@existtraiesc This is based off of Nordic mythology, I think. I think so (and I'm just going off of memory, I'm not even Nordic) because 'Fenrir' was a wolf beast of sorts, and his two sons aimed to catch the moon and son (and eventually do in some huge event called Ragnarök). But I don't know why Fenrir himself ate the sun, because Sköll (one of his sons) was the one who chased it.
@xxxanimepopxxx Your right about all this. I was about to say the same thing. Fenrir didn't eat the sun, Skoll did.. But aside from that the animation was amazing.
oh and another thing that happens in Ragnarok is that Valhalla burns down and they say that the when the snake that bit its tail around the huge tree lets go Ragnarok begins
Asleep for centuries between the roots of the tree Yggdrasil, the wolf Fenrir is awakened by the sun. Enraged, he frees himself from his bonds and climbs the tree. Having reached the summit, he attacks the sun, without realizing that behind him, a hero appears.
The other character is definitely Vidarr, son of Odin, god of vengeance and forests. After Fenrir swallows Odin, Vidarr will stomp with his boot the lower jaw of the wolf, grab the upper half with his hand and tear open the wolf's mouth, killing it in the process. If you look closely, you can even briefly see Vidarr's foot in the mouth of the wolf in the video.
Sun-eating Skalli and moon-eating Hati are inventions of Snorri Sturluson, the man who wrote one of the Eddas. It is probably due to his urge to categorize and organize the mythology that he split up the role of one wolf to three. Older versions of the story do indeed tell Hati and Skalli and Fenrir are one and the same (as well as Snorri's Garmr, yet another apocalyptical canine).
Fenrir never attempts to eat the sun...he's the father of Hati and Scoll. Hati, with the purpose of eating the moon, and Scoll, the sun. Learned this from school, runescape, and Wikipedia so stfu ppl XD.
I have always loved this particular work. Now that I'm going to work on my final project for the animation course, I need loads of inspirations. This one is the top on my list. Gotta love it because of the animation, art direction and the mythology approached. Unique.
@kylee8767 No, please. CN is filled with shit; if they go to CN their work would be unappreciated or mixed with all that crap. Better looking for somewhere else where to show their animations.
@Blitzscreamer Yes, Loki got four children that I know of.
Hel or Hela: The queen* (*Kind of) of the dead
Jörmungandr (Or as he would be called if his name was translated directly, the midgard snake): the giant serpent that is stretched out across the whole world, and biting its own tail.
Fenrir or The Fenris Wolf: the huge wolf that could only be chained by gleipnir, and to chain it, Tyr, - the brother of Thor - still had to let the wolf eat his hand.
I'm quiet confused with the fenrir eating sun...wasn't it was the other wolf doing that?
Oh oh!! Is that little guy fighting him was Vidar (Odin's strongest son next to Thor)? That's probably the most interesting and the best version of Vidar I'd ever seen! I mean he's a king of a forest that's true...
@flickersowner yes it was skoll the sun chaser and haki the moon chaser...i think this is skoll..fenrir is full dark black...the myth says that when fenrir gets loose from gleipnir(the rope),then this will the day that skoll and haki will caught and eat the sun and the moon...it will be the day of Ragnarok..the Doomsday...i still think this is Skoll...
@flickersowner in one of Gylfaginning chapters during Ragnarok,Fenrir wil devour Odin and Vidar will avenge him by stepping down with one foot on the lower jaw of the monster, grabbing his upper jaw in one hand and tearing his mouth apart, killing him and saving the wold and remake it....like the video..also Vidar is a silent god..as it shows so probably he will be...the wolf maybe comfused with Skoll...also at 0:08 there are "roots" not rope or chain....
@koulis0985: I think they're not completely mistaken. They're probably try to tell the story metaphorically. Odin was symbolized as a sun, since sometimes he was the god of summer, or life source. Vidar was more to a spirit of a forest, he also as the god of silence...I see the character was drawn without mouth. As the rope, I think they're more in touch with nature like, this Fenrir was tied with roots. Anyho, thanks for the info, it's been awesome :D
wow this is absolutely wonderfull, love the animation. though its a pity youve accidentaly used the names wrong, its Fenrirs son Skoll (sköll) that chases the sun, not Fenrir himself. and Hate that chases the moon.
Fenrir est un loup de la mythologie nordique, et l'Yggdrasil est un arbre il me semble... l'Arbre-Monde (merci Wiki), de la même mythologie.
Beau travail en tout cas. Je fais une prépa et je vais tenter le concours des Gobelins l'an prochain... donc je suis assez admirative (et un peu envieuse) devant les travaux réalisés par les élèves. yes, norse mythology... this wolf is actually Sköll, son of Fenrir (though Fenrir is some times used to refer to Fenrir himself and both his sons)... he eats the sun during Ragnarok.
@gwilendiel after ragnarök the end of the gods, after Fenrir has devoured odin, Víðarr hinn sterki (Vidarr the strong) one of the sons of odin, will avenge his fathers death, no one but him can stand up to Fenrir. so i take it that must be Vidarr at the end. but fenrir has no children, hes the bastard child of loki, and loki has many other bastards, including the ones that devour sun and day
@gwilendiel Late reply: You seem like someone who knows what he's talking about. Uhm.. What's Ragnarok? (A Japanese computer game, I know, but serious question now.)
@GaolisVideoLog In Norse mythology, Ragnarök (Old Norse "final destiny of the gods") is a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water.
@gwilendiel My bet would be the other character represents Odin's son Vidar, who was foretold to avenge his father's death slaying Fenrir who was foretold to have killed Odin during the events of Ragnorak. Granted it was actually Skoll who swallowed the sun, perhaps the artist chose to simplify things in this short animation by combining the roles Fenrir/Skoll roles. There do exist several popular (albeit inaccurate) interpretations where it was actually Fenrir who swallowed the Sun/Moon.
@gwilendiel Maybe Oden? Im not sure but the current shirt I am wearing has Oden fighting the Fenrir(It's Amon Amarth's shirt for 'A Beast I Am' from their C.D. Surtur Rising)
@gwilendiel I guess it's just based on nordic mythology, since this wasn't ragnarok, but a day and night cycle. Sköll was also supposed to be so tall that he could reach the sun standing on the ground
@gwilendiel They are: Fenrir, the mithology wolf, and then his two sons: Hati and Sköll. Hati searched for the moon, while Sköll searched for the sun. And in Ragnarok, they both completed their goals. Or something like that hehe:B
