I just did Cherry Creek today, and I'd only done a few class IV runs before. This was exhausting, and it must've been the most terrifying experience of my life...but SO fun. Our guide's oar actually snapped in two when we went down Mushroom, and he said that hadn't happened in at least the past 5 years.
And I was really glad that I never fell out of the boat, because after the initial swim test, I was like, "I'd HATE to have to swim later on." It sure helped to have two veterans in front of me.
My friends and I swam Toadstool. And interesting experience. I think the first thought that went through my mind was 'fudge' or something like that. The second was, 'So this is the last thing I will see on Earth. Sure glad I was wrong.
I just did this trip 2 days ago. Wow, AWESOME!!!!
My 3 favorite rapids are (1) Lewis' Leap (the last of the 13 class V's that are boated by the guests), (2) the Mushroom/Toadstool combination (probably the toughest customer-run rapids on the run), and (3) Blind Faith (probably the most technical customer-run rapid on the run).
The customers walk around the two toughest rapids: Flat Rock (each boat is run solo by a guide) and Class VI Lumdsen Falls (the rafts are lined around that one).
My class V warm-ups so far this year have been the Forks of the Kern and Burnt Ranch Gorge (Trinity), which were both awesome in their own rights, in addition to a whole lot of class IV stuff.
So I am sure that I am ready for Cherry--bring it on!!
AWESOME!
