The character who appears at that point is the Vala, Ulmo. But it's really too complicated to give the history of Gondolin here as you need to put it into the context of the first age. I would recommend you read the Silmarillion itself, or use one of the online Tolkien encyclopaedia's such as Encyclopaedia of Arda.

I would love to see them make a movie about the story of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin. After reading the story of the Fall of Gondolin I thought it would be great to watch the Hammer of Wraith to fight til the last elf. And each one killed at least 7 orcs for everyone of them that died also they killed more Balrogs than all the Five great Battles of Beleraid combine. So epic

@Feasereg Would love that too, though there's one hitch.. it's likely that they'd have to redo the look of the balrog from PJ's films. The way it's depicted in PJ's films, there's no way any Elf could stand up to it I think. Only a Maia like Gandalf could rival it's power

@Asgardt Balrogs however, are fallen Maia, and shapeshifters by nature. I expect many of the Balrogs serving Morgoth took very different forms during the Fall of Gondolin. (BTW I am not supporting Peter Jackson's films, I think they ruined the public opinion of what The Lord of the Rings really is)

drakespyro you are totally wrong it wasnt hurin's fault at all.Although he betrayed gondolin's location to morgoth there was no way for morgoth to find a passage into the city and the whole area was guarded by the eagles.thus the blame is on maeglin who betrayed gondolin.Tourgon is also responsible for he had been warned long ago to abandon the city and escape instead of fighting.However the fall of gondolin though filled of sorrow was one of the most epic deeds of the elves ever..aure entuluva!

And I just love the point in the Silmarillion (I'm not sure exactly what the war was called) where all the Elves of Beleriand marched up on Melkor's fortress in the Anfauglith.. and unexpectedly Turgon of Gondolin 'opened its leaguer' and came to assist his kin :D I had chills on my arms.

I think this is beautiful, but in a way, it is rather similar to the movie soundtrack. Does no one have another vision of Tolkeins world? Peter Jackson and his cronies seem to be leading the way as to what Tolkeins world sounded and lookd like. They are not the creators of Middle Earth, Tolkein is. Long Live the soul of J.R.R Tolkein!

i think its part of the story of Eól, the dark Elf, and his coming to the city of Gondolin to reclaim his son. The next picture 1:56 is that of Eór being thrown from the walls of that great city, and Maeglin, his son is in the foreground watching.
