im sure you are using a mac? anyway if you are on a pc then note that shorcuts and button layout are different. and 'Dantheman' try saving your project with no effects just the solids, then close and reopen after effects, this will resest the default layout giving you the mode option next to your layer names.

when u said change the mode to "Screen"

but on my version it aint got that :S

Underneath that section where there is meant to be the "screen" mode, there is a button that says Switches/modes! Click on it, to switch between that screen and the one with the modes. Or press F4 to also switch between them. If that doesn't work, well then what version of after effects do you have???
