2012 Hurricanes are in last place and playing in front of empty seats for the last 3 seasons.Bring back the Whalers and make sure they play that song again when they score goals
The video really shows how much of a faimly the Whalers team and their fans where...You'll never see anything like this again in pro sports, it just dosen't happen
We were the Lambeau field of professional hockey!!! We loved our hockey more than anything. It was all Connecticut had. And we loved every minute of it. The Jets had their comeuppance and we want our whalers back!!!!!!!
@rebelslayer13 The Pens are my favourite team at the moment.
The Jets were successful, the big problem was the arena's 5000 obstructed view seats. The Old Barn on Maroons was packed to capacity on most nights, especially during the playoffs.
And the Canadian dollar is worth more than a US dollar atm
QC and Seattle need new arenas first. KeyArena is a basketball arena (plus the T-Birds dont draw well) and Le Colisee is old. Winnipeg and Portland first (POR draws 10k for the Winterhawks)
The Jets were actually never a very good team, and because of the poverty in Winnipeg they made little money. If you remember, they left because of low ticket sales and unfortunately they're not doing much better in Phoenix.
Well yeah, but what I mean is that the average income in the US is higher than in Canada, and the difference is significant in the cities that have teams.
Arenas aren't an issue. Anaheim has a team for Christ's sake :P
@rebelslayer13 They had to build the arena for Anaheim, built just for hockey.
I meant I'm not a Pens fan FIRST.
And the Jets left not because of ticket sales, but because of rising prices and being in a small market. The salary cap and revenue sharing nowadays makes a team in the Peg viable.
@NessMencesal That's my point. And I'm pretty sure the Canes had an arena built just for the team.
The chances of Winnipeg, or anywhere getting an NHL team are based on relocation. And the team most likely to get relocated is the Coyotes, but I doubt that will happen for a while. It seemed like the league was still rebuilding in the 90's when they had those relocations, as the NHL had only until recently consisted of 30 franchises.
@rebelslayer13 It was 21 safe and stable franchises. Then came two more in back to back years (Sharks + Sens) and then the Ducks in 1994, Wild in 2000, Preds in 1998, and Jackets in 2000.
It became 30 for the first time in 2000-01 when the Wild and Jackets arrived.
It will be the Yotes moving to Winnipeg for 2011-12 and Atlanta to Quebec City whenever they put the shovels in ground for a new arena.
@NessMencesal Well if Winnipeg ever gets the Yotes back it would be disappointing. The last time a Canadian team even won the Stanley Cup was before I was born. If there is to be a good Canadian team this season it'll be the Habs, and shipping the Coyotes up to Winnipeg would just create another struggling Canadian team.
And by the way, no canadian teams have been struggling (except Ottawa's bankruptcy in 2003, and the lockout stopped that) in terms of attendance (where it really matters).
The Canucks and Flames should've had Cups (Canucks had 2 goals called back in '94 game 7 and Gelinas's goal was a goal in OT of '04 Game 6).
@NessMencesal The Canucks haven't won a Stanley Cup in their 40 years of existence and are pretty inconsistent in finishing well in the regular season. They just lost a bunch of good players too. And yes, check the standings throughout the past few years, the Canadian teams seem to inhabit the middle to low seeds, with the exception of the Canucks who it looks like will be dropping even further down the list this season, and of course the Canadiens. I would call that struggling.
@NessMencesal As for your crediting the Canucks with a Stanley Cup, I could care less about losing in game 7. I saw it happen in Detroit and I don't go around telling people we should have 12 Cups. The team that deserved it was the Penguins, and the team that deserved the 1994 Cup was the Rangers.
@NessMencesal Well I love the Canucks compared to the Rangers. I absolutely hate the Rangers franchise and almost every player who's ever played on it. But a Stanley Cup is what it is. Last year I thought the Canucks might have a shot but once the playoffs came around it didn't happen.
Wait... you're from Winnipeg? Well by all means I hope you get a team soon, because Bettman is probably aiming to give fucking New Mexico a team.
@MasterJoBob yeah but that was when the canadian dollar was in the shitter. with the new MTS centre and the proposed arena in quebec and the dollar worth more than the US dollar, returns to these cities are now possible. as for hartford, take a look at minnesota. the north stars couldn't sell tickets to save their lives and they ended up moving. however in 2001 when the wild came to town they began a sell out streak that lasted 10 years. i can see the same happening with hartford,
@connorrulz But the real question is do you really believe that the U.S Dollar will remain in the crapper like it is now? The answer is like it always has it will go back up and then what for Winnipeg? MTS only seats 15,000 fans. That franchise is doomed to fail again.
@MasterJoBob you are wrong, and have no idea of the real picture. hartford had good attendance for a franchise that never won anything, there were ups and downs, but there is strong support for hockey in Connecticut, more so than a handful of teams that already exists in the NHL right now. There is now a new XL center plan....if everything is built, it will just take one failing NHL team that wants to move someplace to get a boost.

I am, have always been, and always will be an Anaheim Ducks fan...
And 1st or 15th, I can't imagine hockey season not rolling around and the Ducks not being there...AWFUL...
BRING THEM BACK!
Another thing, about being a Ducks fan--
WE DIDN'T *STEAL* OUR TEAM!
The Whalers weren't relocated, they were stolen--simple as that.
Phoenix, Columbus, Florida...doesn't matter where...
The Jets--thankfully--are back, and the Nordiques are on the way...hat trick time, Let the Whale rise again!

I am NOT a Jets fan, or a Penguins fan, or a Whalers fan, but a hockey fan. Bring the Whalers, Nordiques, and Jets back.
What HFD needs for a new team:
1. New Arena - XL Center doesn't even satisfy the Mayor
2. Corporate Backing - They need the support of the local media and businesses.
3. A strong US Dollar - Might take a while
If Winnipeg can do it, Heartford can too. (Pun intended)
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@NessMencesal What do the Penguins have to do with this?
Also, Winnipeg wouldn't be able to handle a team, the Jets were never successful. And the US dollar is stronger than the Canadian dollar.
The next city with a team should be a stable one like Quebec City or Seattle.

@rebelslayer13 Thing is, they had what would have been a tying + winning goal in Game 7 called back by the refs.
And the Canucks didn't lose SHIT. The Hockey News says Canucks for the Cup. And struggling means in attendance, not in the standings.
Chicken Wings fans are so spoiled.... THANKS for ELIMINATING my JETS out of EXISTENCE in 1996 first round.

@rebelslayer13
average Winnipeg attendance in last season: 11,316, Lower than Phoenix
average Hartford attendance in last season: spiked to 13,000, but was 11,000 for years
At least Quebec was a consistent 14,500
you will never have an NHL team again and your memories of constant glory days and sold out arenas are delusional
Its over
