I think Madara beat the 1st Hokage because "How in the hell did he get the 9 tails?" I know for a fact that the 1st had sealed tails(The Necklace) during the time. I bet when it came down to it, that's probably what started that war, because they thought the leaf village was holding back on giving the strongest tail. Correct me if I am wrong please. if you read the manga you'll find out that the 1st lord defeated madara and left him for dead. about 16 years later he (madara) brings 9 tails back which is defeated by the 4th's reaper death seal. so as of now madara, in itachi's own words is " a twice beaten dog" or something like :)
