if you will view the black sea from batumi georgia, it doesnt even look black! It looks light green/ blue. BINGO all of Europes shit falls in the black sea, and because of that the algae explode , reproducing many times more than normal, as there is alot of nutrients, causing the seas water to change from blue to a black color, in georgia the water is much cleaner because there are no major rivers opening up there. @garioldwin I live near the Black Sea and it is not cold for swimming in the summer, It is warm and nice. About pollution, there are some industrialized areas that are polluted, the rest appears to be clean.

The huge amount of that gas makes the waters look darker. The reason why the Black Sea cannot expel the gas to the Mediterranean Sea, is the hidden current in Bosporus. It flows underneath the top layer of the water back in to the Black Sea, while the primary, top current flows to the Mediterranean. The bottom current also is more rich in salt, that is why it falls on the bottom of the Black Sea without mixing with the top layers of the water in that Sea.

The Black Sea has a thick layer of poisonous gas from the bottom and up to about 150-250 meters from the top. It is cosed by the dead plant life and fish. Their remains accumulate at the bottom and because the Black Sea cannot expel all of that to the world ocean, all of that filth stays there and creates a gas. During storms, this gas sometimes comes to the top and gets in to contact with air and becomes a fire. So it is possible to see the flames in the middle of the water.

the Black Sea is known as one of the most violent seas on the world.this is because out at sea storms come very quickly and almoust no warning.only warning that seamen had sailing in the sea before a storm,was that the water itself would change colour in a very very dark blue.not to mention that during the storm the sea is almous black.there are many legends sorounding the Black Sea.i know this because im from a fishermen's town right on the seas coast :)

I believe the Black Sea is so named because in the ancient, far east, the color black indicated north, while red indicated south. Thus, from the perspective of the ancient Turks, the Black Sea was north, the Red Sea was south and in the middle was the Mediterranean.

I grew up with that sea, and it was actually the Greeks who named it Pontus Euxinus, which means 'the inhospitable sea', because when they first came in, there was a storm or something. But it is called Black Sea becuase of it's waters(which is not always true, sometimes its crystal clear)
