Tapping in general/ multi-finger right handed tapping is by no means genius. Its been done countless times. A lot of the newer teen bands should probably stop using it as a "we're experimental" excuse. There's nothing experimental about doing things that have already been done before.

Tool sucks because their music is totally unrelated to genuine original thought. Songs using strange structures or time signatures - for what purpose? A song based on the Fibonacci sequence - for what purpose? It's soulless music, 10th-grader emotions, using pseudo-intellectual means to pretend that it's something deeper. They've never written anything more meaningful or original than some shitty NIN song.

I can name 20 bands using drums/bass as lead instruments. Ain't that original.

But you're a great example of why I hate Tool fans. You think their music is incredible because they use odd time signatures, because they're "weird." It's like saying "this is the best meal I've ever had because the plate is square instead of round."

People don't hate Tool because they "don't get them." People hate Tool because they do get them, and they understand how weak and trite they are conceptually.

Actually the reason I like Tool has nothing to do with odd time signatures - I can just get past the fact that it's not 4/4 unlike you. And your comparison is asinine because the time signature is a key component to the rhythm which influences the feel of the song.

What I'm saying is simple -if you say "I don't like Tool, they aren't my style", Im completely fine with that... when you say they suck and are weak, I have you believe you are an idiot, any musician would tell you they are talented

Actually classical music did have a purpose, the history of western music started off in church, as hymns and such, and as the words were removed 'classical music' slowly became secular. Then it became entertainment for the bourgeoisie.

A friend of mine puts up with Hella, Zach Hill's solo record, and Cryptomnesia (all with very-ing degrees of success (and Yes I realize the drummer here isn't Zach)), but he just can not stand Marnie Stern. I guess her voice and staccato style can be a turn off to some.

If you are a musician, you can like, love or hate a band, but because you know composing and playing skills, you can evaluate based on that , just like a painting or something.. Art is all the same.. you can like or dislike, but when you understand the skill behind it, you can say if its good or not.

Majority of good indie bands have mediocre guitarists. "Band sounds like a high school band" is subjective. Bands like Tool have incredible guitarists, and they don't sound like high school bands, but they're awful.

I'd like to hear your top 5 bands if you think Tool is 'awful'... They actually have the balls to use bass and drums as lead instruments instead of as backing to a guitar. Not to mention Danny Carey is probably the best current rock drummer.

As for Marnie, yes her live performances aren't that tight, but her music is still unique and creative. That's what I want to hear when I listen to music. If it sounds identical to something else, it's not original.
