@TheDragonLake it wasnt banned, they still have match races, like the stupid one between mike smith and chantelle sutherland, but this WAS the last match race between thoroughbred CHAMPIONS. this match race, is most likely the reason they didnt have a match race between rachel and zenyatta

@tonto4ever1 that chances of a horse surviving with 1 broken leg is very slim due to laminitis. Ruffian's whole lower leg was just dangling there, comepletly shattered. The chances of a horse surviving 2 broken legs: impossible.
I didn't stop crying from the moment she broke her leg, till a hour after the movie stopped. I am always so so afraid that any beautiful animal would be hurt like this. I went out, and drove 20 minutes to go and see my pony

I cried more than i did when i saw "Jag saknar dig" <-- (I miss you). It's a swedish movie about two twins who realy are one. Then .. when they have to rush to school and over a road called "The road of death" one of them get hited by a car .. and now the other has to live by herself. That's also a real life story and so freaking sad, but i cried more in this move cause .. i know how it feels ..

She had a good life doing what she loved and when she went she went running. Ruffian completed the hardest race of all and she won it with only a few bumps in the road. Ruffian you entered life with many prepossess to bring joy to the hearts of others and to be the best racer of all time.
All i have to say is they race these horses way too young! And when they are too young the bones arent developed all the way therefore they do things like Ruffian did.

I have watched this movie several times and I STILL bawl at the end. Somehow when she thinks she's still running I always remember that racing isn't just what they are trained for so us people can be entertained, it's a way of living, the horse has a heart for running. Running is all they know, it is like a baby blanket to them. Racing is a part of them that will never go away. R.I.P Ruffian greatest racehorse known to mankind ♥

This is a fantastic job CrescentMoonRanch, I have a Hall of Fame relative that is still a driver in Harness Racing and have owned horses myself. Love the job you did. I need to say no more.
in australia we have a filly 13/0 as yet untested.BLACK CAVIAR no1 rated sprinter in the world. she draws a crowd where ever she goes.soon she'll be heading oversees ,if u get a chance to see her race,do it.

This is the first and one of the very few movies that ever made me cry. The moment that I saw the leg break, silent tears started rolling down my eyes. This and Seabiscuit are the only two racing movies that I can stand to watch because they capture how brutal and yet beautiful racing is. Most horse racing movies are those cheesy, "chase your dreams" movies that we see enough of on Disney Channel. It's a pity that the incredible Secretariat didn't get a movie of such high quality.
@2138red Queens pass on their legacies, and Zenyatta is the legacy of Ruffian. if there had never been a Ruffian, we would not have appreciated as Zenyatta as much as we have. and now we have the current Queen passing along to her young her heart and speed, we hope.
@LadyDeerskin i think that they are both amazing, in there own different ways. But to me Ruffian will always be queen. another thing is that if Ruffian had never been such an amazing filly then Zenyatta or RA would have been an even bigger deal then what they are, because we wouldnt have Ruffian to compare them with.

Its about a horse they named Temporary Storm, and she looks exactly like Ruffian, but she has a bad past with an owner, who just left her at a sales barn. Whitely found her, and started to train her, but she eventually goes blind. Whitely chooses not to put her down, and begins the process of retraining her.
Its the sad story about a horse, and her fight for love, freedom and dominance
I don't understand why this movie isn't as famous as Secretariat, i bet it is because Secretariat is a Disney movie. This movie is much better than Secretariat, the races looked really good in that movie but thats it. The rest was stupid and corny and if it wasn't a Disney movie it would have been much better.
I think this movie is a lot better but yet many people don't even know it exists.
@Cherryblossum09 I don't think anyone could have made a good dramatic movie about Secretariat. A real winner through and through, no hardship (Seabiscuit), no tragedy (poor Ruffian). Lots of excitement on the track, no drama off of it. As for "Secretariat" being the more well known movie it's probably because it was a theatrical release from a major studio. I'm glad at least ESPN made this film about Ruffian; she deserves it and they did her proud.
Disney is Disney, unfortunatly a lot of people seem to still have the perception that Disney=Greatest movies out there. Besides that, they have the money to advertise and the know how to not only get their ads on the stations where people who would want to see such movies would see it, but the money to get those on ads on all of those stations.
If I hadn't come to YT, I wouldn't even know this movie exists.
She set awesome records in her time and she was the fastest most beautiful horse out on the field. I want to go visit her grave now it was soo sad. If you guys like this movie you should read the books thoroughbred the series. It is about horses, racing, and life you will love it!!!!
Ruffian is a beautiful film. I cried as I watched (but seriously). Too bad that her legs could not be saved, I wanted it to be otherwise. She won many races at the beginning when it looked as'running' I thought he wanted to compete in the race but it was not. sad view for me it was like her in these blankets covered their shame to me that it was a really good filly, sports ... the should have given here a tranqilizer when she began running on the mat and they also should have had her slung up by some contraption and this movie is wrong in saying she broke her other leg she actuallly re broke that leg and she wouldent have gone peacfully
@IloveBEAUTYandMum That's why they have recovery pools now, because of what happened to Ruffian. You got to remember that this was 36 years ago when this happened, and the medical technology for horses wasn't the same as it is today. And she did break her other leg as well as re-injure her first one. She shattered her elbow by knocking the cast against it, then the cast slipped off which undid the surgery.
When I think about it now, it didn't matter i Ruffian was first or not, it only mattered if shw made it safely to the finish. Even if she lost, she would still have been the second best horse!
I cried like hell! I never knew there was a horse called Ruffian. I'm very disappointed with myself, but now Ruffian will always remain in my heart... Rest In Peace Ruffian...
@tomboy4always i had the same problem with my horse, he kept hurting himself until he wouldnt heal his wounds, and he would limp his way to greener pastures, he had tears in his eyes when i said good bye to him.....i loved him......so much.

Timely Writer was bought for only $13,500 by the owners of meat-packing company in Boston, Peter and Francis Martin. He went from a claiming race to nearly being named Two-Year Old Champion, to being an early favorite for the Triple Crown Races in 1982. He missed the races, nearly dying of colic, only to come back and start winning in the fall. Seeing him go down in the 1982 Jockey Club Gold Cup change me; I never let myself fall in love with another race horse.
This was a good movie until, of all things, the post-script. First, not seeing "the likes of Ruffian again" can be take different ways, but Forego had the greatest racing career I have had the chance to personally witness (I'm post Kelso and Dr. Fager). The movie is about Ruffian so, though a little irritating, I can let it go. But the second point I can't forgive; Timely Writer is buried at Belmont.
When they say "the likes of Ruffian again" they meant her spirit... Forego was a great horse, but only Ruffian had that fire, that natural speed to go and stay on lead with ease... When you watch her run you can't help but have that feeling that no matter what she would find a way to dig dipper and ran away... We never saw her run her highest gear... Second, they said champion... Timely Writer because of his faith didn't win anything unfortunately...

Timely Writer went into the classics off of victories in the Hopeful, Champagne, Flamingo, and Florida Derby - I saw his whole career including his death in the 1982 Jockey Club Gold Cup, just as I did with Ruffian when she broke down in the match race against Foolish Pleasure in 1975. The best 3yr old I saw in 1975 wasn't Ruffian or Foolish Pleasure, it was Wajima.
this is why i'm against horse racing.its a selfish sport putting immense pressure on undeveloped legs. Ruffian would still be alive if it wasn't for racing.
@horseracergirl stehre are many ways to improve the sport. one way would be to make it mandatory that only mature horses can race.do you realize how dangerous and how many injuries these horses receive?
there are many ways to have a happy and healthy horse.ex. there are pastures for horses to run in to their hearts content. if you truly cared for their lives, you would understand. I know i wouldn't want a 8 ur old kid running/racing as much a RH do. its bad for their joints.
@TheUltimateSmile I used to exercise race horses. I know the stress it puts on their joints. The one thing I wish american racing would change is the turf. We need artificial. Dirt doesn't do well to absorb impact and shock. The artificial stuff is much better. It works in Canada, it can work here.
Never the less, these horses love to run. You can agree or disagree with that statement, but it's true, and you can only understand that if you've ridden one.
@equinizeyourlife i never said i dont believe they love to run. but humans need to learn the limit. your risking your young horses' life Evey time they race. if people go behind the scenes and follow what happens to many ottb maybe the will show more concern, but most chose to live in ignorance.

Makes me think she was fast but maybe not suitable for racing? At the start of the movie there seemed to be a problem with her hind limb after running too fast. Maybe she had some kind of genetic brittle/soft bone condition? If that was the case then a test should have been done before induldging into such a competitive race. Then this wouldn't have happened, she died WAY too young for a horse...

She had a good life doing what she loved and when she went she went running. Ruffian completed the hardest race of all and she won it with only a few bumps in the road. Ruffian you entered life with many prepossess to bring joy to the hearts of others and to be the best racer of all time.

All i have to say is they race these horses way too young! And when they are too young the bones arent developed all the way therefore they do things like Ruffian did.

I have watched this movie several times and I STILL bawl at the end. Somehow when she thinks she's still running I always remember that racing isn't just what they are trained for so us people can be entertained, it's a way of living, the horse has a heart for running. Running is all they know, it is like a baby blanket to them. Racing is a part of them that will never go away. R.I.P Ruffian greatest racehorse known to mankind ♥

This is the first and one of the very few movies that ever made me cry. The moment that I saw the leg break, silent tears started rolling down my eyes. This and Seabiscuit are the only two racing movies that I can stand to watch because they capture how brutal and yet beautiful racing is. Most horse racing movies are those cheesy, "chase your dreams" movies that we see enough of on Disney Channel. It's a pity that the incredible Secretariat didn't get a movie of such high quality.

@2138red Queens pass on their legacies, and Zenyatta is the legacy of Ruffian. if there had never been a Ruffian, we would not have appreciated as Zenyatta as much as we have. and now we have the current Queen passing along to her young her heart and speed, we hope.

But to me Ruffian will always be queen. another thing is that if Ruffian had never been such an amazing filly then Zenyatta or RA would have been an even bigger deal then what they are, because we wouldnt have Ruffian to compare them with.

thats not a real horse, its my made-up one, in a story im writing...
Its about a horse they named Temporary Storm, and she looks exactly like Ruffian, but she has a bad past with an owner, who just left her at a sales barn. Whitely found her, and started to train her, but she eventually goes blind. Whitely chooses not to put her down, and begins the process of retraining her.
Its the sad story about a horse, and her fight for love, freedom and dominance

I don't understand why this movie isn't as famous as Secretariat, i bet it is because Secretariat is a Disney movie. This movie is much better than Secretariat, the races looked really good in that movie but thats it. The rest was stupid and corny and if it wasn't a Disney movie it would have been much better.
I think this movie is a lot better but yet many people don't even know it exists.

@Cherryblossum09 I don't think anyone could have made a good dramatic movie about Secretariat. A real winner through and through, no hardship (Seabiscuit), no tragedy (poor Ruffian). Lots of excitement on the track, no drama off of it. As for "Secretariat" being the more well known movie it's probably because it was a theatrical release from a major studio. I'm glad at least ESPN made this film about Ruffian; she deserves it and they did her proud.

Disney is Disney, unfortunatly a lot of people seem to still have the perception that Disney=Greatest movies out there. Besides that, they have the money to advertise and the know how to not only get their ads on the stations where people who would want to see such movies would see it, but the money to get those on ads on all of those stations.
If I hadn't come to YT, I wouldn't even know this movie exists.

Ruffian is a beautiful film. I cried as I watched (but seriously). Too bad that her legs could not be saved, I wanted it to be otherwise. She won many races at the beginning when it looked as'running' I thought he wanted to compete in the race but it was not. sad view for me it was like her in these blankets covered their shame to me that it was a really good filly, sports ... the should have given here a tranqilizer when she began running on the mat and they also should have had her slung up by some contraption and this movie is wrong in saying she broke her other leg she actuallly re broke that leg and she wouldent have gone peacfully

@IloveBEAUTYandMum That's why they have recovery pools now, because of what happened to Ruffian. You got to remember that this was 36 years ago when this happened, and the medical technology for horses wasn't the same as it is today. And she did break her other leg as well as re-injure her first one. She shattered her elbow by knocking the cast against it, then the cast slipped off which undid the surgery.

When I think about it now, it didn't matter i Ruffian was first or not, it only mattered if shw made it safely to the finish. Even if she lost, she would still have been the second best horse!

@tomboy4always i had the same problem with my horse, he kept hurting himself until he wouldnt heal his wounds, and he would limp his way to greener pastures, he had tears in his eyes when i said good bye to him.....i loved him......so much.

Timely Writer was bought for only $13,500 by the owners of meat-packing company in Boston, Peter and Francis Martin. He went from a claiming race to nearly being named Two-Year Old Champion, to being an early favorite for the Triple Crown Races in 1982. He missed the races, nearly dying of colic, only to come back and start winning in the fall. Seeing him go down in the 1982 Jockey Club Gold Cup change me; I never let myself fall in love with another race horse.

This was a good movie until, of all things, the post-script. First, not seeing "the likes of Ruffian again" can be take different ways, but Forego had the greatest racing career I have had the chance to personally witness (I'm post Kelso and Dr. Fager). The movie is about Ruffian so, though a little irritating, I can let it go. But the second point I can't forgive; Timely Writer is buried at Belmont.

When they say "the likes of Ruffian again" they meant her spirit... Forego was a great horse, but only Ruffian had that fire, that natural speed to go and stay on lead with ease... When you watch her run you can't help but have that feeling that no matter what she would find a way to dig dipper and ran away... We never saw her run her highest gear... Second, they said champion... Timely Writer because of his faith didn't win anything unfortunately...

Timely Writer went into the classics off of victories in the Hopeful, Champagne, Flamingo, and Florida Derby - I saw his whole career including his death in the 1982 Jockey Club Gold Cup, just as I did with Ruffian when she broke down in the match race against Foolish Pleasure in 1975. The best 3yr old I saw in 1975 wasn't Ruffian or Foolish Pleasure, it was Wajima.

@horseracergirl stehre are many ways to improve the sport. one way would be to make it mandatory that only mature horses can race.do you realize how dangerous and how many injuries these horses receive?
there are many ways to have a happy and healthy horse.ex. there are pastures for horses to run in to their hearts content. if you truly cared for their lives, you would understand. I know i wouldn't want a 8 ur old kid running/racing as much a RH do. its bad for their joints.

@TheUltimateSmile I used to exercise race horses. I know the stress it puts on their joints. The one thing I wish american racing would change is the turf. We need artificial. Dirt doesn't do well to absorb impact and shock. The artificial stuff is much better. It works in Canada, it can work here.
Never the less, these horses love to run. You can agree or disagree with that statement, but it's true, and you can only understand that if you've ridden one.

Makes me think she was fast but maybe not suitable for racing? At the start of the movie there seemed to be a problem with her hind limb after running too fast. Maybe she had some kind of genetic brittle/soft bone condition? If that was the case then a test should have been done before induldging into such a competitive race. Then this wouldn't have happened, she died WAY too young for a horse...
