he was America's best....then, and now. Deserves a bigger role on the inside of US cycling, if he would consent to it. He's remarkably with it for being so pushed to the side by everyone as though he's from a different planet....and they try so hard to make him seem like he has some jealous grudge against Armstrong....noooo, he wants a level playing field, and cheaters caught and removed....sounds good to me.

vo2 max is not the only factor. Isn't Phinney labout 6.4 and 80 plus kgs? I'd say that's a pretty big reason why he won't won't win the Tour. There are guys around the 60kg mark who fly up the mountains. I don't care what his vo2 is, he's losing big time to the natural climbers. The time trial might split the first two or three some years, but the best climbers are the guys who fill the top spots on GC. Not the best pursuit specialists. Look at the physique of Contador and Schleck.

Cycling got so bad that we have the single recognizable household name in cycling, Lance. Who's a little Jealous? How many anti-doping controls do we need? Greg said "When Lance won the prologue to the 1999 Tour I was close to tears, but when I heard he was working with Michele Ferrari I was devastated. In the light of Lance's relationship with Ferrari, I just don't want to comment on this year's Tour. This is not sour grapes. I'm disappointed in Lance, that's all it is." So, no comment.

one can not deny that armstrong, with his big name, has done so much for cycling. That has to be something. he is the reason many got on their bicycles. I love greg lemond, and i feel the same way for lance. They are both equally great champions.

@jesuswouldkilhimself Your mistaken. LeMond focused on the Tour exclusively after his first win in 86. He road some races just for preparation the same as Armstrong did. Sean Kelly was the last of a great generation, in his case he crossed multiple generations, to race all the classics and the great tours. In his book he states the LeMond is totally justified focusing only on the Tour.

The only other race he targeted was the World Championship, which he won twice, of course.

I sincerely admire Greg LeMond and wish that the Armstrong Machine would lay off. LeMond is honest and I agree with him.

I would much rather watch a slower TDF that I'm sure is (at least mostly) clean than something that is systematically tainted.

The 1989 tour is my favourite race of all time. Both fignon and lemond are great champ. The win at the end was mind boggling. greg did the fastest time trial speed of all time.

Greg tries but its a very unpopular movement. Genetic doping could only be stopped with Performance value testing as purposed.

You know, when I listen to Greg, I love it. His sense of fair play is unrivaled. Christian Van de Velde said it, the speed of the peleton was much slower on the climbs in the 2008 TDF. I hope the high level testing are kept up. The 2008 TDF was great.

Say what you want about the man -- he speaks the truth. Some dismiss him as a bitter ex-champion, jealous of Armstrong's success and adoration. But to those of us who really love cycling, and who have taken the time to do the homework on Armstrong, Greg doesn't seem bitter at all. As time has passed since voicing his first audacious suspicions about Armstrong, I'm not aware of a single question or accusation he's raised that's been proven false. Greg remains the US's greatest true champion.

I've been a cycling fan for the past 20 yrs. Am neither American or French, but am so sick of the Lance fans who criticise Lemond. To these people, please do your own research on Lance - look at his physiology, the increased amount of oxygen required to pedal such a high cadence for example. Look outside Lance's autobiogrpahies. One example - His VO2capacity was in the low 80s. Lemond's was one of the highest ever seen in a cyclist - low 90s. Respect Lemond for the great champion he is.
