in tears to see how his life was such a mixed with joy and sadness.
He beats all the odds by doing something good, cycling. God bless him and his family.Don't care if he is a bipolar or not, that's a part of life when someone has a bad childhood like him.
In my opinion cycling records such as the 1 hour, should be about both the improvements in the rider's strength, as well as improvements with technology and rider positioning. Obree is a hero, who looked for ways to improve performance in the sport. If he found a position that he could beat Moser with, then good on him.
well, only problems with your claim about Moser is that Moser doped (blood boosting). that's a huge fail right there. and, Moser did his Record in Mexico City, at altitude. reduced air density at altitude makes for a faster ride, even though power output is lower due to less oxygen. Altitude gives the fastest Records, period. if Moser did his Record at Bordeaux and not doped, he would have come up way short on any bike. also, there's not one person out there who says Obree ever doped.
Obree didnt use big money but his position on the bike WAS more aero and it was faster than what Moser used. If it was not he would have stood ZERO chance of beating Moser because Moser had a far higher average power output than Obree IMO.
u realize u completly refuted your statement by saying IMO?
if its your opinion it doesnt actually mean anything, also its not just average power output, nor did u state the length of time which he has a higher average output, nor was cadence or VO2 max taken into account by what you said moser had a higher power output, which may be true but doesnt mean hes faster over an hour. look at the numbers, after an hour obree had a farther distance
Obree is/still is a pure champion, did things his way from scraps against all odds...competing against big money teams/riders and still kicked their ass. it's about basics, motivation & effort first, not money, computers, or wind tunnels. pure class with Phil Liggett commenting, nobody can fill Liggett's shoes. or Obree's.
1993? thats the year i was born. i just watch The Flying Scotsman on tv and pretty inspired by it. super duper great movie. i really really want a bike right now. hahahah
Graeme Obree. Totally unconventional, totally committed, total genius. When he won the 50 mile tt many years ago he took 6 minutes out of stuart Dangerfield who was very very quick. He just has that extra gear that the rest of us have always searched for!!! Met him once, got his autograph, great fella!
he is pure genius to do that ! part of it was made out of a washing machine and the specialized wheels he had, my dad gave them to him . please do the record again graeme !
Graeme came from out of nowhere, did what everyone said he could not do. He had the passion and the ability.
If you have not tried it. This type of a ride is science today. I ride at heart rate of 176, at 177 I fall into oxygen debt, Ideally this hour is spent on that line. Afterwards you want a meal and 10 hours of sleep. He did this 2 days running! I tip my hat to anyone that will do it 2 days running and set a record on the latter try. Mercks said the hour record took 3 years off his life.
1) 'digitalme2' talks absolute s#@t, Obree is an unbelievably talanted athlete who thoroughly deserved the hour record, which is even more astounding considering the phsycological illness he suffers from. Merckx used the latest, available technology at the time so why are you suggesting Obree's achievements are not as credible just because he made is own bike you fu@#?ng c$&k.
2) Are you (fignon) the same Fignon that won the Tour de France in 1983 & 1984?
everyone should read the title 'controversy' under hein verbruggens wiki page. it shows hes completely corrupt

Just imagine if he didn't have to fight alcoholism, depression and smoking, he would have made an unbeatable record for sure.

TheBussy88 2 years ago 2
Well there are 2 for that reason.... one of them allows anything, the other is very restrictive and is only based on the strength.
I think this is a good middle ground, and the UCI one gives a good base on just the human itself.

graemes book is inspiring, made me laugh and cry. Only raised my expectations of what is a truely GREAT cyclist and under-rated genius.
never mind the Merckxx comparisions, understand the man and how he got to that and it really is awe inspiring... lorlucan17, completely agree!
