This speech is perhaps the most inspirating thing I've heard.
Maybe democracy will come when all people are free to do whatever they want.Maybe democracy will come when they will learn that the future is up to them.NOT their governments.
I find it funny that Hitler banned Charlie Chaplin films in Germany after seeing this. Of course the film which was released in 1940 was satirizing Adolf Hitler and Nazism.
@Pr3cUr5oR There is no need for sarcasm friend. I merely brought up this topic up because I did not see any topics about it on the comment's board. By the way, Hitler's central reason for anger was not that The Great Dictator mocked Nazism or dictators. It was because Chaplin favored him too much!
"Let us fight for a decent world...a world that will give youth a future, men a chance to work, and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power....but they lie..they do not fulfill that promise...and they never will...rulers free themselves, but they enslave the people..."
"millions of despairing men, women and little children...victims of a system that makes men torture(gtmo bay, abu graib), and imprison innocent people" (2,000,000 in american jails, more than any country on earth)......
"GREED HAS POISONED MENS SOULS"
In "gratitude" for his miraculous contributions, the american empire expelled this great man.
I saw this film as a young boy, in the early 1970s. I wasn't able to understand any of it other than the physical comedy. Seeing it today was like seeing it for the first time. What a touching
picture. Chaplin certainly had a lot of guts to produce, direct, and act in it. The speech at the end was his legacy. Here's to this film enduring forever.
Love that you uploaded it, seeing as a video of Chaplin's speech in the climax intrigued me so much I decided to see if the whole movie was available here on YouTube. Still, the whole copyright issue concerns me.
I've never seen this masterpiece so clearly!!!! Thank you soooo much!
At first I thought the sound was too slow, but I do believe now that the MK2 version was sped up slightly....and that THIS is the proper speed...it is like seeing it for the first time!
About the chaplin's speech at the end: it's true, we humans should rise above our hatred, aggression, violence, greed, jealousy, and all our destructive instincts in order to live peacefully among each other. peace on earth is only possible if all of us achieve such higher mentality and understanding.
This was a fantastic film. Near the end, during the speech, I felt a bit lost due to his lack of character but his passion and it's simply amazing. I love how much humor they incorporated into the film, leaving no prolonged drama at least until the end. Fantastic film.
@alanbstard4 Actually propaganda means "Information, esp. of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view."
I still don't understand what you're trying to say. The Great Dictator is telling a lie on.. What exactly?
@alanbstard4 Propaganda isn't always a lie. A poster saying, for instance, "Canada needs strong men NOW to fight the Facist INVADERS! - Sign up before they invade YOUR home!" isn't a lie, it's just stupid.
@marija1971 My theory from this video's comments? People are naive, and David Duke wanted to make a quick buck. So one thing led to another, and people now believe Charlie Chaplin is part is some zionist conspiracy to take over the world and exterminate 90% of the population they worship Satan.
No, seriously... I'm not kidding you. They actually believe that!
Course, even in the world of conspiracy theories, it's ridiculous considering Charlie Chaplin has no ties to Bilderberg.
@RolyatDerTeufel It could become reality if Ron Paul became president. He's the only notable one in America who carries the beacon of Charlie Chaplin's message of peace.
I've always been a Charlie Chaplin fan, but have only seen bits and pieces of "The Great Dictator" until now, so it is much appreciated, thanks! While I was watching Charlie in this "talky" movie, he really started to remind me of Mike Myers. They even look very similar. I guess he was the Mike Myers of his time and Mike Myers is the Charlie Chaplin of our time. Thanks again.
Thank you for posting. I never had the chance to see this film before. It is a powerful film.
The one thing that threw me off was that they put Mussolini in the role of Stalin. If Austerlitz is supposed to be Poland, then "Napoloni" should be Stalin, not Il Duce.
For many years I have wrong about what thi s film was like I had a vague impression of what it was like, that Charlie Chaplin impersonated an Adolf Hitler character now I see that it is "must watch" film. I was drawn to it because of the you Tube clip I saw a few days ago. I wondered if it was really his words from the film because I found them very moving, I thought they must be adopted to go with the film footage. I was pleasantly surprised to find that is exactly the same in the film
Thank you for uploading this! Charlie did a beautiful job as always; even his dictator was "scary"! Nice to also see him in the Tramp costume one last time, even though the barber was not called that (the "Tramp" could never speak, Chaplin said).
The last speech of this movie is so powerful and meaningful.
I don't think people truly knew how right he was.
"Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance!"
ahem *cough cough*.... wow
