  • For the guy who asked how 6.2 and 6.5 litre engines made it in to a Detroit Diesel forum, please know the 6.2 was a Detroit Diesel design when DDC was owned by General Motors. Also, they designed the the engine around a International cast block. Just look on top of the block and you'll find a "Diamond logo".

  • do those detroits have alot of pulling power or are they juss for sounding and makin the rig badass lol

  • Hey. Nice truck. I got a 4-71 I'm putting in a truck. I was wondering how fast your truck will go so I will have a idea about mine

  • @6detroitdiesel5 How are 6.5 and 6.2 gm designed boat anchors making it into ACTUAL detroit diesel video comments?

  • I was curious is that enough engine for that much truck?? especialy for trailer pulling??

    I want to put a 3208 in my 79 f350

  • uh do u have to mix the diesel with oil like any other two stroke

    lol

  • @crazyashell389

HA HA, no, it doesn't work that way in these.

  • @crazyashell389 That is unique to pretty much only 2 stroke gasoline engines aside from other odd ball engines no one has really ever heard of.

  • @crazyashell389 mmm does any body know if is possible to take out my stupid nopower E40d tranny and swichet to a two sticks tranny my ford truck got a 7.3 liter navistar powered engine please somebody help me !!

  • @dieselinside69 just get a NV 4500 or 5600 from a Dodge or GM and an adapter for it to bolt on

  • @bighunterman77 that kind of tranny is hard to find b´cos i live in mexico !! and i really want to see my truck with two sticks !!!!

  • My 6.2 non turbo is in my 85 K10 Chevy I bet it has over 350 thousand and still runs strong with a new set of dual 2 1/2in straights, sounds awesome. Doesn't burn a lick of oil, change it every 3 to 5 thousand miles, can't go wrong with a Detroit!

  • What kind of milage do you get with that 4-53?

  • Going into a 'Burb? Niccccce!

  • my 6.2 is 28 years old 250,000 miles,, 21 mpg,,? i really dont think that falls in the pos catagory? I dont think thats to bad at all no they dont have all the power in the world but still run forever and very cheap truck to drive. these new 5.4 fords are the biggest pos on the road, junk.

  • @tobysteve22

Yeah, I hear of a few few people now and again that have good luck with them, but the majority are nightmares. Just do a Google search and you will see just how many have problems. I will have to agree on the Fords also.

  • @gmbo6969 - I think a lot of people get the 6.2 and 6.5 confused with the 5.7 Oldsmobile diesel.... which has a bad repuation.... 6.2/6.5 is not a bad engine... even the 5.7 wasn't really that bad... most people who owned them drove and maintained them as they would a gas engine... diesels don't live very long under those conditions....

  • @tobysteve22 not to mention, you pretty much have to pull tha cab off to do just about anything to the engine.

  • @tobysteve22 - gotta love those 6.0 Power Jokes.... LOL - They DO sound nice through open exhaust though...

  • @tobysteve22 agreed i have its big brother 6.5 turbo with no problems for 18 years 260k.. there was a reason the military put them in everything

  • thats a nice truck

  • I'd just leave it in the flatbed! But I guess you probably want passengers or something too, huh? And the Suburban probably weighs less than a 1-ton flatbed...maybe. I dunno, those fuckers are pretty damn heavy!

  • depends what 6.2 block you go with..

  • im wanting to put a 6.2L or a 4-53Tin my truck i think the 4-53 would be cooler

  • Yes, cooler, but more of a pain! These engines are very heavy! I ended up going with a Cummins 12 valve. Stay away from the 6.2. It is a POS.

    Good luck!

  • Hey there, I thought that I would give you an update on the transplant. I got the engine tore down but for the crank and pistons, replaced all of the gaskets cleaned and installed it in my chassis. It looks and fits good. The blower needed some help, but nothing major. I found the spring pack in the drive coupler had some broken springsand retainers, but that is a cheap and easy fix. The drive lines are the next hurdle, But I should have it runnin and on the road (with some video) in 2 months+/-

  • Sweet! I'm glad someone is doing something with it! It is a really cool motor. Drive lines are easy. I found out when I had to do it on my Cummins conversion. Do you have any pics yet? I would love to see it. Thanks!

  • Definately! I will see what can do with what have, Later!

  • Awesome swap motor !! Love that Detroit 2 Stroke sound !!!

  • Is the suburban going to be for sale???

  • Already sold. Thanks!

  • can you put a a stationary 471 in a truck? i dont know much about diesels, but i know alot about gas engines and making stuff work, i know how diesels work and everything just not about the diferent types

  • I'm sure you can! You will need a variable speed governor. It will be heavy! This one weighed about 1300#.

  • beencheese.....not sure what kind of "truck" your thinking of putting a 4-71 into....but, for a pickup of any size

your looking at about 17 - 1800lbs and

you would need to change the gov. to a variable speed as gmbo6969 replied

below. Also, the 71's use anSAE#2 bell housing....so, unless your going to

bolt an Allison or a large truck tranny

to it.....your in for some serious fabricating....not to mention, nose heaviness. Might concider a "mid-engine"

    placement..stretch the frame

  • did this truck come with this engine from the factory? or what are the 4-53's originaly out of?military stuff?

  • No, this truck was built by the Detroit service center in Washington.

They use 4-53's in all kinds of stuff like air compressors, generators, graders, and some people put them in pickups!

  • do they still have the 2 stroke detroits on da market?

  • Well, they don't make them new, but you can buy used ones all the time. I am actually selling this one. I have too many projects, so this one is heading down the road.

  • How much are you asking for the motor/trans/mounts? Be kinda cool for a plow truck.

  • Well, make me an offer! I have it listed on eBay with a buy it now of $2800. That comes with EVERYTHING though. From the air cleaner to the down pipe and 5 speed trans. I am willing to take offers though! Let me know. Thanks!

  • no.... they don't meet the emission crap now.....they were a good engine @ the time they made them tho...

  • is the engine heavy?

  • YES! From what I have read, it weighs about 1600#.

  • That is ridiculous. I would use a detroit V8,

the kind that was availble in GM pickups and blazers back in the day.

  • Well, I started to, but the 6.2/6.5 was a POS. I have a 93 1 ton that has the 6.5 turbo in it. They have no power and overheat all the time. I just finished putting heads on because they were both cracked. Plus, it is ridiculous! That's why I had to do it! HA HA!

  • U could always intstall an aftermarket radiator and a larger turbo

  • I put in the aluminum radiator after the copper one blew up. More turbo = more heat. I also did the cooling upgrade kit, Duramax fan, dual thermostat, HO water pump, and it still got hot and cracked the heads. I was just pulling a car trailer. These motors are known for this problem.

  • Damn that sux dude. I heard the detroit

V8's used in newer HMMWV's don't have that problem.

  • Which V8's are you talking about ? The

    old 2cycles ? Just curious.

  • I'm talking about the 6.2 and 6.5 liters V8s bro.

  • neurocytohemotoxic.....hmmm, try spelling THAT for a cop....3 times fast...

    after 9 or 10 beers ! hehe...anyway..just

so you know...the "detroit" diesel which

you refer to (div. of GM)..is Not the same as Detroit Diesel Corp.....now. When the 2cycles were being built, DD

WAS a div. of GM...but it was spun off & now DDC is under MTU which is an

    industrial engine subsidiary of Daimler-

Benz . DDC still builds heavy duty diesels, but not 2cycles.

  • Yes I know that GM sold Detroit Diesel to Daimler-Benz (it was Daimler Chrysler at the time). It sucks that they no longer make light duty diesels. However, there are alot of light duty detroit diesel engines in older tractors, industrial machines, etc. There are alot of used light duty Detroits that are up for sale.......check some websites if u want to.

  • AWESOME EXPLAINATION!

I think that the newer engines built by DDC are crap! Nothing runs like a screamin jimmy!

  • Dude I read that water-methanol injection helps alot with that over heating problem.

  • I wouldn't do water-methanol on a daily driver though......

  • Why not?

  • The "detroit v8" that your referring to sir,

has absolutely Nothing in common the

the Detroit Diesel Division (past tense) of

GM..........the "v8" which you refer to was

Originally based on the Olds 305 ci gas

engine that was "modified" into a diesel

..........with more problems than " Carter

had Liver Pills ".......and evolved into the

6.2 / 6.5 engine....which wasn't much better. The duromax is a far cry from all its predecessors.......

  • I only called it a detroit v8 because it was a diesel engine manufactured by GM pre Duramax. It's a shame that the olds, 6.2, and 6.5 liter v8s were pieces of crap. I feel like their infamous reliability issues is one of the reasons why diesel cars and pickups (1/2 tons) are very uncommon in the US these days

  • neurocytohemotoxic.....Your right, that is

a good part of the reason....however as

some of the great advances that are being made in " clean " diesel technology...especially from Europe..are being filtered in over here...I think you might see some significant gains in diesel sales in the not too distant future...that is...depending on what transpires from that meeting in Copenhagen next month....if they don't decide to exterminate us to " save the planet ".

  • I read that the clean diesels built between 2007 and present are incompatible with biodiesel because of the emissions system they use.

  • To some extent. Some of the manufacturers use an exhaust stroke injection to send vaporized fuel into the exhaust to heat up the dpf. Unfortunately biodiesel does not vaporize as easy as diesel, so some stays liquid and washes down the cylinder walls into the oil. This is the reason they say to use the extreme duty maintenance schedule with biodiesel. So, yes you can use biodiesel but but you have to change the oil more often and you will get a regen more often.

  • What does dpf stand for?

  • diesel particulate filter. The new trucks have a catalytic converter which feeds into the dpf. It is an amazing set-up. The exhaust actually smells like the exhaust from a propane powered forklift. The 2010 trucks will have the same setup but will add urea injection to deal with NOx emissions.

  • Interesting

  • gmbo6969........just so you know....the 4-53T is 1300# plus or minus options, but the only heavy option would be a

possible air compressor in certain situations...which you won't need. The

    6V53 (non-turbo) weighs in at about 1550 - 1570.

  • how much did you pick this beast up for?

  • I got it for $1500 on Craigslist. The motor is now sitting in the frame of my Suburban waiting for a little spare time and cash.

  • damn so they go for cheep! its probably a rare find tho huh?

  • Sounds like it's going to be a great swap. I have a Chevy van I'd like to swap either a 4bt cummins or 353t detroit into. I'm leaning toward the jimmy because of sound, but the main reason I want to swap out the 350 is fuel mileage. I know 4BT conversions can get 30mpg+; what have you gotten so far?

  • Haven't gotten it going yet. I have it sitting in the frame, but there is a lot of twist, so I am going to have to box it in. I have heard from a few places that this truck with the overdrive Brownie will get 30+. I will post when I get it fired. I have also heard that the 4BT has vibration problems, so if you go that route, look into some really good mounts. Thanks!!

  • make sure you run straight pipe on your sub! =)

  • I wouldn't have it any other way! I can't wait to be sitting next to one of those cars with the loud stereo and their window down. I am going to run a 4" stack down the side under the body like a lake pipe and turn out in front of the rear tire.

  • i saw a dually standard cab on craigslist in my area today and i wanted it but it was only a standard cab and not crew cab and crew cab is what i really want danmit i guess i could tranfer it over but just don't have the time to do that this year

  • Take it from me, it takes a lot of time. I got the motor sitting in the frame and that's about it.

  • what flywheel housing do you have ,the real thin one ,I would live to get a 5speed tranny is it a chev y tranny.I just put a 453 in a 79 chevy 2wheel dr frame, one ton dually, the cab was junk ,so I took it off and put on a 48 chevy loadmaster ,it has a t19 wagner 4 speed, out of a 750 ford city deliver truck---I would post on u-tube but don.t know how to put on still photos,

  • I'm not sure on the bellhousing. It is a 5 speed, but top gear is 1-1, not OD. It is just like the old granny 4 speeds, with one more gear. Thanks!

  • The front end grille is from a 1980 Chevy truck.

  • Yeah, I'm sure this truck has been put together with many different vehicles! Thanks!

  • and tractors lol....

  • HA HA, good one.

  • Finally got some video of mine today so I posted it as a response to yours. Now that I looked at mine again closer after seeing yours I guess there are some big differences in how yours was situated in the engine compartment. Can't wait to see and hear about your progress with putting it in your suburban. That's be awesome.

  • A little different. Not much. The blower is mounted on the opposite side. It sure is heavy on the passenger side with everything on theat side.

  • That looks like it was maybe done by the same people that did my 76 GMC. Got the 4-53t in my 76 GMC. I love it! Except for the fact that the engine is so heavy and my pickup is two wheel drive so that front end just sinks right in and it gets stuck extremely easy.

  • Well, I got the motor out and it is sitting in the frame of my Suburban now! Do you have any pictures or video of yours? Thanks!

  • Yeah I was going to put mine in a suburban too, but now I have a powerstroke Ford Excursion and like to still have my pickup for hauling stuff around so I've just left it the way it is. No I don't have any pics or video of it right now. I did but they got lost. I'll have to get some more real soon and post them on here. What year suburban?

  • It is a 79 4X4. I will post some more video soon.

  • How is the power from this engine? does it tow well?

  • It seemed to have pretty good power. Right now it is torn down and I am putting it in the Suburban

  • Turbo and everything. Thats a sweeeet setup.

  • Thanks!! Yeah, I can't wait to get going on this project!

  • Cool set up. That should work good in your subruban.

Like to see some of it going down the hwy before you pull the motor.

  • Me too but the tags are expired. I'm just going to junk the truck when I pull the motor, trans and pedals. The Burban is an auto, so I have to pull all of the manual stuff out. The body is crap but it has a real stout flat bed on it with a goose neck hitch. I figure someone might want it.

  • I know, I know!! Super busy in the shop and had no time to learn anything new! I will have to post something pretty quick....

  • thats a cool engine but u should post sum guitar covers! xD
