  • Hey, very nice! Great minds think alike, I made one very similar to yours (same start/stop motion) check out "promenade" at my channel.

It would be nice to chat some time.

  • @magnifax I like your matchstick people. Do you use a strobe light or some other mechanism for stop motion? You can see other versions of this effect on my channel (see the video 'Human Race'). Have you tried any 3D printing yet?

  • Thanks. There is no strobe or any other lighting effects. I have a similar mechanism to you that rapidly starts and stops the animation frames. It was super difficult to record (due to jutter) so I simulated it for the video with stop motion by rotating one frame at a time and taking a shot. I'm sure that like yours, it's much more beautiful in person. Yes, I have done some 3D printing mostly as experiments but I have some animations in the works - check out "fountain" and "fountain 2"

  • Are you using an involute curve profile? And the other laws of gearing? Looks very cool, but it is clacking too much imo. Don't get angry at me :)

  • @Alias828 It's a stop-motion advance mechanism I dream't up. It actually starts & stops 15 times per rev. I call it a 'Z' gear -50% of the duty cycle is advance (by one figure-frame) and 50% is stop (x15). This eliminates the need for strobe lights or slats. You can see an early prototype - see the video 'Human Race' - on my youtube channel. The clacking is part of the effect & adds to the aesthetic. I plan to have the smaller 'mini' version for sale soon @ shapeways. Hope this explains.

  • Ingenious !

  • 3D Zoetrope amirite? Fantastic design, I'm assuming it's all basically from scratch, if so you have great skill with mechanical visualization.

  • @neotoy - I'm new at youtube - I'm trying to respond. This is the first prototype - 3D printed.

  • @neotoy - yes, it is a zoetrobe. I call it 4D because the figures are already 3D. Add time and you have the fourth dimension. It is my own creation.

  • Fabulous! I want one!! ;-)
