  • they also did a version of lilas dance at the house of blues. awsome but percy wasnt there. disapointing. i think they where fueding. i told john percy was next to none after jaco an he sort of shrugged it off. later i found thier was a east coast version of brand x with percy!

  • The recording mix is a little unbalanced, but wow Brand X doing Mahavishnu Orchestra

  • Awesome! Brand-x covering Mahavishu....I've never heard of this. Kickass

  • honestly it wasn't that bad a cover. Sure, there were a few slipups here and there but obviously can be overlooked.

  • Definitely John Goodsall on guitar, Percy Jones on Bass and I think Peter Robinson on keys...

  • Comment removed

  • Pierre Moerlin of Gong on drums!

  • To all haters, you should remember that jazz and fusion are not like classical or pop music reproducing what is written or on records...its a Live music that calls for interpretation, freedom and exploration. They don't claim to be Mahavishnu Orchestra they just play one of their song THEIR WAY...

  • Check out Birds of Flame for their version of this song. They do a great job covering this and other jazz fusion tunes.

  • what an excellent example of the gems you can find digging around on the tube. nnnnnnniiiiiiiccccceeeeee..........

spread the word so more peeps post their Brand X live stuff!!!

  • this sucks.

  • In the words of Yogi Berra "If you can't imitate'em, don't copy 'em"

  • definitely is Brand x ,not the leading brand but good in a fix ....not Phil Collins on drums ,me thinks its Frank Katz (last b x incarnation drummer from Tunnelz album )

  • thank you to make this music friend! didier d'agostino drummer on youtube.

  • NEVER TRY TO COPY THE MAHAVISHNU OCHESTRA DONT BE RIDICULOUS THOSE GUYS ARE NOT HUMANS

  • wot the hell??????....this isnt brand x is it?.....i refuse to believe thats phil collins on drums....i know this is a really difficult song, but jesus!!!!....not sure whether to laugh or cry....

  • 2.20 and then, of course the whole thing does fall apart, with brief interludes of some clarity.................brave not stupid.

    Yes,,,,,,,,,,,back to the original.

  • Funny comments at the end!!

  • Brand X is a great band.....Phil Collins on drums, etc............ But some things in life are better left alone!!!!! Anything by Mahavishnu is a tall order!!!!!

  • Perhaps this is the Mahavishnu with five deps sent to do the job.... John must have sent a sick note, Jan was having the Moog serviced, Billy's drums were having new heads fitted, Rick was in Ireland doing a one off with Riverdance and Jerry was deciding what colour his next violin should be.

Yep, that was it. I'm just putting on Birds of Fire to restore the REAL flavour of the original. PS The keys solo just didn't get the idea of modal improvisation and Jan Hammer solo style

  • fucking garbage.

bass player sucks bum cock, drummer has never heard the song and the guitar player is just torturing himself attempting pull this off with this guys.....they horse fucked the beginning and most eveything to the end.

you could say It's great except from the beginning to the end..

  • This version isn't bad. It grows on ya. Check out MY version of "BIRDS OF FIRE".

  • I don't know who this is but it sure is hell ain't Brand X.

  • Agreed with a bunch of fairly recent comments here... what were they thinking? This sounds like it could have been great fun to play for their friends at a practice, but Mahavishnu is not to be fucked with.

  • Yeah, this is actually not a very good piece....... pretty poor. But with that said, every great band should be excused if they don't have it together on stage once in a while. Some nights it clicks, some nights it doesn't. Give 'em a break!

  • I really love Brand X.

However, this is a piece of shit rendition of a masterpiece! How embarrassing! What were they thinking? "Hey guys, lets throw this tune in and prove were as good as Maha---the Japs will never know." Backfire! EPIC FAIL!

If I was Percy Jones, I'd try and take this pile of garbage video down!

  • fake brand x

  • This is a disgrace.....

  • Bass player couldn't find 1 despite several helpful nods from the guitarist....shame!

  • I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but that's not Phil Collins playing drums... Phil Collins is left handed..... and plays the drums left handed. If this is Brand X it's with a different drummer.

  • It's Pierre Moerlin of Gong fame. Phil left the band in 1977 and toured last with Brand X in 1979.

if you look at the other clips you can see it's Percy Jones for sure, although I can't see hardly any faces clearly here.

Responding to other and not this OP, I agree it might not be MO, but it takes guts to even attempt this, and it's boring to hear an exact copy of a song.

  • @beelzabubba yeah something about it just didn't look like Phil Collins

  • Brand X was a project of John Goodsall and Percy Jones.

Percy Jones met Phil Collins during the production of Brian Enos "another green world".

Actually Bill Bruford was planned for the drum job, but then Phil got it.

This band is unbelievable and, by the way, this is the best bass/drum team, the world has ever seen!

  • The more that I hear this version the more that I like it.

  • I have wonderful vinyl of Brand X from 75 and 77 (Unorthodox Behavior & Moroccan Roll). The band featured Phil Collins (also working in Genesis at that time) and Percy Jones, an amazing bass player. I thought this MO cover was kind of weak, but they were capable of true greatness. Check out Disco Suicide.

  • Brand X??? Phill Collins,etc..

  • brand x has been around for about 30 years-they ain't bad at all

  • wheres the violin???

  • the guitar solo was great, definitely worked with the song

  • well, i can't say they didn't try, but i assume Brand-X would not be the slightest bit insulted if they were told this doesn't hold even a spark to the original mahavishnu :) but.... not everyone has the balls to attempt this composition let alone perform it, so MUCH RESPECT YALL.

  • Check out the Mahavishnu Project is you haven't already heard them.

  • the same question: who the hell is is brand X? and in what style do they play?

  • Brand X was a side project of Phil Collins in late seventies playing jazz/rock - guitar based. Continued on and off until late nineties. They made a series of superb albums and cite Mahavishnu orchestra as one of their influences.

  • billy cobham is not present

  • who the f---- is brand X!!!!!!

  • I give brand X credit for playing the music of one best fusion groups ever and sounding decent. Most groups would not attempt the musical suicide of playing anything MAHA. Brand X has great musicians and still there were some minor difficulties in playing BOF. A tribute to JM and the MO.

  • Obviously the sound quality is bad, and Brand X can do far better. However, for any band to attempt "Birds of Fire", they have my full respect

  • the firt solo on the original recording is jan hammer on moog, not a guitar besides this guy is just pretty good, they sound like music school students, i give them a D-

  • the first solo on the song birds of fire from the birds of fire album is not jan hammer...its john. the guy in the video takes a few quotes(however misspoken in my opinion) from johns solo, then starts quoting jans solo(the second) then goes back to quoting john...he did nail that ascending bridge lick though...props for that

  • This is very bad.

  • THIS DOES NOT REPRESENT BRAND X!

You idiots think you can judge the great Brand X on a crappy camcorder sneaked into a Japan gig where the sound mixers were testing their equipment.Listen to the channels switching in and out!Sound quality is atrocious.Whoever posts these clips should be shot. You insects can't spontaneously jam on a McLaughlin riff like that.

Why do you think Brand X are up there & you fools are wherever the hell you will remain.

    MySpace/JohnGoodsall has the real thing.

  • I am respectfully bowing out of this discussion. I honestly did not believe that this was Brand X in part due to the stationery camera and also, as you say, the shoddy sound quality but also because I expected a more inspired send-up of guitar improv from John Goodsall for whom I have the greatest respect. Oh and...by the way I CAN spontaneously jam on that riff... so that would be Mr. Insect to you.

  • Ok mr insect prove it

  • Well said

  • If anyone wants to hear the original Mhavishnu orchestra doing a live verison of "birds of fire" in 1973 , you can hear it on the website - JAZZFUSION(dot)TV ,(no dot com). Click onto AUDIO BOOTLEGS , there is amazing list of concerts that can be played or downloaded. The MAHVISHNU 1973 TORONTO CONCERT starts with great long version of Birds of fire which then goes straight into "Hope'. Lots more Mahvishnu concerts there also.

  • There is much better quality 1973 Mahavishnu concert recordings on website WOLFGANGSVAULT(dot)COM . 18 Mahavishnu concerts there now which include several versions of Birds of fire . Taken from master tapes from professional recordings of these concerts.

  • If these guys want to play this song better they need to relax.

  • if this were more relaxed, , , it would be asleep! what the hell can you mean?

  • Relaxation isn't felt in the tempo; it is an absence of tension in the notes, between the notes, and around them. Specifically, the first and last notes of the opening passage are stressed equally, leaving the middle ones flaccid. Moreover, on the point of stressing notes, everything in the solo is attacked with equal force. There is no differentiation. That is the only thing wrong with this cover. The transcription is beautiful, and the players follow each other very well.

  • a real musician knows the hours, not minutes it took to get this version this close.try sitting down with the song and nailing the guitar solo yourself.then post the video.

  • To the naysayers. Yeah, not like off the original LP but what the hell do you expect?

How many groups would even ATTEMPT this song?

Goodsall is filling in for McGlaughlin AND Goodman. Think they did a pretty nice job.

    Could you pull it off?

  • I saw it done live 2x in 72-73. I know it very well. The guitar sound and playing is especially disturbing. The other musicians are playing it poorly. It's s dead corpse.

  • This is very bad. Poor in sound and execution.

  • If you're familiar with this tune, it's supposed to have a rather loose feel. Granted, not as nice as Mahavishnu, but you have to give them credit for doing it at all.

  • agreed. and it was not all that bad. it even had a little swing for o moment.

even if i was ready to play this myself sometime in the future, i'll never be able to find a drummer, a keyboardist, and a base player to do it with. so, thumbs up for these guys

  • silly conception a-la Don Sebesky arrangement on CTI with McLaughlin, poor Stravinsky... :(

  • @mungo10: sensationell site, wonderful

  • Fuck yeah, what a great song to do!!!! I love Robin's ripping syth. solo. Very cool!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. BTW, If you go the Brand X web site, you can hear an exceprt of their performing the Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Lila's Dance".

  • thanx for info

  • Pretty damn close cover. A lttle slow in getting going in the intro. But after listening to the whole song, I attribute that to their drummer. But being one myself, I still cut this guy some slack. Whereas trying to keep up with Billy Cobham is virtually impossible. Nice job Brand X.

  • Brand X doing a Mahavishnu classic... nice!

  • You can easily find Mahavishnu Orchestra also on MySpace ... what u cannot find around is Brand X from the 70th ... to have them from 1997 is a sort of miracle (for now i hope ^^)

  • Oh this is a cover...no doubt its very good, i just would like to see ,,birds of fire'' by Mahavishnu orchestra, theres no video on youtube, dont get me wrong still GODLIKE

  • I think this is the only cover song Brand X did , goes to show how much influence Mahavishnu was on them. Handaxl , there is Montreaux concert dvd of mahavishnu coming out next month . There is version of "one word" here on Youtube.
