I don't like what I'm seeing. Looks like something for a phone or tablet style machine, but not something one would want on a desktop or laptop. All that flipping and sliding is distracting and an eyesore. It's just too gimicky. I think microsoft needs to rethink this.
@chickenfarm09 my answer is those are super annoying and defeats the purpose of having a machine thats all self contained.. surfing the web through touch is now a standard and fast and natural, u must be a lazy bitch

I installed it on my fujitsu T-730 multi-touch last night and the were was no response to touch screen and confused me and now it is going to take a while to remove it.
I've actually been messing with this all day in virtualbox, and I was getting it with the full intention of absolutely hating it. The end result: It's actually decent. Don't know if I'd ever get it for a desktop, but if I ever got a tablet, I'd definitely get one with win 8 on it.

@queenform it is my understanding you can run Win8 in legacy Windows mode, meaning the standard START and desktop view. This is a pad/tablet/touch demonstration because Windows and Win Tablets have traditionally lacked the ease, elegance and interface that Apple provided in the iPad.
If you run a desktop or non-touch laptop, you would change your mode to desktop mode as opposed to touch mode.

@dazeordavid He doesn't show it in the video, but you can switch to the normal desktop mode if you want to. The UI you see is just a tablet-friendly interface that runs on top of everything else. This is a full windows OS, not a watered down version like iOS. It can run any windows program whether it's on a tablet or a desktop. So obviously on a desktop, you would use the desktop interface. Way to judge a book by it's cover.
if apple designed this metro ui every one would say it looks sooo damn sexy but because its windows n Microsoft some people say other wise. Me personally it does look sexy as a tablet touch screen form, sooo much better then the static boring stacked up icons on ios in the ipad. Not too sure how much i would like it as my operating system on pc would take a lot of getting used to. This is coming from a mac user :)

@xImMorTalxT ya i heard there's an option to go back to regular lol but ya same i thing everything is sexy looking in its own way, but a lot of mac users are to conceited to figure it out
I hope they keep an option for users to use the same old UI as windows 7... Some users prefer functionality and usability rather than how pretty it looks. I don't understand why they'd scrap the whole windows experience to develop their new apparent mobile platform.
@Gheerishm Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of it or anything, I'm sure it will be great for mobile computing and for the average consumer customer, but this IS a mobile platform no matter how you look at it, and the UI is optimized for media/entertainment/browsing and not for business/work. Also it's optimized for a much smaller screen than other common win-like interfaces made for desktops, which give more control up front (hence why those are not appropriate for mobile computing).
@PenileFracture 2 different desktops, no integration of the apps into the system (main system is Windows 7) swiping trough full screen to find another 1, no structure in arrangement of the apps, no clear structure in general, interface is horrible they only used paint bucket in photoshop xD
@Koopa362 From what I've seen the tablet system only has one interface. When you talk about integration in to the system for apps, I believe this OS does a better job than any I've seen so far. I mean, the icon tiles display usage and notifications. The only tablet OS that doesn't make you "swipe through whole screen to find another one" is the Playbook OS. The only thing I don't like, is how flamboyant the tiles look. But if that's customize-able then I'm sold :P
I've been with Windows since, well day 1. Never left. I even got "Windows Millennium" man that thing crashed on me everyday. I never lost hope. Thank you Apple for waking up the Giant! All my comps run the newest windows always, and I can't wait for 8! I will also get a Windows 8 Tablet and Windows 8 phone. Universal sync god willing!
I noticed W8 Start sreen looks like a WINDOW. lol! AHHH its nice when your team does well. :)
why are all you morons saying its for touch and u cant use it very well its easy to use with your mouse aswell and keyboard im using it now you just click the things same as you always did just that some things are in a different place.People are so retarded i hated vista and windows 7 xp was the only 1 i liked and i figured id install this and moan about another shitty windows but no im actually very happy the performance is great just give it a try and u will learn to love it :)
XP was a win, Vista was a SKIP, Windows 7 was good but Windows 8 SUCKS BIG TIME.
What is this metro crap? Just make the windows 7 interface but make it work faster and with better hardware compatibility and make ALL drivers multithreaded and 64 bit. Maybe include more free useful utilities to tell you how disk space is utilized and other utilities.
The best they came up with is making my pc into a piece o crap PHONE interface. JUNK JUNK JUNK.
@MusiciansForums How can you say that Windows 8 Sucks when I bet you haven't even tried it!
maybe you have tried the developer preview... When Windows XP was about to launch many people weren't really keen on it, so they used a previeus OS, I remenber very well, months after, EVERYONE loved it, you cannot say anything about 8 because you don't know it yet. Everybody cannot say anything about Windows 8 as is still in Production. we can post stuff after we have tried in real (Sorry bad English)
@MusiciansForums Actually i think your ideas are really good. Still... no one needs more windows bashing (even if i am pretty against their direction)
there comes a time when people likes to type :"CD C:\" to open directory (folder), and then win 3.11 popped out, with GUI and mouse support where these slow adopters are like IDGAF 'bout it, but in the end they're using it too..i'm pretty sure it's happening again right now..from mouse drag/click to finger swipe/touch
Looks shit, just switched to Linux Ubuntu 11.10 like an hour back. Not going back to Microsoft till they realise IT'S A FUCKING COMPUTER NOT A DAM PHONE.
@Falador321 Nice insult :P Well what's the point in it then if it's exactly the same as the previous release. Don't say increase in speed cos all Microsoft os's slow down.
@TOMMY95215 it's not "EACTLY" the same, it's like windows 95 and 98, internal fixes and changes, but same ui. I man macs have had the same ui since system 1.0. And windows isn't slow at all, windows 7 is pretty fast. Linux is fast but then again its meant to be light weight, windows is for all purpose. Microsoft's #1 priority is not to make it boot in like 20 seconds but to get the job done.
I couldnt watch past a minute or something because it was fkin annoying to see your finger moving the whole time back and forth, up and down like ur spaztic.
@Theoryola You shoudn't it is the best OS ever... This guy forgot to mention the desktop... which is like the Windows 7 desktop you are using right now. He left out the most important part which is turning people away. I am using Windows 8 like Windows 7 right now, but with hardware acceleration, longer battery life, and EXTREMELY quick boot time(even faster than Mac Os X) It is like Chrome OS boot time if you need comparison. Just try it out. If you do not like it, than I respect your opinion.
@crsmelee When it is released I am sure it will look quite different from this.
I just brought a new laptop last month and it is going to be a bastard to control without touch. The new start interface looks unnecessary and bland. The desktop looks like Windows 98. It isn't really just about this because with future releases, if this sells well, our beautiful desktop will soon be gone. :(
Does Microsoft OneNote run on this? I currently use OneNote for my class notes, if it does, would it be convenient to make the switch? I don't know if it'll be more or less productive, I never really liked tablets, and I also have to be able to type really fast.. I've taken a look at evernote, but I'm not comfortable with it.. The main issue is typing in equations in OneNote for calculus and I always require several squigly symbols.. If it does exist on the slate, then would it be good to draw?
Tested it myself its worse than I thought

Because you can run all the software like on a pc operating system.

PenileFracture 3 months ago
@PenileFracture 2 different desktops, no integration of the apps into the system (main system is Windows 7) swiping trough full screen to find another 1, no structure in arrangement of the apps, no clear structure in general, interface is horrible they only used paint bucket in photoshop xD
Koopa362 3 months ago
@Koopa362 From what I've seen the tablet system only has one interface. When you talk about integration in to the system for apps, I believe this OS does a better job than any I've seen so far. I mean, the icon tiles display usage and notifications. The only tablet OS that doesn't make you "swipe through whole screen to find another one" is the Playbook OS. The only thing I don't like, is how flamboyant the tiles look. But if that's customize-able then I'm sold :P

is there any sort of rough release date for this thing it looks sick...

Windows 8 is bloody amazing for performance speeds. You turn it on at the button, you're all logged in within 10 seconds.

@mindtwindompeople Linux has had that for a good few years now. Mandriva use it as a marketting point...... If boot times wow you, try Xpud

And no im not a mac guy... im an MCSE.

ZeldaSteinVideos95 4 months ago 2
@MusiciansForums Actually i think your ideas are really good. Still... no one needs more windows bashing (even if i am pretty against their direction)

One question - what kind of hardware are you running this on?
Touch screen, tablet? Mine doesn't do that! :)
Nifty, though !

there comes a time when people likes to type :"CD C:\" to open directory (folder), and then win 3.11 popped out, with GUI and mouse support where these slow adopters are like IDGAF 'bout it, but in the end they're using it too..i'm pretty sure it's happening again right now..from mouse drag/click to finger swipe/touch

@TOMMY95215 you derptard, they have a setting that brings back the windows 7 look...
Falador321 4 months ago
@Falador321 Nice insult :P Well what's the point in it then if it's exactly the same as the previous release. Don't say increase in speed cos all Microsoft os's slow down.
TOMMY95215 4 months ago
@TOMMY95215 it's not "EACTLY" the same, it's like windows 95 and 98, internal fixes and changes, but same ui. I man macs have had the same ui since system 1.0. And windows isn't slow at all, windows 7 is pretty fast. Linux is fast but then again its meant to be light weight, windows is for all purpose. Microsoft's #1 priority is not to make it boot in like 20 seconds but to get the job done.
Falador321 4 months ago

Theoryola 4 months ago
@Theoryola You shoudn't it is the best OS ever... This guy forgot to mention the desktop... which is like the Windows 7 desktop you are using right now. He left out the most important part which is turning people away. I am using Windows 8 like Windows 7 right now, but with hardware acceleration, longer battery life, and EXTREMELY quick boot time(even faster than Mac Os X) It is like Chrome OS boot time if you need comparison. Just try it out. If you do not like it, than I respect your opinion.
crsmelee 4 months ago
