You should never throw away the pod straight away. After you have extracted the seeds you should put it into a container with your sugar. The flavour will be extracted for a very long time...months even, giving your sugar a very nice vanilla flavour, great for cooking with. :-)
The seeds inside the Pod contain the flavor. They are edible and their texture is smooth & not disturbing. The Pod itself goes in the bin. If you are cooking the Vanilla in Milk (For Ice Cream for example) you can add the Pod during the cooking procedure. It adds a bit more flavor, but afterwards it should be dumped. In regards to amounts .. well, it depends what you are cooking. For Ice Cream I use 3 Pods for 1 Liter.

the black stuff is the vanilla the rest just goes to the garbage?
how much of it do you have to use? (compared to synthetic vanilla)
