Does it count if your "board" is made up of dozens of little pieces?

Room #11 had 6 guards waiting for the PC's to enter...the fight begins & a guard goes down fast ...but they never once yell for help to the people in the 3 rooms nearby all within 5 squares of their room...especially if each of those rooms are supposed to be their own encounters...............but they WILL come if they are part of that rooms' encounter. what a gong show.

I have had players say " I want to play 4th this weekend cause i don't feel like thinking...been a long week at work".

I'm trying to figure out how to play right now so that I won't look so newb. I can't find any of the online instructions though.
They said the main reason they play is because the Game Master makes up his own little Stories,(Hack&Slash) and makes them really funny.

Keep one thing in mind...almost never use a basic attack unless you are given a free one (from abilities or effects) ...use all your encounter powers right away...theres no point in saving them...strategy in that game never really gets that complicated. don't be afraid to use up your action points...you get 1 every 2 combats & only can use 1/combat. rinse-repeat.

Even with a good DM...you can't get the players to stop thinking that they're just looking at miniatures on a flat mat with interesting pictures.
As a side note, pick a basic class easy to understand with good survival, a fighter.

@DeathForRomance if you get a chance...play 1st-2nd edition D&D first ....then you won't be so depressed when D&D for dummies is your only option cause then at least you know you can return to something so much more grand. 1st-2nd breeds a much stronger player b/c the mind has to sharpened significantly more to survive. I have had players say " I want to play 4th this weekend cause i don't feel like thinking...been a long week at work".

@hexusziggurat I don't have the money to buy any of them, but my friend wants me to go and play 4th Edition with him and some of their friends at the Comic Book Store.
I'm trying to figure out how to play right now so that I won't look so newb. I can't find any of the online instructions though.
They said the main reason they play is because the Game Master makes up his own little Stories,(Hack&Slash) and makes them really funny.

@DeathForRomance if you are sticking to one nighters or "stuffer shacks", then 4th is fine. Its actually pretty hard to die in 4th ed. Keep one thing in mind...almost never use a basic attack unless you are given a free one (from abilities or effects) ...use all your encounter powers right away...theres no point in saving them...strategy in that game never really gets that complicated. don't be afraid to use up your action points...you get 1 every 2 combats & only can use 1/combat. rinse-repeat.

@DeathForRomance 4th ed is more about figurine moving...thats why i often don't use them when i run my 1st-2nd ed gaming group. Or else it just turns into an interesting chess game rather than a fantasy combat that exercises our minds and story telling abilities. Even with a good DM...you can't get the players to stop thinking that they're just looking at miniatures on a flat mat with interesting pictures.
As a side note, pick a basic class easy to understand with good survival, a fighter.
