  • get twixtor for your sony vegas it's a plug in which makes really nice slow mo!

  • Comment removed

  • thumbs up if you instinctively counted the rounds

  • '

    what did he shooting to

  • Nice. Just got an HF S100 myself and uploaded some footage.

  • for sure man. its such a good camera. once you know your way around it you can get some REALLY good shots.

I'm uploading a new video i upresed tonight..its got lots of good slow mo shot on the settings i gave you.

check it out when you get a chance. it'll be called A Day At Race.

  • you should shoot in the next shutter speed above double your frame rate.

like instead of 1/60 for 30p, shoot 1/120.

    Your slowmos will look DELICIOUS.

But never go too crazy with your shutterspeed.

Like say you shot 1/1000...it would make your footage really stroby and weird.

Anyways, hope this helped man! DVX's rock!

  • Good intel. I didn't really have intentions of slowing this down when I shot this clip because I had just got the camera and was just messing around. I do have a strong desire to do some good looking slow-mo now though. I'll definately try to remember that little tidbit.

  • @JakeBurnsRed Hey man I'm using the CANON VIXIA HF S10 what would be the perfect shutter speed for fast movement. Let's say like a break dancer. What would be a good shutter speed? And does a too high shutter speed look bad?

PLEASE GET BACK AT ME SOON, THANKS!

  • @kdavidse Too high of a shutter speed does look bad. it makes it look choppy.

The faster the shutter speed you set, the more light you will need first and foremost.

i'm not super familiar with your camera, but the best rule of thumb is to shoot double your frame rate.

If you are shooting in 60 frames per second you should use 1/120.. 30 fps would be 1/60

You can bump it up to 1/250 or so if you have a high enough frame rate, but if you go too high, say 1/500 or 1/1000, you're footage

  • @kdavidse will look strobey and weird. Just do some quick shots on different shutter speeds and see which ones come out the best!

i found on my dvx that i can use 1/250 or 1/500 and it still look pretty good....if i remember correctly..i havent been shooting slow mos in a while lol.

    Good luck man!

  • i've actually done some learning about shutter speeds and things that look good.

I film skateboarding, so of course i need something good for fast motion.

I actually stopped shooting in 60i and started shooting in 30p. Same frame rate just not interlaced which makes a lot of difference on the final output.

The trick to shutter speed is to shoot AT LEAST double your frame rate.

    30p=30fps - translates to 1/60 shutter speed.

But if you want your footage to look REALLY smooth: (cont)

  • shoot 60i and turn your shutter speed up.

  • @JakeBurnsRed

Pretty sure it was in 60i, but I think I had it in an auto mode or P instead of Tv. I can't beleive I didn't think about manual shutter speed control. That was probably most certainly the cause of the ghosting now that I think about it.

  • @TheCouchCrusader 60i shouldnt give you any problem with slow mo....everytime ive shot in 60i ive never changed the shutter speed.....but when ive shot in 30p i completely forgot about the shutter and was shooting for slo mo and it sucked balls

  • İt is so impressive when you watch a soundless video someone shooting with a gun

  • so this camera does shoot in 60FPS or is it 60i

  • Yes and yes. It will shoot 60FPS (frames per second) when in 60i (60 interlaced frames per second), or 30fps when in 30p (30 progressive frames per second), or 24 fps when in 24p. Software deinterlacing is so good though that I can't see a difference between footage originally shot progressive, and footage that was shot interlaced and then later deinterlaced. So for fast motion, you might as well shoot 60i and get yourself twice the frame rate.

  • Can u shoot in 60 FPS to achieve a smother slow motion?

  • If your intent is to shoot slow motion, then yes you would want to shoot 60fps (or as high as your camera will go). That's part of the equation. I beleive part of what I dislike about this particular video (ghosting by the muzzle) was caused by a slower shutter speed. Look at my other video titled "Silence of the fruits" to see 60fps slow mo with a higher shutter rate. Played back at 25% I beleive.

  • Thanks!

  • Wait can the Canon Vixa HF 10 Shoot in slow motion?

  • Not exactly, the camera is just capable of recording at a moderately higher frame rate (60 frames per second) which can then be slowed down to the standard 30 frames per second and deliver a smooth looking clip, but with motion at half speed. It's all easily done on the computer, and there are some better looking results on youtube than what I ended up with here.

  • so you're saying record at 30 FPS and in post slow it down...hmm ok thanks :)

  • No, 30 fps is a fairly standard play rate for normal video. Record a video at 60fps, then in post, slow it down 50% so that it's only playing 30 fps, and your video will ook like it's only playing half as fast as real life.

  • hahaha ok thanks :) that'll be awesome. Sorry for all the questions, but do you if there is a way to cause the effect of slow motion but then all of a sudden have the clip jump to regular speed? ie someone is trying to punch someone. So the clip starts out in slowmotion then all of a sudden speeds up? (i'm using imovie) I guess one way might be take break the clip up into two parts and then half the first half be slow and the 2nd half be normal?

  • Yep, that's the only way I know how to do it too, just to split the clip and slow down the portion you want. I'm assuming it will look pretty good, but i've never tried doing that particular effect. Idk how the pros do it.

  • well once I get this fight scene shot I'll send you a shot out to take a look. :)

  • Sounds good dude. I'm curious to see how it turns out. Btw, I'm digging the whole docu/guerilla shooting style in your entry 21 project. Has a real "Cloverfield" feel to it.

  • Oh thanks so much man. Its gotten into two film festivals but still I think its a little "ahead" of itself. And the genre is a little skewed. People don't know if they should laugh or be worried. hahaha. Which is exactly what I was going for. Yea man I personally would like to work with JJ Abrams man. I think he's a really smart smart man. :-D And thanks for watching my stuff brother I appreciate it. The fight scene stuff is for "Book of 12". But thats all test shooting.

  • no, slow motion is gonna lose quality, you can slow motion in any video if u sing sony vegas.

  • Somebody needs to tell Eugenia to shut the fuck up.

She's a master of adding her two cents where they clearly are not needed or wanted.

Sorry Eugenia, but your fucking annoying posts totally killed Vimeo for me. Please do us ALL a favor and leave your opinions only for those who ask for it. Your not the "be all, end all" of video production.

  • With my hf-s100, when I used 60i then converted to 60p, it was so much more choppy than just leaving it interlaced. Try leaving it interlaced and see if it runs even smoother. It did for me...

  • Thanks for the input, I'll give it a shot.

  • that's because you can't take 60 interlaced frames (half frames) and magically turn it into 60 progressive frames (full frames). If you want to go from interlaced to progressive, you're going to want to convert 60i to 30p.

  • If you havn't slowed your clip down (which can be accidentally done by dragging the edge of a clip) then it might have something to do with a conflict of your import and project settings. (or maybe export settings if it does it after being rendered) Beyond that, I'm not sure. Sorry, never experienced it.

  • brilliant!! just a quick question when editing in vegas 9, any tips of how to get rid of slow video preview/playback??

  • Read my "hints and tips" article for Vegas on my blog, I have the solution there.

  • do you mean its a bit jerky? like its lagging? That might be down to your pc not being powerful enough

  • It's just a ghosting artifact that is noticable mainly as I swing the barrel up. I'm just not sure if the slow mo can be improved, or if I've hit a wall as to how much I can slow 60p. Though I'm sure there's probably ways of morphing or tweening to create more frames and making it more smooth. I just havn't really had the motivation to mess with it any more. The computer doesn't seem to have any problems rendering or playing back the files though. I think it's just a matter of technique.
