@mantra3000 Derek Forbes told me, "Brian McGee is the one and only original drummer [of Simple Minds]." But that doesn't answer your question as to who is the drummer here.
Ciao, Andrea
Early Simple Minds is like early Cure and early U@, MARSway better than their newer stuff..As with all grat bands their always best in their earlier years without the F. commercial influences. :)
Its good that people have different taste (s?) . Sorry for my poor english. Wont get any better.
When i was young u2 was my favorit band of all, but nowadays while im rediscovering older and better stuff from bands via internet like The CVure, Simple minds and bands like human league depeche mode are the bands i like more nowadays, although i still like the older stuff from u2 and i have much respect how they still go on and on like the stones with modern new stylish music.
Don't feel bad. I was 10 years old back in 1982 and I remember seeing Love Song on MuchMusic here in Canada. I wasn't into them myself. I've been a Minds fan now since 1992. :)
Never to late. The late 70's, early 80's was a magical time for music. Back then we had bands with distinct sounds - Simple Minds, Joy Division, U2 (long ago when they weren't boring), Adam and the Ants, Echo and the Bunnymen, The The, The Police, just to name a few.
Today's mainstream music is interchangeable and monotonous to me. And don't get me started on Hip Hop - the most nihilistic, narcissistic, and mindless genre ever created.
@troubleontheline66 Good post. I completely agree with your sentiments. Well except for Adam and the Ants. :-) I would also add The Alarm, Big Country, The Church, The Chameleons, and early REM to that list. Cheers
@Nigelxman - Big Country is one of my fave bands from that time, and I think they made great music right up to the sad ending.
Adam and the Ants aren't for everyone, but they were original. Listen to the Dirk Wears White Sox album, or songs like Killer in the Home and Pablo Picaso Visits the Planet of the Apes.
I think Tears For Fears' The Hurting was one of the most ground-breaking albums of that time.
I could list a ton of great bands. The ones you mentioned were great.
I saw this live performance on German television years ago and never forgot it. Thank you so much, DexBam!
I have Empires and Dance but that studio version of "Room" does not excite. This live version is superbe. Hear Charlie excel and listen to the improviations of the drummer.
I really don't understand why Simple Minds don't release more live albums. And maybe with some old songs on it, like Room. Would buy it instantly and think that many fans of my age would do the same thing too...
Great stuff! "Room" changed so much from 1979-1982. Strange really. Its almost as if they didn't know what to do with it. You can tell that the studio version on "Empiers & dance" was tagged on at the end. Its different from the other songs on that album.
Actually, Room does have a place on the album- in that the song is about the protagonist being back home and feeling safe after being in several terrifying places in Europe. But it also hints at a darkness similar to that of Real To Real Cacophony, which makes sense as the song was written very shortly after the release of that album.
This live version is fantastic, and proof the band were at the peak of their powers in this era. They changed the tune a lot but it's still recognisable.
Thank for sharing these lovely Simple Minds versions, you are the best!!! Just been to see them in Palermo, great show, was my third time, but they are like wine, getting older getting better.
No amount of remastering will make up for the fact that the guy doing the monitors ( what the band hears, or in this case doesn't hear. ) is rubbish. How they stayed in tune I don't know.
If the sound onstage is rubbish, then no matter how much money you chuck at the sound the audience hears, the result will be this sort of almost but not quite performance.
1985 in a park in Sweden the Minds did it like it should be and I'm sure nobody there had ever felt anything like that in their lives.

Blegh... The disco glam and sex-version of one of the best songs on Empires and Dance! Terrible. This must be the very real beginning of commercial and pathetic Simple Minds, after having made 5 of the best albums ever.
It's true that this 'rocks out' somewhat but the delicate nuances of the album version would not carry in a stadium this size. This, then is probably the defining moment that they lost their Sparkle and became anthem rockers. A poor substitute to their previous unwordly genius: the world embraced them and they paid the price.
If they'd never done Don't You Forget About Me, they'd probably still be a cult band along with Joy Division and Magazine. But they're rarely listed amongst them because they sold out. Real Life is where their career got into the ground, and they were pretty much forgotten during the 90s. Their latest album, Graffiti Soul, is really good, and it's best track, This Is It, is a true return to form and could easily have been on Sons And Fascination.
Dexbam.. Thanks for the Memorys ..Loved the Kerr Burchil Macneil Forbes Era .. Where did that wonderful base sound Go... Still Love the Minds ..Been a Follower since 79..Last Gig i went to see was Manchester 2008
Yeah, million thanks indeed. This video was pulled out of You Tube for a long time. Glad to see it back. The best version of Room as far as I know. Jim looks so good and the music is haunting.
Has anyone else notice the reverb on Jim Kerr?

@Nigelxman : "Early" is often the best, in pop-rock-new wave groups, say the most intense. See Cocteau Twins' "Garlands" album !..

This song was written late 1979. No other Simple Minds songs developed so much. This sounds nothing like the studio version.
