  • Funny thing, Poles took the sabre from the Hungarians.

  • what a crap. that's not fencing of any kind at all

  • I've always been real hesitant to go full speed with my Hutton sabre. Never was quite sure just how durable those Hanwei blades were. Guess I can stop worrying so much.

  • @brad768284 They do break quite easily, unfortunately. Three out of four I bought for our group are broken.

  • I miss this.. Must go back sometime, so much fun

  • These are hutton sabres and this is 19th century english sabre fencing.

  • sabres where in wide use from 18th to 20th centrury but were around since the 14th.

  • @unicorland:

The sabre was a infantry and a cavalry weapon. Hutton discribes also special techniques for soldiers, using the pummel. Especially in the 19 th sabres were used for duells between Gentleman. Mostly lightweight sabres were used for this, because they didn´t wanted to kill each other.

I approve the Book "Cold Steel" a practical treatise on the sabre written by Alfred Hutton -1889-

    ISBN 1-843428-37-7

  • ty for the info=D

  • Actually, in western Europe sabers were mainly used in duels by military officers. Civilians prefered the smallsword or variants thereof.

In eastern Europe, especially Poland, the saber was a far more popular dueling weapon.

And saber duels could be very messy -sometimes lethal- affairs that ended with hands or even heads cut off. (I've seen an actual photo of this. Not nice.)

  • I have one more question. Did they ever use sabrs in the 18th century or was it just symbol of power?

  • ty =D cus I stared saber fencing a while ago and would like to find out it's origin

  • Hi Unicornlad. Sabres would have been used from the 18th century trough to the early 20th century.

  • If you say so that means you don't have any idea bout sabres. i'm Polish so i know better. in Poland (the Republic Of The Two Nations) Sabres were used since XV century by the gentry, and it was so popular that everyone of the gentry had their own. THe Sabre For Polish is like, Katana and Wakizashi for the Japanese.

  • I got the info from wiki and I didn't realise that being Polish meant you had inherited knowledge! :) I bow to your superior genes.

  • @blackkat5 Wikipedia is accessible to anyone, as editable to anyone. Your information is wrong, as sabres have indeed been used since the 14th century.

  • Wiochą zapachniało. Wystarczy wiedzieć, nie trzeba się obnosić. Dlatego się teraz z nas śmieją.

  • @solonek Im polish to!

  • during what time did they use sabers? was it during the mideivil time or after?

  • hey i do fencing there!

  • Cool, I've always wondered what historical saber fencing looked like. :)
