It's because of when Vista first came out, there was a lot of confusion as to the packages (Basic/Premium/Business and such) and 32 vs 64 bit. Also, many programs didn't work before SP1 but now that some have been fixed, others don't work. There was also a huge update on RAM management in Vista with SP1 so now it runs just as well as XP.
