I saw the movie when it was released in 85 and actually the best thing about it was this song. I think even then, I thought it had a slight Beatle sound....now I know why....The Finn brothers are huuuuuge Beatle fans (and having a Rutle in the mix probably doesn't hurt, either)
@sigmaman93 Well, seems like you're right, but it's interesting that the aesthetics is pretty much 1980 and during several years i was sure it was 1980,by the way Gretta Scacchi kicks some serious ass.
@peter455sd - Yeah, but I had to doubly check myself to make sure. It is '85 though.
Most of it sort of looks like 1985 to me, but bits do resemble 1980 I suppose. The guy at the mixer with glasses has a look of 1980 about him. Funny how 1980 can look different to 1985 but 2006 looks just like 2011.
Greta does kick ass, and good news, she's five years younger than you thought she was. lol
Actually that Bo Diddley signature beat WASN'T invented by Bo but was rather "borrowed" by Bo from traditional Indigenous music. It can be heard in the music from various indigenous peoples ranging from the African continent all the way to the Australian continent.
Well, if you want to assert it came from a Popular song then I'm more inclined to believe what Bo said, which was that he based it on his attempt to play "Jingle Jangle Jingle" which to my ear it sounds ALOT more like it than "Shave And A Haircut",lol. I wouldn't care if you tripled the speed, it still wouldn't sound like the Bo Diddley beat to my ear, lol.
It's just so ironic... When you watch the movie, you have to sit through at first about five minutes of legal disclaimers in which Coca Cola denys any and all connection with the film... And I think this must be the best Coke jingle I've ever heard. They must be kicking themselves!
Got that right. As soon as I saw that little mouse in his shoe...I knew this was going to be great....so many good things in this film....Eric is amazing in it. Big favorite along with The Tenth Victim,. and Intolerable Cruelty...
Thanks so much for posting this!! A wonderful moment in one of my favorite films both for the satire of the soft drink industry (and Eric Roberts was perfect casting!), and for the brilliance of having Tim Finn in it, and to have him write a truly fabulous jingle!!! Now that I know Tim's first name is Brian, I kinda wish his character had been named "Brian" instead of Philip!
there is a difference between fact and opinion and you thinking coke is better is your opinion, me liking pepsi more is mine...and i think your a little messed up because you spend your time finding strange videos on youtube and telling people that they don't deserve to drink a kind of soda...get real
Hey thanks so much for posting this--I loved the movie--I've looked for the soundtrack for years. On a lark I thought I would try you tube. What a catch. A gem of a jingle and a gem of movie. The imperiousness of empire and the subversions of sexuality. Not always so subtle but a wonderful romp nonetheless. Thanks!
This was a great movie - to this day it is one of the funkiest flicks I've ever had the pleasure to watch (along with Rikki & Pete). I forgot that Paul was on the drums in this clip!! I love the Finn Brothers. :)
Where is the soundtrack? I want it. Coca Cola Kid is a fun movie and Greta Scacchi it amazing- She's also great in the film The Player with Tim Robbins. Coca Cola Kid is a neglected movie. A re-make has potential. Julia's brother is also great in this film. Hana Hou!
Was that a very brief (& dark) close-up of Neil at around the 2:49 mark? Yeah, Tim's a Kiwi but went over to Australia as his success (first in Split Enz) grew. This clip isn't for a Coke ad! It's part of a great movie satirizing one of the biggest corporations to ever put a chokehold on the whole world. (I'm amazed that they got away w/ it!)
Far from it! One of my favorites as well. You might want to check out "Montenegro" by the same director. Set in Sweden so you'll have to deal with a couple of ABBA songs but well worth it.
Forgot to mention though, I guess Coke may not wanted to use the jingle since the movie itself doesnt show the company well, although, I don't think anyone could've taken the story seriously enough to boycott coca-cola. Also I wanted to mention, I read somewhere that one of the Finns was boyfriend to Greta Scacchi around the time this movie was made...lucky bastard. Thanks for the clip Darryl347
Greta Scacchi met Tim Finn during the making of this film and they dated until 1989. It was around the time they met that Tim decided to leave Split Enz and pursue a solo career (he had already done one sucessful solo effort). Some reports suggest Greata encouraged him to leave.
The answer is part right, yes Mr B.T Finn, known as Tim to one and all, dated Miss Scacchi, and yes, they did met on the set of The Coca Cola Kid.
I believe it was his previous girlfriend who consulted the i ching as to wether or not he should leave Split Enz. The rest as they say is History!!!!!!!!!
Easily one of my top 5 movies of all time. I have the DVD. This is a great scene too. The whole soundtrack is good. They never did release it on CD. I like "Its about as Australian as a barbwire canoe, shit sandwich". I would think Coke in Australia would've taken the jingle and maybe used it in a commercial, it truly does have an Australian Sound to it.
is it me or is it that Paul Hester on the drums?
