Warmer air is lighter; therefore we have buoyancy and an upward airstream (convection). Any assymetry between the two airstreams creates a torque - and the paper rotates.
I sort the thermo dynamics theory out, that is what you discribe with heat rising.
I also watched that it spins to 90+% of the attempts counterclockwise. This happens on different locations. I also used different paper, but it still twists counterclockwise(?). You can try it by yourself. Take a piece of paper and wrinkle it two times, take a needle and carton, then pierce the needle through the carton.
