I haven't been there for 29 years I go when I hit the lotto and not my first destination. Only going back for fresh durane and meet some of my relatives.
@steveUKok I totally agree with you. Although for $1.00 US he got way more for his money than he would've in the States. Street meat in NY is at least $2.00.
I felt it was more expensive in cambodia then the US and the things they sell are fake. i can buy things cheaper in thailand and they have the prices on everything. even food cost less in thailand. i dont like to get ripped off and i would not want to go back either.
First, they let him pay more since he is a foreigner; secondly, he wanted to pay more to make his mission more dramatic; thirdly, he didn`t show us all food, he just held up single items to make it look more scarce; fourth, he didn`t tellus anything about subsistence economy, like fruits in the gardens you own.
i bought all the children in my grandmother's village ice cream for less than two dollars & you can buy a little snack sized bag of clams for about 400 riel as well.
also bigbananadave's top tip of the day. Learn these basic phrases in the countries language that you are visiting. use them when talking to a local and they'll seem a lot more friendly and they'll think you've been in the country for a while. so less inclined to rip you off.
-Hello
-Thank you
and the best phrase you could use -Too Expensive
use these in the local tongue and you'll have a easyer and better time abroad!
dudes gotta learn how to haggle! rule of thumb for visiting SE Asia, when shopping at the market if your 'barang' they'll charge you double what a local pays. start haggling at half that price, the seller will smile and politely decline offering a discount of 10% off. you then suggest you pay 60%.
Keep haggling until you both agree on around 75% of original price. You'll still be paying more than a local but what the hell, you just bought $1 of food that would normally cost you $10 back home.
Does he really think he's going to get the same prices as the locals get? When they see your white skin they will automatically think "tourist"! Of course they will charge you more.
You may get slightly more food for 1 dollar in Cambodia than in US, but if you wanna buy, say, a computer or digital camera the situation is just the opposite. I just mention this for completeness.
@sparkl1nwat3r Bargaining in south asia is normal, people do it every day for food, taxis, services, products, whatever. And the whole 'experiment' was to see how much food he could get for 4,000 rial anyways..
Its time for a change! New leader, New party, New laws and amendments, New Union laws, Restructure the courts and police, Fix wages and hours, Land protection, Nationalism, Invest in education, Job creation, Economic diversity, Capitalism, New relations to foreign nations. Protect biodiversity, International trade, Stop corruption, Protect culture, Protect constitution, Protect our sovereignty, Protect the Riel, Protect farmers, Lower Poverty rate
LOL!! Christopher is so cute in a way! The way he went and bought all those stuff really makes me want to give him a hug in a sense! He seemed pretty nice about it though...
Yeah for sure that you can spend only one dollar in Cambodia but you also deserve the only those small amount of food just like eggs, rice .. like that.
how about fresh beef, pock, Chicken? and you also said those are also too much for you too.
See?
Go to shop in supermarkets in Cambodia and wait to see if you can spend a dollar. :)
i think you done well with your dollar, although for the locals they buy in smaller amounts and their money doesn't come everyday so whenever they get paid they will buy food then stretch that out to so many days thats how they calculate how much they spend in a day
Funny to see it. Its not true that tourists or "white" people always pay more. At some places with some sellers - yes! But its everywhere on the world. Khmer coffes is 50 cents, baguettes12 cent, a lot of delicious khmer sweets. starts from 10 cent piece. Fruits are cheap. Mangos 1 kg is 75 cents - how much you pay in your land? Dish Rice w meat/ fish 1,- $, Soup start at 50 cent, Tuktuk in PP is 1,5 - 2 $, but you can use mototaxi is 50 cent/1 $ but more better is walking to see more
Yeah sure you got so many stuff for a dollar, but you've forgotten it also takes a dollar to ride the public motorcycle going to the market. The tuk-tuk costs 5 dollars for a ride inside Phnom Penh when I was there March 2011.
If he really wanted to know whats available for 1 dollar he would get an khemer person to go shopping with the dollar. Of course they would get it cheaper.
@OKlikeoaktree Yeah I am also that way too. With what I think can be the most novel thing to say about something and it backfires in my face out of proportion.Although I agree with you on the video where this guy is showing a one sided representation of what you can get with one dollar in Cambodia. I am already planning for a trip next year possibly for April!
Hey guys, so the main currency using in Cambodia is Dollar instead of Riel? Hows the Khmer behave? Will they like Indonesian where the kids begging money on the street? Furthermore, i'm now struggling with the Travel Visa application as i'm confusing which provider should i applied mine as an Australian? Did anyone try evisaasia? I found out there's lot of information about travel visa but not sure whether is reliable or nope. Please advise.
KHmer people like to rip Americans/ Foreigners offf I mean yea they have money but this wasn't a really good representation of how much a khmer person could get with one dollar. A khmer individual could probably get more for one dollar!
@OKlikeoaktree Don't be putting my people down! Everyone in general is trying to rip everyone!!Just because you only saw this video that just doesn't represent us that way. Whether your the seller or the customer buying the goods...that is just how business transactions go!
Im Cambodian but I live in Australia. They can still tell Im foreign usually by the clothes I wear etc. my advice is if you have to haggle, get a friend/family member someones whose local to do it for you.
Of course he will get charged more. My wife is Cambodian and at the markets I pick out what I like and walk away. Then my wife will go to the vendor and get it for me. Its understandable that Americans are charged more and I respect that. They deserve as much as they can get but being married to a Cambodian she wouldny be happy if I paid $10 dollars say on a Cambodian shirt when she could buy it for $2.
Based on my experience, locals will definitively pay lower prices and fish is the cheapest protein. Being a white western foreigner, these people look at me and know that just the plane ticket from Canada is over a $1000, so why not try to make a little extra, it's not like they are living a luxurious lifetyle, thay are trying to survive. I always haggle but not to extremes, just a compromise that I believe is fair for both of us.
He doesn't look great at haggling... I bet locals get way better deals than he did. Not that he did anything wrong, they (rightfully) know that he has money, and probably double the prices.
well thats still more than what you get at walmart for a dollar and you must considere many people have other ways of getting food like hunting fishin and farming for themselves instead of buying it
That's what's great about living in a developed and industrial country. You can take a little of your own country's money and be hella rich in another.
Such a rip off
