But how cleverly he observes Panditji and manages to resume Jahptaal. This is why he is USTAD ZAKIR HUSSAIN! Apart from tabla, he has immense smartness, creativity and imagination in his character.
And Panditji. Bravo! I believe that you are the best perfactionist of LAYKARI amongst all the Musicians.
When he comes on SAM after Chakradhar Tihai at 1:14, from 1:16 he almost starts to play Rupak. Then suddenly he realises and observe pandit ji's Bandish from 1:18 and then resume Jahptaal.
1.2.3.4.5.6.7 --- 1.2.3.4.5.6.7 --- 1.2.3.4.5.6.7 --- 1. 21 beats, Three rupaks, now 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10 --- 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10 --- 1. 20 beats of jhaptal plust 1. mathematically it fits perfectly. I copied this from Ustad Tari Khan. He improvised this.
True -- thats a standard variation. But Zakir is not doing that. He has taken 5 beats and divided them by 7 to create rupak. He plays the rupak 6 times in the same time as it would take to play jhaptal 3 times. Masterful!
@vishnu4utube Just wondering, if u have dhi na dhidhi na ti na dhidhi na (So join the two Dhi's up to make 8 beat kherva). I gave it a go to see how it sounds.
yeye... its just common... soemtimes wot u do while playing tabla is like combine beats e.g. 6 into 4 and 6 into 7 and here he has just done 7 into 10 when we thought he was playing rupak...
No, it is in fact jhaptaal. But he is sucha maestro that he can fit to cycles of rupak taal in one cycle of jhaptaal. Ustad Tari Khan does the exact opposite in one of his Youtube videos. Watch that, it is amazing!

Roopak is 7/8 beat cycle
Basic Jhaptaal 10/8 beat cycle what I have learned is:
1) din-na-dhin-dhin-na-tin-na-dhin-dhin-na
2) dhin-na-dhin-dhin-nana-tin-na-dhin-dhin-nana

5) tin-tin-naS dhindhin-nana-dhindhin-nana

thats jhaptaal, but Ustad Ji plays Rupak taal in Jhapaal, like Ustad Tari Khan, but he plays Jhaptaal in Rupak Taal, sometimes in his solos
